one of the swimmers had to pay $10,000!

A lawyer for another swimmer, James Feigen, said early Friday that the athlete had reached an agreement with a judge in which he planned to donate 35,000 Brazilian reals ($10,800) to an "institution" and leave the country later in the day.

Attorney Breno Melaragno said under the agreement, Feigen will make the donation, get his passport back and depart.

So, I guess I'll go on record as believing Lochtes.......

Because well, he had a gun pointed at him, he was taken out of a cab, and money was taken from him.

I thought having to bribe cops was a well known fact in most shithole countries. Next time don't be a jackass and keep yourself in Olympic village.

So, I think this Ryan Lochte thing is being blown out of proportion. I just watched the videos.

The media is saying they "trashed" a gas station. You see them entering the area looking for a bathroom. They are in there for no more than 30-40 seconds, and then they all come out and get into a cab. How do you trash a bathroom in 30 seconds? Then you do see security people come up and get them out of the cab. Later, there is another video of them handing their wallets.

Now, were they robbed? Not exactly but I don't know if I would call Lochtes initial story that outlandish. Remember, they were intoxicated after being at a party and do not speak Portuguese. Certainly there was confusion. It appears they were looking for a bathroom, most likely got up to it, couldn't get it, tried to kick the door to get in and damaged the door somehow. Then, security guards with guns intimidated them and demanding them give them the money they had. Certainly reasonable account of a drunken person, especially one who doesn't speak the language seeing guys with guns demanding money.

Doesn't make it right. I'd like to know how much the security guards with guns fleeced off of them. If it was $500 for kicking a door, smashing a mirror? Fine. If they had 10k on them....that is virtually getting robbed.

When someone rear en ds you, do you tell them they can't leave, intimidate them with a gun and demand x amount of money?

When it comes down to it, do I trust a random Brazilian or this guy?

Hell no. Brazil is a shit show. Their head of security got mugged. Australian swimmer was forced to withdraw $$ from an ATM in the middle of the night at gunpoint. Pools turned green. I'll take our guys' side on this one.

No one is walking around with 10k. They reportedly gave them roughly 50 bucks.

Not in the us, in Rio probably **** yes. Probably the only way you'll ever get anything out of it

Well there was four of them. 2.5k each. Not unheard of. Besides, it was just an example. If it was 50 bucks, that was a heck of a deal then. Still, being intimidated by someone with a gun while being intoxicated is certainly something that can be misconstrued.
