These days, it's tough to find one that's actually boozy, even if it is 18%... granted, I've been sipping bourbon for a few years now, so that could have something to do with it. Make the trip to BFE, Iowa and visit Toppling Goliath and Pulpit Rock if you haven't... their stouts are out of this world (and basically everything TG does is great). |
Quote:
Great made high ABV stouts can mask that and taste great. |
Just collected a few IPAs from New York based Fidens and Root + Branch breweries. Very expensive because of the transatlantic travel costs and excise duty.

I've had some of Toppling Goliath's stuff, their recent Hazy IPA collab with Boulevard was so good! I'll keep my eyes peeled for their stouts, as we get a lot of stuff in Green Bay from TG. |
Also, I highly, highly recommend any pastry stouts from Untitled Art.
Perfection. |
Quote:
I've heard of Fidens, apparently pretty good... it's in Albany though, which seems like the most boring city in New England, so didn't make it there when I was up that way last year. |

Currently sipping a Drekker PB&J sour... they nailed it, has a great PB&J smell to it and nailed the flavor. https://i.imgur.com/39lrHmK.jpeg |

Second batch of this brew with Citra, Mosaic, and Idaho 7 hops. Comes in just under 8%. ****ing delicious. I call it Big Juicy Bitch. |
That's a great looking beer!
Damn, we're going to need to do a CP Beer Thread Collab. <a href="https://imgflip.com/i/8u29c2"><img src="https://i.imgflip.com/8u29c2.jpg" title="made at imgflip.com"/></a> |

A buddy of mine sells for them up here in GB and hasn't offered me any cans yet. The asshole. |

I hit some great breweries last year, including a couple of longtime bucket list places like Prairie in OKC and Southern Tier in upstate NY... and I'd love to hit up Drekker at some point, except the fact they're in freakin' Fargo. :( |
Quote:
I have a lot of breweries on my bucket list, outside of Drekker. We really wanna visit Portland, Maine and hit up Definitive, and Allagash atop of that list. We are going to Ursa Minor next month and I've heard nothing but great things. |
Quote:
Portland is awesome... Barreled Souls is in nearby Saco and they have world class stouts and barleywines. Bissell Brothers, Allagash, and so on. Jot down High Roller Lobster Company, that place is incredible (it's hard to go wrong with food though). Speaking of Fargo, Duluth is way the hell up there, too. LMAO Wouldn't mind hitting up Surly in Minneapolis one day, too. |
I'm headed to Indianapolis for a few days next week - plan on revisiting 450 North for their ridiculous slushy sours. Any other recommendos? I didn't get to go to Guggman Haus last time, so that is on the list.
|
North Park is dangerously close and oh so delicious... I've never been one to seek out the absolute freshest IPAs, but the guy at the counter today mentioned "well, that one is like 2 weeks old...", so they take it seriously. LMAO
Grabbed a 4 pack, canned 4 days ago. https://i.imgur.com/314Kizu.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/3qXaiLg.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/kHW3tOE.jpeg |
I've had some decent beer this week.
Untitled Art's German Chocolate Pastry Stout - pretty smooth, and not overly boozy for 17%. Drekker's new Fluff Stuff Raspberry - solid, but I prefer the mango and strawberry. I also tried their Shark Punch Braaaaaaaains. Good stuff. Headed to Cocoon Brewery tomorrow - probably my favorite brewery in Green Bay. Honestly, most of the breweries in Green Bay are ass, outside of Cocoon. |
Quote:
Might have to add that one to my far north Drekker/Surly/Ursa adventure one day. |

Had two of these last week at Oskars Slider Bar in Louisville.
Einstok Toasted Porter Low ABV made them easy to drink on a very humid, hot day with the food. Nice tasty smoky flavor. |

If you do have the extra time - check out Voyageur Brewing up in Grand Marais, some really solid beer, a great atmosphere and a pretty sweet view. |

It's pretty cool seeing some of the beers I work with daily being consumed by fellow Chiefs Planeteers. |

And damn, look at Reaper with New Glarus back in freakin' 2010, don't think you can get it outside of Wisconsin now. |

I stopped by Tree House Tewksbury a couple times and that property is freakin' amazing... I'd get there right at opening because so many reviews talked about how crazy it was, but never saw it out of control and at most it took a couple minutes to get beer. It used to be a golf club house and they have a great outdoor space. IPAs were great of course, and they had some really good stouts as well (of course I'm the only person in the world who goes to Tree House and orders the stouts). Trillium in downtown Boston was a favorite, too. |

Man, I'm just hearing about The Great Taste of the Midwest - located in Madison, Wisconsin every year.
There are approximately 1400 beers to try for only $70. I'm definitely hitting it up next year. You guys should check out the breweries on the list. Insane. |
Quote:
Whats cool about The Taste is breweries are required to represent to attend. Lot of breweries just send kegs to festivals and its local volunteers pouring them, but with The Taste you get to interact and network with the actual brewers, not just at the event, but the day or 2 leading up to with special tapping events happening all over Madison. Its an actual brewers festival Pro tip: its a lottery system for tickets (at least it was in '21 but that was coming out of Covid) unless you live in Madison then I think they go on sale to locals at like HyVee or someplace comparible. So even if you think there's a chance, I'd book a refundable room now and cancel if you can't make it. Also the whole thing is totally walkable from the capital area and they offer free rides back. Also join the Facebook group and you can usually find tickets at cost if you don't land the lottery In '21 to get tickets you had to physically mail them a check and if it got cashed you knew you won the lottery and they mailed you the tickets. Its Midwest AF LMAO Its a world class run festival though. I hope to return one day Oh and you get the taster glass https://i.imgur.com/YdZVXs3.jpg |

Bring snacks and water. I think I took a Coleman backpack cooler and some foldout chairs for the wife and I I know Surly does an event in the days leading up. Toppling Goliath brings the heat. Drekker brings the goods. Download the app and see where breweries are if you want to make a plan. Lot of people go crazy over the hype beers but there's plenty of great shit pouring all day. Thought I read where Goose isn't going this year so maybe no BCBS but there's better stuff there anyway Not sure what its like there now but we got perfect weather in '21 which added to the joy Madison is awesome |

One of my first ever neg reps way back in the day was an argument about rap music vs old school rock LMAO. Looking back I can't say he was totally wrong but I still stand by my original concept of thought. :D |
Floyds with like 5 Dark Lords stouts is about all I need to know about that beer fest.... noticed Founders is bringing back CBS (that never seemed to go away), that's cool.
Mikerphone looks fun as does Revolution. Toppling Goliath seems a bit lacking compared to others, but Caramel Apple Fandango is great along with Mornin' Delight... figured they'd have a Term Oil, I guess. I'm game... Drekker, Surly, that one in Duluth and that other one in Canada or some shit, beer fest, hit up Mikerphone and Toppling Goliath/Pulpit Rock. Gain 30 pounds. It'll be awesome. |

Half Acre Triple Barrel Catch Hell is the best beer on that list
Don’t sleep on Forager. Nilerzzzzz was one of my favorite beers at The Taste EDIT: Maplewood Cuppa Neat:Stg Jr would be a must. Cuppa Neats are their non-adjuncts. First was Pappy barrels and one of Chicago’s best Rev’s Cherry VSOJ is brewers kiss |
Having some beers and whisky nips tonight for the Chiefs game. Starting with some 10 year Ben Nevis in oloroso and a BKS KC Wide Open IPA, brewed by a local disc golfer Dick Parker for our local pro tour disc golf event, the KC Wide Open. If I knew how to use any of the technology at my hands, I'd post a picture but don't wait up for me.
Little bit green but minimal hop burn, it's a huge Citra bomb. No wonder since I think it's Citra, Citra Cryo and some more Citra in some form or fashion. Very tasty, soft mouthfeel. Water profile is right on point for the style. |

I could use some friends on there. |

I got to the point where the beers would come out and I'd pull my phone out and open the app. Then once I had my phone out it was like let me check my email, CP or whatever instead of just enjoying the beer. So I shut it down for my own sake The scoring is also a little comical. Ewwww a lager 2/5 but a shitty IPA 3.9/5 I do like to see what beers are being posted so I know whats out and where so it does have its usefulness |
Seeing the Octoberfest brews hitting stores. Always a good thing

North Park Hazies coming in at 4.38. |
Quote:
I think the average score is in the upper 3's which defies math on a 5 point scale People want beer to be better than it really is especially if you'd sought it out and paid for it. Then the whole style bias, rating while inebriated, not wanting to self admit you're drinking a shit beer, etc. |
It's cool.
I'll just go **** myself. :D |
I guess I use Untapped more as a beer journal - that way I don't drink a beer I've already had before, unless I love it.
It can get tricky for me when it comes to Drekker and Untitled Arts. |
Quote:
And the raw ratings on beer advocate can be very similar to Untappd, making it just as frustrating if a beer doesn't have enough ratings to hit their 100 point scale... but, even then I'll trust a detailed 4.17 review on there over a bunch of pics and 4.00 ratings on Untappd. |

I participated quite a bit on BA, especially the Great Lakes forum, and those dudes in general seem to be more old school. So they're probably underscoring hype beers vs Untappd hyping beers I do like to look at pics on Untappd though as a gauge Its similar to Yelp for me. I don't care what you thought of the decor and maybe service was off that night but I can tell I'm going to enjoy that chimichanga by the pic |
Untappd can also be good for seeing when a beer was released if a brewery doesn't date their cans. Just scroll back and see when it started getting posted on Untappd
|

Quote:
I think Untappd does a better job of adding the year it was released or batch 1, 2, 3, etc Quote:
|
Quote:
I'm sure both platforms have their share of shouting at clouds of how current releases aren't like it used to be in the old days when you had to walk up hill both ways in the snow to get your one bottle limit of BCS per store. |
Quote:
I think there was a decade between CBS releases. So ingredient variances (droughts, contracts), brewhouse upgrades, process upgrades, scaling up the recipe, distro conditions, packaging format changes...all things that can create variance among releases |

I might have to head down to Sheboygan, Wisconsin this weekend.
Their Wolf variants are dropping this weekend - great stouts. This weekend's release: Wolf Bitter Barrel Aged Wolf with Anodyne Coffee Wolf with Blue Bottle Coffee Wolf with Dark Matter Coffee Wolf with Roseline Coffee Wolf with Raspberry & Coffee Highly recommend them and their beer if you guys are ever in lake side Wisconsin. |

Admittedly showing off a bit here but when people question why I'm Team Oahu over Team Maui, a visit to Inu Island Ale is a legit consideration that goes into the planning Hanna Banana https://i.imgur.com/O5fOD4Q.jpg Citra Citra Citra (Airbnb plasticware) https://i.imgur.com/EZWCyMR.jpg Hana Koa/Inu Island Ale collab: The Californians https://untappd.com/b/hana-koa-brewi...rnians/5938119 (Chicago Half Acre Big North coozie) https://i.imgur.com/HHTfHGf.jpg <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Tt-tG6ufH90?si=uEwkyn1-qWrDIKGT" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
It's hot and muggy as hell in KC right now which makes that Citra Citra Citra looks pretty damned refreshing and delicious.

Gotta buddy who sells for Mega (including Drekker).
And one of my favorite spots in town got in some of their barrel stouts - which I guess isn't common for them to distribute. I guess most states got only two cases. How do I not go buy these? 'Til the Night Closes in - Imperial stout aged in whiskey barrels for 26 months, then conditioned on milk sugar and a mountain of toasted coconut. Dead is Not Dead - stout with cacao nibs and milk sugar, loaded with Madagascar & Mexican vanilla beans. A ton of vanilla. |

Enjoyed a 2019 Fremont BBA Dark Star: Coffee Edition on tap north of Seattle... they also apparently do some vertical tastings and had about 40 beers on tap. Great, smooth coffee flavor.

For those here - the beer you guys keep on hand - like what do you typically drink?
Me, personally, most of the beer I keep here at home is just a mixture of 6 beers. Just because generally I just like trying new beer. I do like Narragansatt, which might be my most favorite beer flavored beer, but for the most part I don't keep 12+ packs of the same stuff at home. What do you guys generally keep on hand? |
Here in AZ you can buy singles so I'll usually piece together a couple 4pks of whatever gets released locally or distributed that week. So like 8 different beers that I'll drink over time
Typically a solid combo of west/hazy IPAs that land in a particular week |

Will be in KC in a few weeks. Basic Google and untapped research tells me that the best breweries in KC are Alma Mader and BKS Artisanal Ales. But disappointingly it seems that both of these taprooms close at 8pm. So my question is...where in KC can I get beers from these breweries on tap that is open until at least 10pm? Also what's the best non brewery affiliated craft beer bar/taproom in KC?
