SNR in here judging people.
Hell hath frozen over. |
You know we got it good as a fan base when you have people talking fondly about a guy that averaged 3500 yards and 20 TDs a year while here.
|
Bunch of Dayton Moores in this thread.
I'll bet Alex refrained from masturbating and looking at porn. Now THAT'S what I call a memorable and successful career! |
Quote:
the next week he'd have a nocturnal emission and lose all that chi power and go 14 for 23 for 100 yards and 0 TD, 1 INT |

That trade helped stabilize the organization in desperate times. In full hindsight, it has to be viewed as a win for the franchise. 2013: Geno Smith (disaster) Manuel (disaster) Nassib (disaster) Glennon (disaster) Landry Jones (disaster) 2014: Bortles (out of reach) Manziel (disaster) Carr (just good enough to not need replaced; Alex Smith lite) Garoppolo (just good enough to not need replaced; Alex Smith lite) 2015: Winston (out of reach) Mariota (out of reach) Brett Hundley (disaster) Seimian (disaster) 2016: Goff (out of reach) Wentz (out of reach) Paxton Lynch (disaster) Hackenburg (disaster) Brisset (disaster) Dak Prescott (would have been a good pick, but you can kiss Mahomes goodbye) All of these options are either terrible, not accessible realistically, or would result in us no longer drafting Mahomes. The only other realistic option was Carson Palmer and if you go back in time and we pick him up instead, everything else changes up to this point. Palmer was probably not winning us a Super Bowl from 2013-2017 so nothing changes anyway. We do a lot of spinning our wheels until 2017 when we take Patrick regardless. |

Alex's play style, like Lamar Jackson in a way, is really good for winning regular season games. We all know it is not the winning formula in the postseason, but we don't average 10-11 wins per season with most of those guys at QB. |
Alex Smiff: You can never be too careful.
Patrick Mahomes: Ahh **** it, Kelce down there somewhere. |
Not saying they ALL would have been Alex or better, but you also can't ignore there are reasons why teams like the Jets, Browns, Jaguars, etc; are disasters at QB despite picking high in the draft.... and not average, but disasters.
And the Chiefs hired the right HC... so to a large extent you have to say you trust Reid's assessment and to choose a stop gap and not draft a QB that season. OTOH, I think it's wrong to assume each of those QBs has exactly the same experience under Reid and an organization that was trying to quickly get back to mediocrity and didn'thave a dumpster fire of a roster, as opposed to the organizations that seemingly wallow in the dumpster fire. It's probably also wrong to assume once they signed him to 4 years or whatever it was, they were going to immediately draft a guy the next year anyway.... they probably handcuffed themselves to a large extent by their own loyalty to Smith (in other words, you could say they committed themselves to 4 years of mediocrity with that signing, as opposed to finding a 1 year stop gap and maybe being bad for another year). |

Can anyone here with a straight face claim that we win a Super Bowl from 2013-2017 with any of these QBs? No, you absolutely cannot. In fact, knowing what we know now, we are most likely in worse position today if we take a chance on any one of these guys. Y'all wanna go back in time and take Carr or Garoppolo? Lol. They're probably both still in KC to this day. Dak Prescott? We for damn sure don't draft Mahomes in the next draft. Any of those other names probably extend the Save Our Chiefs days by another couple calendar years. Carson Palmer was the only other viable option so there is no point in complaining about Alex Smith. He wasn't Mr. Right, but he ****ed us until he showed up. |

There are a number of QBs that showed success under Reid in Philly that all turned out to be dogshit on other teams. There was even a time where Alex Smith was complete dogshit on another team before the Chiefs where he was upgraded to middling... weird. |
Quote:
This list is full of turds, dude. Alex Smith had more combined experience and talent than anyone on this list. If Reid couldn't make him elite, he damn sure couldn't make Derek Carr elite. |

carr is better now than alex ever was

Quote:
Smith had clearly turned a corner in his last couple years in San Fran. He was no longer dogshit by 2011. |
Quote:
You can call him a dud, maybe. A turd, though? No. I won't have it! Quote:
You know he'd still be here right now if we had drafted him back in 2014. Your proposal is to draft Carr in 2014 and hope that pussy leads us to the Super Bowl. |
Nick Foles could have won us a supebowl.

I trust Andy to make that call. |

8th ranked defense, 8th ranked rushing, 30th ranked passing. It's a wonder Smith could even stand up straight. His back was pretty ****ed up from carrying that team. |
Quote:
alex's best season is basically carr's floor now and he doesnt have a tyreek |
Quote:
That's not dogshit, bro. His YPA that season was 7.1. Mahomes and Brady's last year was 7.4. Dogshit was Rex Grossman that same year. He attempted 458 passes for 3100 yards, 16 TDs and 20 INTs. Tarvaris Jackson. Josh Freeman. |
Why the **** are we debating Alex Smith? This is giving me flashbacks..
|
His mediocre stats weren't even his worst sin. Watching Alex Smith play brought me almost no joy. The Cassel - Smith stretch of Chiefs was some of the most uninspired offensive play imaginable.

In the timeline where we drafted Derek Carr: We languish even longer in the Save Our Chiefs days for the 2013 season, probably go like 7-9 with some schlub off the scrapheap at QB. We draft Carr in 2014. We don't win a Super Bowl from 2014-2017. We probably don't draft Mahomes in 2017 because Carr is juuuust good enough to not need replacing and still young enough for the front office to not want to trade up for another QB. |

Smith helped them get to the NFCCG in 2011. He would have beat the Giants and helped them advance to the Super Bowl if not for two fumbles from Kyle Williams on the punt return team. Quote:

Clay, did you know Alex Smith had the highest rating in 2017?

When as a fan base you're still debating a guy half a decade and 2 superbowl appearances later, on whether or not he was a good qb, then you know he was a good QB that as apparent as our recent success, wasn't good enough to CONTINOUSLY get you to the big game.... Could we have done it? Probably we were stacked when Smith was let go.
Trying to argue that he wasn't good, or that he was better than good is just dumb... |
Can we get more terrible Alex Smith GIFs?

Man you guys are something else. Smith came here, helped turn Chiefs franchise around despite his many limitations, then Chiefs ended up finally drafting a 1st round QB by the name of Patrick Mahomes, a QB which Alex Smith helped mentor. Mahomes took over in amazing fashion which led to Chiefs winning a SB for first time since 1969. I don't think the situation could have worked out much better.
Yet you guys still want to bitch. Bunch of crybabies... Alex Smith was an average QB with certain strengths and weaknesses but he came here and did best he could. It worked out long term which is what Reid was looking at, the big picture, not the small one. There's no reason to be a weirdo like the nerd Clay and hate the guy. |
I didn't care for his dink and dunk too scared to throw it down field play; but he is one of only 5 Chiefs QBs to ever win a playoff game. I rank him right behind Steve DeBerg.
|
Quote:
He had all of the physical tools and experience required to be an elite QB, which always made him more frustrating to watch. No one gave a shit when Brodie Croyle or Damon Huard sucked because they just didn't have it. The only thing holding Alex back was himself. If he wasn't such a pussy and just let it fly from time to time, he'd be remembered more fondly here. |

Funny though, I was talking to a guy from Missouri yesterday, started out talking about Joe Montana. I mentioned I had rooted for the Chiefs in the playoffs when Joe was QB there, and that I tried to catch all the Chiefs games when Alex was there. He said he liked Alex Smith. I was a bit surprised. He was always a huge sources of controversy among Niners fans. |
