I just don't understand the excercise. Why would one even wonder about such a thing? Carl's screwed up a great many things, but he didn't screw this up, so why bring it up?

Waiting to see who calls and what they offer is WAY different than "trying to trade down".

The latter implies he was calling people, begging them to take Johnson off his hands.

I have every reason to believe that the FORMER is true, he would have been a fool not to wait and see. DJ was a concensus Top 10 pick. What if someone called and said, "We'll give you this year's 1st, next year's 1st, and this year's 2nd".

The other dynamic, which the team has even admitted to, was someone wanting to trade up to get someone else. They decided early to take Derrick Johnson, but were hoping to draft him at 16th or later and get picks back, since they had traded for Surtain.

then why make an arguement out of a situation that didn't require one?

Peterson said the day of the draft that they fielded calls from other teams looking to trade up, but as soon as they realized one of those teams wanted DJ, they stopped taking calls.

I gotta a good feeling that we were going to draft DJ no matter what, they were just trying to work for extra picks.
