Just FTR, I always wear my seatbelt in the car and wear a bike helmet on my bike. ;)

Yes. There are also other laws in some places that are stupid. Like spitting on the sidewalk is a crime.

I think Skip is an idiot just like a lot of you guys. After all, this is the same guy that would not go see the doctor after he had what sounded like a stroke or something. But I don't believe in gov't micromanaging like this.

That's fine if you feel that way, as long as you're willing to pay for your medical bills out of your own pocket.

I think we should impliment mandatory helmut and knee pad laws as well. You can't be too careful.

But they could have it on the sign up forms that if you get a traffic violation or are in a traffic accident with no seatbelt, you will pay a penalty on your insurance.

It's funny you bring up smokers, because as a smoker I've endured huge hikes in cigarette taxes because of the tobacco lawsuit and subsequent settlement a few years back. Supposedly, these additional taxes are to help pay for smoking related illnesses. Fair enough, I know it's risky behavior and I haven't complained about the additional cost. There's no reason those who don't smoke should have to pay for any smoking related illnesses I may come down with. It shouldn't be any different for those who choose not to wear their seatbelts.

Wouldn't want anyone to get even the most minor boo-boo, especially if they're not on their own property.

You just can't be too careful with your epidermis these days, and by gawd if it gets abraded, someone is going to need to pay for the damage!

What about the innocent victims who are struck by unrestrained bodies being flung from moving automobiles? Who's going to take care of the victims?

Usually when people start making wild exaggerations I assume they've conceded their side of the argument. It's called Bugeater's Law.
