They were talking earlier that if he lost consciousness due to a spin the chute would automatically deploy...

Just about everyone that jumps has a computer setup that will open the chute at a preset alt.

I believe they said it was set to go off if the G force from the spin reached a certain level. Otherwise he would have kept free spinning, while blacked out, until the altitude set the chute off.
