Let me tell you a story:
So I get off work late today (again) and I find that I have a small bit of paperwork to do. I think '**** it' to myself and just go home with it. I know that my dog has been home alone half the day and needs to be let out. I go home and sit down, do the paperwork while the dog does his business. As I'm sitting there I realize that I'm hungry and remember that I haven't been to Taco Bell in a while. The thought of my dog shitting is probably what reminded me of Taco Bell, but I digress.
So when both of us are ready I gather my things. And I go. The Taco Bell is located at the other end of the dinky little town that I live just outside of. Most of the roads are unusually wide and the main street is four lanes. Just as I approach the Taco Bell I notice that the cars in front of me are moving with irregular speed and the drivers are beeping their horns. All four lanes worth of traffic are going and stopping, beeping their horns, it's bedlam.
As I get to the area I see that a frantic chicken is causing the chaos. It's bobbing and weaving through all four lanes of traffic. The thing almost makes it to one side of the road and swerves back to the middle. Over and over again. So, finally, I stop my car completely. I put on my hazard lights. I get out of the car and I start chasing this chicken towards safety.
This goes on for a while and I work the chicken to one side. I get the chicken to safety and then I have to walk the 25 feet or so back to my car. As I walk back I notice that no one's angry. All of the faces that I see through windshields are happy, relieved faces. A guy in a pick up rolls his window and calls out to me, laughing, "I bet you didn't plan on chasing a chicken today!" I respond with a laugh and a, "Nope!"
So I got to the Taco Bell. I end up ordering a Crispy Chicken Quesadilla $5 Box and a side order of their version of chicken nuggets. I drive back home and ponder that. I have no problem eating pieces of a chicken. I do it all the time. But I can't bring myself to just randomly kill a chicken when it's not necessary. Even to the point of substantial inconvenience. And the dozens of other drivers looked like they felt the same way. Kind of a weird afternoon.
