I'm not Ari, but I grew up in NKC in the 80's and I only knew 1 MU fan growing up, and that was a HS science teacher that everyone felt sorry for because he was an MU fan.

didn't have the longevity. only played in four full seasons, 68 games total. that's the equivalent of four current nfl seasons, with four games thrown in. by comparison, priest holmes played in 113 games, terrell davis 78 games. both are more HOF worthy than gale sayers. neither will ever make the HOF.

Sayers didn't have a true HOF career, that being said MU produced one of my favorite running backs of all time, James Wilder. He was used and abused by some awful Tampa Bay teams.

I watched the Duke game. The outcome of it shouldn't have been surprising in the least for anybody that watched them play this year. Duke was much worse than Missouri (even with Kelly, who didn't even play the game) and Lehigh was way better than Norfolk.

I grew up in Missouri, was born in Kansas, neither parent had any collegiate interests, cousin Lynn Dickey played for KSU, another cousin played for KU football, a scrub, I always liked hoops and KU invented hoops... Plus I've always hated slavery... became a fan at age 12/13... And then I went to school at KU. Boom. Another Final Four. I've cheered for 8 of the 14 in my life. I'm a bandwagon fan/alumni of over 25 years. I suck.

The problem with that, of course, was that Norfolk really isn't a good basketball team. In fact, they're a terrible one.

You are aware KU did not invent shit. Naismith came up with the thoght of basketball in 1891. Sent the idea off to some other guy who made it better as Naismith wanted the guys rolling the ball to each other then tried to claim it was all his. That loser did not even get to KU until 1898. KU invented basketball = fail.

It's a tough question, but sometime quality is so overwhelming, it obviates the need for quantity. Jim Brown's career wasn't as long as it could've been, but both he and Sayers were so superior to their competition when healthy and playing that you have to recognize.

If Mizzou fans had it their way, Gayle Sayers would be picking cotton on a plantation somewhere.

no doubt, gale sayers was talented. but let me put it this way--where do you draw the line? to go to extremes, matt cassel once had two 400 yard passing games in a row. it's never been done before. if he'd have retired after that, does that make him a hall-of-famer?

gale sayers' career numbers are no better than priest holmes or terrell davis, both of which were amazing and among the best in the nfl before they retired due to injury concerns. there's a matter of consistency here: if a guy is a hall-of-famer in 1970, he's a hall-of-famer in 2012 (ignoring changes in style of play--1000 yards was more impressive in a 14 game season than now, league rules change to make offense easier, etc.). vis a vis, if gale sayers is a hall-of-famer, so are terrell davis and priest holmes. since they aren't, by proxy, gale sayers is a hall-of-famer in name only.

You can ask Bearcat if you want. We discussed the rather large possibility of Lehigh beating Duke on the day of the draw here. I also repeatedly called the MU/Norfolk game "a walkover" and a "virtual bye" due to how awful Norfolk St. had been this season.

Both were indicative of the crapshoot nature of the tournament, but there's little question which upset was more surprising.

Yeah, I know the history.... sounds better when revised to state that we invented basketball.
