Consider Wayne and Rowland's conversation in the car after meeting with the priest, the Priest and the lady making the straw dolls appear in a negative light, the one-eyed black suspect identifying as a Presbyterian. Hoyt's foundation feels like it's a Baptist kind of thing.

Will's body is found in a praying pose in ep. 1. By ep. 3 Hayes and West make the connection with the pose by looking at the photo album that Tom Purcell produces that the police didn't see on their early search and they see Will's First Communion photo and we see in ep. 4 he was the only one photographed with his eyes shut.

Amelia brings up Will's disposition in the cave in asking Wayne if it could have been a accident where he initially makes it seem like he doesn't want to talk about the subject before the awkwardness of talking about their relationship pushes him to talk about the toys found at the crime scene and confirms (if his demeanor didn't already do so in ep. 1 or 2) he was the one to find her.

Amelia says, "The way Will's body was ... How you're saying the toys," and intimates there was some sort of affection apparent in the gifts and how he was left.

If Roland and Wayne didn't explain (on screen) to the Purcell's about how they had found Will's body, does it make any sense for Wayne to mention that level of detail to Amelia?

Further, Amelia asks for his story about Wayne's family and dating life but she dodges his question about family. She'd done that in ep. 2 as well IIRC, but interestingly enough in that episode at the bar, Wayne mentions 'he likes to laugh,' and we hear this before the Purcell's receive the ransom note.

Pizzalotta is seemingly going out of his way to make Amelia look ****y or has sloppily given the characters knowledge that we as viewers have since we're watching the narrative unfold.

So is that saying Amelia has something to do with it? Or that its something with Wayne and Amelia? I don't know about that.

Amelia's enthusiasm with helping out to find Julie (actively asking for the photo of the doll from Wayne in 1980 corroborated with her flirting with the Salisaw, OK authorities to pump them for questions in 1990) can now be looked as suspicious since it seems like she has knowledge of Will's disposition when she shouldn't.

Wayne being involved with the murder/kidnapping would be a big ass-pull in terms of what we know so far.

The way Wayne has acted, I just don't see him being involved. Amelia maybe, but I don't think she actually killed him. Why would her having any knowledge of it be suspicions?

From how the other series' have gone, neither the detectives nor their secondary personal interests have been involved in any of the crimes that drive the plot of the season.. save for Frank Semyon's shady dealings in getting Velcoro comped and formulating the land deal that gets jacked by the Vinci / Russian interests anyway. Rust and Marty weren't committing the crimes we see are associated with the Carcosa cultists / Tuttle interests / Yellow King and neither were their (really Marty's) families victims nor perpetrators in season 1 and Bezzerides, Semyon, Velcoro and Woodrugh failed to stop Chessani Jr. and Burris from keeping the status quo in Vinci for the Catalyst Group and Ossip but their families were neither victims nor perpetrators (though Velcoro's son with Bezzerides being on the run with his momma along with Jordan and Nails is a consequence of the criminal conspiracy).

SO that leaves a problem in season three, where the first two seasons suggest that Amelia will ultimately have nothing to do with the kidnapping and murder of the Purcell kids but we're asking this question because of how she's acted so far AND because she indirectly mentioned the way Will's body was found. SO AGAIN, does she know this because Wayne told her in an off-screen scene or because she was involved with the crime?

If Wayne told her off screen then at best it's sloppy writing for writing the dialogue to suggest she knows stuff she probably shouldn't know as it's part of an active investigation and intentionally deceptive to the audience at worst to leave it ambiguous and begging the audience to question this very point.

I thought there was a scene where Wayne told her about how they found her. Maybe I made that up in my mind. In either event, I would imagine he's told her

Amelia said "you found Will," and then comments on his lack of sleep outside of the community center.

Does everyone know how Will's body was found (which wasn't made explicitly clear), do some people know how Will's body was found (the opposite is suggested since Wayne and Roland ask about the First Communion picture but the Purcell's don't comment on it being the same pose as Will's body) or does nobody but law enforcement know?

the most relatable "everyman" in True Detective. So far he's not mentally ill, not obviously addicted to any substance, not totally corrupt (beyond being okay with extrajudicially punishing a sex offender) and has a good relationship with the main protagonist in Wayne "Purple" Hayes.
