Based on some light Googling, it looks like the success rate for kickers is around 70-80%... even the elite shootout/penalty shot guys in the NHL are around 45-50%, with ~35% being good, and of course the NHL scraps it in the playoffs (and will hopefully never consider it). Soccer has some pretty strange rules.

i think it's regarding the health of the players... at that point the majority of them have been running nonstop for 120+ minutes...

hence the penalty kicks.

I get it. It's a shitty way to decide a championship though. Glad KC came out on top, but it just adds to the imagry that soccer is a chick's game. And that's coming from a fan.

I'd understand it if it were the regular season, but it deciding playoff games like that sucks.
