Rory Mickelson….

And I’m a Phil fan lol.

KC_Connection 06-16-2024 04:41 PM

Best major since Tiger won his last and it is entirely due to Bryson.

Phil had some brutal endings, but he never choked away a major by missing a 4 footer and a 2 foot 8 incher on the last 3 holes.

scho63 06-16-2024 04:43 PM

That was one hell of a US Open.

True but he’s had some epic choke jobs too…was my point.

That’s an all timer there, don’t get me wrong lol.

ping2000 06-16-2024 04:48 PM

That was a choke job by Rory, but I'll remember those last two shots by Bryson more. Holy balls, those were amazing!

philfree 06-16-2024 04:48 PM

Gifted the tournament. He did make the last putt for the win I guess. DeChambeau needs to learn when to be humble. He's a douche! I almost always route for the American but not in this case. Even with the Payne Stewart connection who I new a little and played with a time or two. Those two guys aren't remotely alike.

He made a great up and down no doubt. You shouldn't be able to win a US Open missing that many fairways. It bit him twice in the last day and a half but god he missed a lot of Fairways.

kcpasco 06-16-2024 05:06 PM

I feel a bit vindicated as someone who misses a fair amount of fairways off the tee block.

He made the shot he needed to make when it mattered and Rory didn't.

He just kinda acts like a social media cringe star on occasion. Because he does have a strong following in that space.

He wears his heart on his sleeve, just sometimes it's too much.

Rory didn't deserve to win. He choked it away. I could tell he was going to miss the putt on the last green. It was like he was afraid to do what he needed to make it. Like he circumvented his process and just stood up there half assed it mentally and fanned it. DeChambeau got the trophy and that's what counts in the end.

This is silly.

Guys win all the time without being #1 hitting fairways. You win by not choking or missing 2-3 foot putts on the last few holes.

Your hatred of BDC is now causing you to make a nonsense statement.

scho63 06-16-2024 05:20 PM

Golf is about a complete game.

Scorecards tell you no stories even though golfers want to retell you about every shot they hit even though you sat in the cart next to them for the whole round.

In most US Opens players get punished for missing fairways but yeah you can't miss putts at the end like Rory did. After that Rory is probably cooked for the rest of his career. Scott Hoch ring a bell?

I'm sorry you're mad.

scho63 06-16-2024 05:31 PM

When you don't hit fairways, it the roll of the dice.

Behind a tree, no swing, hardpan, deep rough, pine straw and leaves, roots.

There is where you can get lucky or get ****ed.

I used to hate playing back east in the fall because it was so easy to lose your ball under leaves even though you were sure you knew where it went.

BWillie 06-16-2024 05:38 PM

I'm afraid Rory has the choke gene like I do. When I was a junior golfer I lost countless tournaments by missing 2 to 4 foot putts on the final holes. The anxiety just builds up and I just fail. Hands start to shake. Palms sweaty. Putter stroke becomes jagged. Maybe next time he should have a couple beers after the turn.

I'm not mad I'm just stating my opinion. I'd like to see DeChambeau's fairways hit stat for the last 27 holes. I bet if you compare his stats to past winners he is an anomaly in that regard.

I grew up next to a shitty public course that had no watered fairways, no range, and no teaching pro. I started out jumping the fence with a set of Gene The Machine Litler's I the pulled out of the pump house. My dad who was a golfer jumped the fence with me one day and I think he was a little surprised I could hit it at 11/12 years old. Since I had no teaching pro I talked him into sending me to some golf camps. I really didn't learn much at those but I did get to pound balls which I still love to do. Anyway all those camps have a tournament the last day. The last year I went to a camp I was 15 and it was the best one. The USGA Jr Golf School at Boca Raton West. It was run by Gary Wiren who used to be the Editor of Golf Digest. So I'm playing in the tournament at the end and the kid from Horton Smith GC got it around pretty good that day. On the last hole which was a par 5 I had a short birdie putt to finish up my round. I had no idea it was for the win but I missed it. When I missed it I let go of my putter and put my hands on the sides of my head in disbelief. As my putter fell over it landed on my ball. I tapped in for what would have been a par and a tie for 1st. When I told the guy keeping my score I said that's a 6. It's golf so you have to call penalties on yourself, that's just the way it is. Gary Wiren was standing on the side of the green watching and as i walked off the green he asked what my put was for and what score did I make and I told him I made a six because my putter landed on my ball. He was impressed that I new the rule and that I called it on myself. So we have the last meeting that night and they give out trophies and various awards. I received the Sportsmanship Award because I called the penalty on myself. That's one trophy you never really want to win. Especially like that. Makes me want to puke thinking about it. I've always thought that had I made that putt for birdie my golf career would have been decidedly different. As it was it put me behind the 8 ball at an early age and I just never really overcame it confidence wise. I've won a decent match or two in my life and won a few tournaments here and there when I got older in what I'd call weak fields. I did make a straight down hill two footer for a win once so I didn't always choke but alas, what could have been.

That was great! Bryson may sleep in the bunker tonight.

Hoopsdoc 06-17-2024 03:01 AM

Was that an all time choke job by Rory or is it just me?

Don’t get me wrong, Brysons bunker shot was amazing, but if Rory makes 2 gimme putts he wins it outright.

I told my buddies when Rory took the lead that he’d choke it away.

O.city 06-17-2024 06:55 AM

The one on 16 was the real gimmie. The one on 18 was a tough putt.

The putt on 16 is just flat out inexcusable and everyone will talk about the putt on 18 but the real **** up was the chip...he should know better than to leave it above the hole there. Hell a 7-10 footer below the hole is a much easier putt there.

Chamblee called it out instantly and was right.

scho63 06-17-2024 10:32 AM

I think when Rory missed the putt on 16, the putt on 18 made his asshole pucker and he choked.

If you have played enough golf, you know that feeling the moment the doubt creeps in. You make nothing the rest of the day.

On the other side, when you start seeing every line and draining putts, the hole looks like a rain barrell.

I won a four-man scratch and scramble at my home NJ course where I drained putts from everywhere, including 30 and 40 footers. I think they used about 11-12 of my putts. I think I had runs of 4 in a row, 3 and 2 and 2.

I also won a 2 man championship at a public course in NJ where I learned to play. There is even a plaque on the wall from like 30 years ago.

KC_Connection 06-17-2024 04:12 PM

It wasn't easy, but that was a gutless putt he hit on 18. Hit it hard to the back of the cup and take the break out of it in that spot. It really doesn't matter if you go 3 feet by there at that point anyway.

scho63 06-17-2024 05:43 PM

We are looking at something like Vijay’s 2004 with a minor asterisk due to LIV players playing on another tour. It’s still gonna end up being one of the most dominant seasons ever.

He's very respected and generally well-liked amongst all players on Tour, so I think this is a good choice. He will have Tiger, Stricker and probably one other veteran Vice with him, so I'm not worried about him being so young. If he continues good form into next year, he may very well be a playing captain, as well.

I like it. Dude absolutely LOVES the Ryder Cup so you know he's gonna put in the time and effort. He's also young enough still to know how certain guys mesh behind the camera and out of the spotlight.
