I don't think the Niners 'really wanted' this trade.
We both hard parts we knew we weren't going to use. SF wasn't going to give anything of real value for Baldwin.
The only question I have is what Jenkins cap figure is. Is it possible the Chiefs could've been better off just releasing Baldwin outright and using the case space on Brandon Lloyd?
I figure the Chargers will price him out of our bracket, but there are still a couple of moves (like extending Berry) that could free up some space for a run at Lloyd. But it seems fairly apparent at this point that the Chiefs aren't interested.
The Chiefs weren't going to get anything for Baldwin. They weren't going to get SF to trade down from the 2nd to the 3rd. They were unlikely to be able to get a 6th for him. His value is essentially zero so they flipped him for another lottery ticket.
Again, changing mis-matched parts is generally a good idea. If it doesn't work out, you're not out anything. The opportunity cost on a Baldwin trade is almost certainly nothing more than a 6th/7th round pick.
