I could be wrong...but it would take a REAL asshole of a GM to force that on a HC...esp one who's a friend.

You've got this backwards. It takes a real pal to give a guy millions of dollars to be a head coach when he has no other chance of ever being a head coach again. Well, not really, if the guy doing the hiring has no other real choices.
