I fell in love with the avs around the late ninties. I grew up watching Roy, Blake *username*, sakic, forsberg, foote, deadmarsh, yelle, drury, tanguay etc.. i lost track of them and hockey in general since most of the guys retired and the team sucked..developed a little love for San jose since im a cali guy.. but it's so nice to see my avs doing good again!

Hey, I will fully admit to being one when it comes to hockey. It's not football...nothing is.

Semyon Varlamov, starting goaltender for the Colorado Avalanche, on Wednesday was arrested for domestic violence-related charges, the Denver Police Department said.

Police arrested Varlamov on second-degree kidnapping and third-degree assault charges, police said. The assault charge is a Class 4 felony charge; the kidnapping charge is a misdemeanor.

The police charges stem from an incident on Tuesday, police said.

Varlamov turned himself into police voluntarily earlier in the day, police said. He remains in Denver County jail, police said.

The Avs issued a statement about the arrest:

"The Colorado Avalanche organization is aware of the allegations concerning Semyon Varlamov. At this time, and until the conclusion of this investigation, the Avalanche organization will have no further comment on this situation."

Varlamov is 7-1 as a starting goalie this season for the Avs, his third season in Colorado. He is among the NHL leaders in goals-against average and save percentage this season.

The Avs are schedule to play next on Friday, at Dallas against the Stars.

Huh. That sucks. Hopefully it ends up being more minor than it sounds. Denver Post is saying second-degree kidnapping and third-degree assault charges.

Ryan Parker @ryanparkerdp
The class 4 felony kidnapping charge means someone was taken without their consent. That charge carries 2-6 years in prison #Varmalov

Avalanche Acquires Maxime Talbot
Center Helped Penguins Win 2009 Stanley Cup
Thursday, 10.31.2013 / 1:27 PM / News

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has acquired forward Maxime Talbot from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for forward Steve Downie.

Talbot, 29, has appeared in all 11 games for the Flyers this year, tallying a goal and one assist. A native of Lemoyne, Quebec, Talbot has recorded 77 goals and 77 assists for 154 points in 515 career games between Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. He has also skated in 77 career playoff games, totaling 39 points (18g/21a).

“Maxime is a veteran forward who has won a Stanley Cup and has a lot of NHL experience,” said Avalanche Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Joe Sakic. “We’re looking forward to him bringing that experience to our club.”

Talbot helped the Penguins win the 2009 Stanley Cup after tallying 13 points (8g/5a) in 24 postseason games that spring. He scored both goals in Pittsburgh’s 2-1 series-clinching victory over the Red Wings in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final at Detroit. Selected by Pittsburgh in the eighth round (234th overall) of the 2002 Entry Draft, Talbot spent his first six seasons with the Penguins before signing with Philadelphia as a free agent on July 1, 2011.

And apparently Varlamov kicked his girlfriend in the chest, dragged her by the hair (kidnapping? ), and told her if they were in Russia, the beating would have been worse.

In Soviet Russia, girlfriend beats you!

DaFace 10-31-2013 12:42 PM

Yeah, my guess is he ends up with some ugly legal wrangling, but that his career isn't impacted all that much in the end. Here's a chunk from a Puck Daddy article about it:

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nhl-pu...5079--nhl.html

Quote:

An interesting twist to this is that domestic violence is a deportable offense, under Section 237 of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Moreover, certain convictions for kidnapping are classified as “aggravated felonies” under Section 101(a)(43) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

Therefore, if Varlamov is convicted of either, he may potentially be placed into removal proceedings by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

My analysis, as a lawyer: I don't think he will be convicted or deported, because there would be a deal before it reaches that point. But I do think there's the potential for a civil lawsuit, and the arrest is a preamble to that suit.
