I know you are new-ish to golf, but if you want a good example of what a US Open course should look and play like, find some clips of the 2006 Open at Winged Foot or '07 at Oakmont. If you missed the fairways on those courses, you were getting punished. The greens were extremely firm, and they had undulations, but you didn't have to play shots that would land fifty feet past the pin and hope they caught a backstop to play them back towards the pin. Those courses could be played two ways: strong players could bomb away with a driver and use their strength to try and hack out of the deep rough, and precise players could play from the fairway and have reasonable shots to the middle of the green that would leave difficult, fast, but fair, birdie putts. This course has two problems: One, the greens are too undulating for the nature of the course, so too much luck is required to stop the ball on these surfaces. But the main issue is that the greens are just dogshit. If you're sitting over a four foot putt, some of them are almost unmakeable because of the poa, which can shoot the ball anywhere. Meanwhile, if someone doesn't have poa in their line, it's a pretty straight four foot putt. This course would be a lot better if the rough was much thicker and the greens were something like paspalum. |
well you clearly know more than me so I'm not going to sit here and argue ... that's for sure

Man, Hodge ****ing Park up by Liberty looks better than this shit heap they're playing on this weekend.

Anybody played Tiffany Greens this year? If so, how is the course looking/playing?
|
While you guys are trashing this setup, I love it. I've always wanted these whiny millionaires to come down to our level just a bit. They are so friggin' spoiled. We've never played on the manicured, perfect courses these guys get to play on.
In Missouri, we played on converted cow pastures where you lose your ball in the middle of the fairway. Once a year they can play on something they consider "subpar". |

If you want to see them brought down a level, take them to a course like Winged Foot that will beat the piss out of them, but in a fair manner. There are certain courses that just should not host tournaments like this. I'm sorry, but Chambers' greens are just not good enough. Similarly, you don't see the top 20 Remax competitors at the top of the OWGR. This is also why Olympic should never get a US Open--its fairways are a joke. |

Love seeing reed implode. Hate that guy for some reason.
|
Had to change it. It's just too hard watching people play on a purposely bad course.
|
It's the us open. I wanna see them beat up, but beat up fairly. I watched them play 2 majors at Southern Hills in tulsa. Tough track but fair

Oosthuizen was +9 at one point yesterday. Over his last 27 holes he's eight under, and he missed five putts inside of 10 feet.
He shot 66 today, could have easily shot 63, and no one else has finished better than 69. When he's right he's as good as anyone, and he got right damned quick. |

Day just shot 68 obviously still suffering from balance issues. He would be a worthy winner if he keeps it together tomorrow. Far better than a one who sucks the penis like Dustin Johnson.
|
What a round by Jason Day...it makes the Tigerscuses almost silly
|
I'd like to see Spieth finish it off

Golf isn't a fair game at all, but I firmly believe that guys should pay their dues first. |
Days definitely paid du3s, he should have won a master's a fee years ago iirc.

I feel a little bad for Spieth today, but he made so many bombs at Augusta I'm having a hard time mustering up too much sympathy.

So, Ben Martin started today at -3, two shots back. He is now two shots out of last after carding a smooth 86 which included three doubles, one triple, and a quad.
He played the par 5s in seven over today. |
Fantastic third round...have to say after Pinehurst last year really disappointing, good to see a close tournament. I think Speith has some putts to make tomorrow. After DJ getting screwed at Whistling Straits, there's plenty of good stories out there.
If Oostie has another 66 in him, could be very interesting. |
If Adam Scott could putt, he be the best player in the world
|
I want to see then crash and burn like I like to watch racing for the crashes.

Sorry to break up the US Open talk, but I thought I'd drop in here and say that for Father's Day I received a set of Adams hybrid irons, 4 iron to lob wedge. Pretty stoked about this! These clubs coupled with the Taylor Made SLDR Drier and Ping Scottsdale putter I won at a raffle a couple of weeks ago just means I need to actually learn how to play this game now.

And Chambers Bay looks like Augusta compared to last years Pinehurst ..... USGA and Mike Davis need to chill ... it's the US Open. The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) motto is "we keep golf green" .... guess the USGA feels different. |

Well, you can't blame the clubs, that's for sure... |
These greens seem like such an adventure. It's amazing.
|
Come on Day.
I really wanna see a playoff. US open playoff is legit. |
Dustin Johnson went from 2 up to 1 down just like that.
|
Poa greens are just the worst.

Dustin Johnson falling apart. I'm ok with that.

If Dustin Johnson and Jim Furyk were playing fourball in the Ryder Cup, they could find a way to lose when dormie 5.
|
Its just too late in the year to play this type of course in that region. 8 weeks ago, the course looked beautiful and would have been great to play.

You can have great bentgrass anywhere, especially that area. |
FOX is getting killed on Twitter because they're hardly showing Grace and he's tied for the lead.
|
Quote:
It's going to be hard as hell to grow bent greens there and not plow them under every five years because it doesn't get hot enough to burn the poa out. The shit grows everywhere. The climate will grow bent, but it will grow poa better, and a species with superior adaptations will always win. There's no reason to have the US Open on the Pacific coast because these are the greens they will always end up with. They would have to treat and treat and treat, and it's still always going to come back. |
Quote:
You're just always going to have problems playing a poa green course with a championship finishing late in the afternoon. |

I remember one of the great criticisms of the climax of Tin Cup was that a green would never do that.
The stupidity of these pin positions has disproven that. Mike Davis has set up this course like every green should have the Sunday pin on 7 or 16 at Augusta. |
If Winged Foot, Pinehurst, Oakmont, Southern Hills, Medinah, Baltusrol, shit insert how ever many normal US open courses you want, were in Britian, they'd be on a cycle just like the Open.
|
Mike Davis is a clown.
Come on Louie |
Someone posted their set so here it goes.
Got fitted for a new set of sticks this weekend at our club. Just cant decide on this http://media.titleist.com/images/tit...forged_714.png or http://media.titleist.com/images/tit.../CB/cb_714.png |
Picked up 2 new black Vokey's a few weeks back too. Pretty solid.

Oosthuizen's getting into the mix.

There are so many great courses that they've passed over for Torrey, Erin Hills, and Chambers. Somebody has to be getting their palms greased. Inverness deserves another Open. It's almost 7300 yards now and is an absolute classic. |

I get your point, all too often people expect too much perfection, but this is just terrible. But I work very VERY hard to keep my lawn as perfect as humanly possible, and I really appreciate well kept grass. |
Holy ****, Grace just squat ****ed himself with that drive.
|
Wasn't Louie in that horrible grouping of Tiger and Fowler to start the weekend? The man is hot. #nohomo

Shit, I always loved Valhalla too. I read that Winged foot and someone else turned them down for 2015. That correct? |
And Grace puts one into the fence. FOX executives high fiving in the luxury box. Probably looks like the Chiefs draft day GIF.

I've got the old CB's, love them, but I've been hitting it like a champ lately so the devil inside me wants to go blades mainly just for the "go **** yourself I'm a stick" everytime someone looks in my bag. Then of course, they'll see me hit them and wise up. |

Grace just rat****ed himself with that. Try to hit a draw under pressure, turns into a push cut slice. No bueno.
|
If someone goes into 18 with a one shot lead it's going to be Lucas Glover at Bethpage all over again--teeing off with a six iron. Also, Lucas Glover is one of the five worst major champions of the last 40 years.
|
Oosthuizen driving it into the bunker doesn't really matter, because you can't hold that green with a deep approach anyway.
And then Cameron Smith does that. Wow. |
Spieth drops the hammer.
|
Kill shot
|
I've never seen anyone who makes that many 20'+ putts. It's absolutely amazing. And it fell in the low side, too. That rarely happens.
|
Huge putt.
|
That lie will be interesting.
|
Whoa
|
Spieth's shot here is actually a problem w/ the course setup. When you contour the greens like this, you actually end up giving players that shortside themselves by hitting terrible shots outs they don't deserve.
|
When Oosthuizen catches fire, he catches fire. Leader in the clubhouse.
|
Damn
|
WOW
|
And Spieth gives it right back. Double. And now Oosthuizen's tied for the lead.
