I agree that the US Open should be brutal, but there are sensible ways to execute that brutality.

I know you are new-ish to golf, but if you want a good example of what a US Open course should look and play like, find some clips of the 2006 Open at Winged Foot or '07 at Oakmont.

If you missed the fairways on those courses, you were getting punished. The greens were extremely firm, and they had undulations, but you didn't have to play shots that would land fifty feet past the pin and hope they caught a backstop to play them back towards the pin. Those courses could be played two ways: strong players could bomb away with a driver and use their strength to try and hack out of the deep rough, and precise players could play from the fairway and have reasonable shots to the middle of the green that would leave difficult, fast, but fair, birdie putts.

This course has two problems: One, the greens are too undulating for the nature of the course, so too much luck is required to stop the ball on these surfaces. But the main issue is that the greens are just dogshit. If you're sitting over a four foot putt, some of them are almost unmakeable because of the poa, which can shoot the ball anywhere. Meanwhile, if someone doesn't have poa in their line, it's a pretty straight four foot putt.

This course would be a lot better if the rough was much thicker and the greens were something like paspalum.

Hootie 06-20-2015 01:05 PM

well you clearly know more than me so I'm not going to sit here and argue ... that's for sure

Here's an article about a tour pro playing a muni. A lot of the stuff he complains about is happening on these greens, with poa seed heads replacing sand:

I've played there many times. The greens are certainly in better shape.

tmw4h5 06-20-2015 02:16 PM

Anybody played Tiffany Greens this year? If so, how is the course looking/playing?

MahiMike 06-20-2015 02:42 PM

While you guys are trashing this setup, I love it. I've always wanted these whiny millionaires to come down to our level just a bit. They are so friggin' spoiled. We've never played on the manicured, perfect courses these guys get to play on.

In Missouri, we played on converted cow pastures where you lose your ball in the middle of the fairway.

Once a year they can play on something they consider "subpar".

Call me crazy, but I think that if you are trying to identify the best player in a national championship you might want a course whose greens actually allow good putts to go in.

If you want to see them brought down a level, take them to a course like Winged Foot that will beat the piss out of them, but in a fair manner.

There are certain courses that just should not host tournaments like this. I'm sorry, but Chambers' greens are just not good enough. Similarly, you don't see the top 20 Remax competitors at the top of the OWGR.

This is also why Olympic should never get a US Open--its fairways are a joke.

Love seeing reed implode. Hate that guy for some reason.

GloryDayz 06-20-2015 06:35 PM

Had to change it. It's just too hard watching people play on a purposely bad course.

O.city 06-20-2015 06:49 PM

It's the us open. I wanna see them beat up, but beat up fairly. I watched them play 2 majors at Southern Hills in tulsa. Tough track but fair

He's just a few PEDs from the trifecta.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-20-2015 06:59 PM

Oosthuizen was +9 at one point yesterday. Over his last 27 holes he's eight under, and he missed five putts inside of 10 feet.

He shot 66 today, could have easily shot 63, and no one else has finished better than 69.

When he's right he's as good as anyone, and he got right damned quick.

I heard that, that's a storyline they need to follow, and he's going to lose some sleep over those puts for sure...

If these guys keep backing up he may finish only two shots out of the lead. That's got to feel good when you were 14 back in the second round.

True, and should give him the confidence to press a lot tomorrow.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-20-2015 07:26 PM

Day just shot 68 obviously still suffering from balance issues. He would be a worthy winner if he keeps it together tomorrow. Far better than a one who sucks the penis like Dustin Johnson.

KCTitus 06-20-2015 07:27 PM

What a round by Jason Day...it makes the Tigerscuses almost silly

Day has been close enough to have paid his dues.

Golf isn't a fair game at all, but I firmly believe that guys should pay their dues first.

O.city 06-20-2015 07:34 PM

Days definitely paid du3s, he should have won a master's a fee years ago iirc.

He's definitely impressed me with his grit. Not something you automatically associate of with golfers, so I agree that he'd very-much be a worth winner if he can pull it out.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-20-2015 08:11 PM

I feel a little bad for Spieth today, but he made so many bombs at Augusta I'm having a hard time mustering up too much sympathy.

Whats to feel bad about? Sure, he's missed a few shorties for par/birdie...he's still there. I look forward to tomorrow. Only he's got a shot to keep the Grand Slam hopes alive.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-20-2015 08:21 PM

So, Ben Martin started today at -3, two shots back. He is now two shots out of last after carding a smooth 86 which included three doubles, one triple, and a quad.

He played the par 5s in seven over today.

KCTitus 06-20-2015 08:45 PM

Fantastic third round...have to say after Pinehurst last year really disappointing, good to see a close tournament. I think Speith has some putts to make tomorrow. After DJ getting screwed at Whistling Straits, there's plenty of good stories out there.

If Oostie has another 66 in him, could be very interesting.

O.city 06-21-2015 02:02 PM

If Adam Scott could putt, he be the best player in the world

Demonpenz 06-21-2015 04:19 PM

I want to see then crash and burn like I like to watch racing for the crashes.

Bowser 06-21-2015 04:33 PM

Sorry to break up the US Open talk, but I thought I'd drop in here and say that for Father's Day I received a set of Adams hybrid irons, 4 iron to lob wedge. Pretty stoked about this! These clubs coupled with the Taylor Made SLDR Drier and Ping Scottsdale putter I won at a raffle a couple of weeks ago just means I need to actually learn how to play this game now.

And Chambers Bay looks like Augusta compared to last years Pinehurst ..... USGA and Mike Davis need to chill ... it's the US Open. The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) motto is "we keep golf green" .... guess the USGA feels different.

tk13 06-21-2015 06:14 PM

These greens seem like such an adventure. It's amazing.

O.city 06-21-2015 06:40 PM

Come on Day.

I really wanna see a playoff. US open playoff is legit.

tk13 06-21-2015 06:40 PM

Dustin Johnson went from 2 up to 1 down just like that.

They are awful, but you can avoid that by just accepting that its going to be the dominant grass on your greens. Instead, the super and the USGA decided to piss up a rope.

Golf course superintendents are the single largest supporters of water conservation, because it stops the players/members from bitching every time there is a dime-sized patch of brown anywhere on the course.

Mizzou_8541 06-21-2015 07:05 PM

Dustin Johnson falling apart. I'm ok with that.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-21-2015 07:06 PM

If Dustin Johnson and Jim Furyk were playing fourball in the Ryder Cup, they could find a way to lose when dormie 5.

O.city 06-21-2015 07:07 PM

Its just too late in the year to play this type of course in that region. 8 weeks ago, the course looked beautiful and would have been great to play.

Theres just no reason to have them anywhere.

You can have great bentgrass anywhere, especially that area.

tk13 06-21-2015 07:13 PM

FOX is getting killed on Twitter because they're hardly showing Grace and he's tied for the lead.

No, you can't. You'll always get bent greens that are overtaken.

It's going to be hard as hell to grow bent greens there and not plow them under every five years because it doesn't get hot enough to burn the poa out. The shit grows everywhere.

The climate will grow bent, but it will grow poa better, and a species with superior adaptations will always win.

There's no reason to have the US Open on the Pacific coast because these are the greens they will always end up with.

They would have to treat and treat and treat, and it's still always going to come back.

Depends on your strain of bent, but yeah, it would always be tough.

You're just always going to have problems playing a poa green course with a championship finishing late in the afternoon.

Considering they can't show where the ball lands on 90% of the drives, I'm not terribly surprised.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-21-2015 07:18 PM

I remember one of the great criticisms of the climax of Tin Cup was that a green would never do that.

The stupidity of these pin positions has disproven that.

Mike Davis has set up this course like every green should have the Sunday pin on 7 or 16 at Augusta.

O.city 06-21-2015 07:18 PM

If Winged Foot, Pinehurst, Oakmont, Southern Hills, Medinah, Baltusrol, shit insert how ever many normal US open courses you want, were in Britian, they'd be on a cycle just like the Open.

O.city 06-21-2015 07:23 PM

Mike Davis is a clown.

Come on Louie

There are so many great courses that they've passed over for Torrey, Erin Hills, and Chambers. Somebody has to be getting their palms greased.

Inverness deserves another Open. It's almost 7300 yards now and is an absolute classic.

I would think you'd want the additional forgiveness from the cb, even though it would be incredibly modest. How often are you going to shape shots both ways?

Well if you don't mind brown patches on your course, this week was a 24x7 orgasm.

I get your point, all too often people expect too much perfection, but this is just terrible. But I work very VERY hard to keep my lawn as perfect as humanly possible, and I really appreciate well kept grass.

Every ****ing day bro. o:-)

I've got the old CB's, love them, but I've been hitting it like a champ lately so the devil inside me wants to go blades mainly just for the "go **** yourself I'm a stick" everytime someone looks in my bag.

I completely despise the setup, but, I just wanted to clarify how supers feel about water usage (usually).

O.city 06-21-2015 07:32 PM

Grace just rat****ed himself with that. Try to hit a draw under pressure, turns into a push cut slice. No bueno.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-21-2015 07:35 PM

If someone goes into 18 with a one shot lead it's going to be Lucas Glover at Bethpage all over again--teeing off with a six iron. Also, Lucas Glover is one of the five worst major champions of the last 40 years.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-21-2015 07:38 PM

Oosthuizen driving it into the bunker doesn't really matter, because you can't hold that green with a deep approach anyway.

And then Cameron Smith does that. Wow.

tk13 06-21-2015 07:39 PM

Spieth drops the hammer.

SPchief 06-21-2015 07:39 PM

Kill shot

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-21-2015 07:39 PM

I've never seen anyone who makes that many 20'+ putts. It's absolutely amazing. And it fell in the low side, too. That rarely happens.

Miles 06-21-2015 07:40 PM

Huge putt.

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-21-2015 07:42 PM

That lie will be interesting.

SPchief 06-21-2015 07:42 PM

Whoa

'Hamas' Jenkins 06-21-2015 07:47 PM

Spieth's shot here is actually a problem w/ the course setup. When you contour the greens like this, you actually end up giving players that shortside themselves by hitting terrible shots outs they don't deserve.

tk13 06-21-2015 07:49 PM

When Oosthuizen catches fire, he catches fire. Leader in the clubhouse.

SPchief 06-21-2015 07:50 PM

Damn

SPchief 06-21-2015 07:51 PM

WOW

tk13 06-21-2015 07:51 PM

And Spieth gives it right back. Double. And now Oosthuizen's tied for the lead.
