Has nothing to do with reviews. Read an early plot synopsis to determine if the movie was worth my money to see in theaters. It isn't.

Hammock Parties 06-28-2023 01:55 PM

SEE???

Quote:

Harrison Ford was great. He looked great, his performance was good and the action was age appropriate so it never felt silly.

The de-aging was incredible. That whole sequence was fantastic and I 100% believed that was just a young Harrison Ford. I also think they did a great job capturing what Indy would have looked like in 1945, kind of halfway between how he looked in Last Crusade and Crystal Skull. I would totally watch a whole movie made like that.

The last act is pretty wild, possibly divisive for some, but I liked it and I thought it a fitting final adventure for an archaeologist. And I thought Indy got a good, satisfying ending. They didnt pull a Luke Skywalker.

THE LEAKS WERE WRONG TURD

Quote:

Let’s talk about the ending without spoiler. Some has said it may be controversial to some. To my mind it wasn’t but it feels like it was a bit rushed, but not as if they had to redo the ending like some may have speculate (those who have made those rumours are soooo wrong). For sure, it is not a « ride on the sunset » ending, but it gives a closure.

Sassy Squatch 06-28-2023 02:01 PM

So John Williams and Harrison Ford were lying about the reshoots?

Hammock Parties 06-28-2023 02:08 PM

YOU'VE BEEN LYING TO YOURSELF THIS ENTIRE THREAD

Quote:

As a final crack of the whip, though, there’s not too much to complain about. Moment to moment it’s perfectly enjoyable, but having grown up with these films, watching it is a strange experience.

But the blockbuster spectacle isn’t really why Indiana Jones has endured for 42 years. He’s endured because of Ford and the small character moments that Spielberg smartly layered into that first film.

And it’s those that Mangold honours with a final scene that brings things full circle to one of the quietest moments in Raiders, giving the man in the hat the gruffly tender send-off he deserves.

You know what was a "ride into the sunset" ending?

The last scene of 'The Last Crusade" where they should've let the damn thing lie. When they LITERALLY rode off into the sunset as the credits rolled.

Thank GOD Disney is here to remind us - again - that all our heroes end up withered and broken shells of themselves for the majority of their lives. But hey, the last few months of it may be slightly less awful for them. So that's nice.

"After you, Junior..."
"Yes sir..."

{horses run through canyons and into the sunset...}

He GOT the gruffly tender send-off he deserved. You need to see him broken and henpecked by some snarky brit?

None of this ADDS to his story. It doesn't improve upon it. You're just desperately hoping they'll make chicken salad from this chicken shit.

DJ's left nut 06-28-2023 02:19 PM

I think I've discussed briefly the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy books before.

And I've told anyone who listens - the series stops at "So Long and Thanks for All the Fish..."

Don't read past it. Don't. It's a natural, easy and obvious end to the story. Our characters arcs have all come to an end. Unfortunately the 5th book happened...

Douglas Adams himself said he regretted 'Mostly Harmless...'. He was in a terrible place at the time, he was depressed and he acknowledge that the book detracted from the series. He hoped to write a 6th book to 'correct his mistake' and then he up and died instead.

That's what these two movies are - mistakes that do nothing but take away from the perfect stopping point. You have such a clear and clean ending to the story after Last Crusade. It wasn't depression that led to these movies - it was greed and a cynical cash grab. Neither of these movies exist to further a story - they exist to wring a few buck out of a cherished IP and at the EXPENSE of that IP.

After feeling let down by KOTCS, last night I let out a sigh of relief (No Spoilers)

Quote:

It was good, it was really good.

I've been watching these films since I can remember, graining taped off the TV tapes on a Saturday morning on our tiny color TV, making whips out of bits of string and wearing on of my mom's sun hats with my brother's oversized leather jacket.

Last night, I was that kid all over again. It hit all the beats, it felt like an Indy movie (Its not that I don't like KOTCS, it just never felt like an Indy movie)

I had the longest day at work so went to the final screening of the night, got out in the early morning, work again today, super tired but totally worth it, walked out with a smile on my face. That was a happy end to the franchise that I really needed.

Hammock Parties 06-29-2023 11:23 AM

HOME RUN

Quote:

James Mangold knows exactly what fans want and he delivers it in spades in this film, which delights in every minute it spends honoring its predecessors. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, who turned over the reins to Mangold, both serving only as executive producers on this film after having written and directed all four previous installments, picked the perfect director to take Indy into his final adventure. Mangold is a director with a particular knack at delivering high octane, audience-pleasing, fast-paced films that still manage to keep a core of humanity and vulnerability at its heart. In this era of action films aimed at teenagers that revel in fantasy and superheroes, Mangold makes thrilling films for adults, films like 3:10 to Yuma, Logan, and Ford v Ferrari. If there would be any director who could stay true to the Indiana Jones legacy of adventure, action and thrills while mining every bit of emotional (read: nostalgic) connection without falling into sentimentality, it is Mangold.

And he delivers.

Now let’s be real here, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is far from perfect. It gets really silly, especially in the final act, and some sequences are borderline over-the-top, but there is absolutely no denying the fact that I was grinning from ear to ear from start to finish, buoyed in part, yes, by the rush of nostalgic affection that was coursing through my 52-year old veins, but also by the sensational artistry and craft that went into the making of this film, a film that is everything a movie should be, the kind of movie that reminds you why movies were ever even made in the first place.

It’s impossible to not feel Spielberg’s influence and spirit in every frame. Oscar-winning production designer Adam Stockhausen (Grand Budapest Hotel, Bride of Spies, West Side Story) creates a visual world that brings you in and allows the actors to roam, breathe and maneuver through adventure after adventure, while Oscar-nominated cinematographer Phedon Papamichael (The Trial of the Chicago Seven, Ford v Ferrari) captures the essence of the adventure serials that inspired Lucas and Spielberg to create the character of Indiana Jones in the first place. No Indiana Jones film is complete without the iconic score by John Williams, and the same Oscar-winning editing team that created those thrilling racing sequences in Ford v Ferrari pull out all their tricks in the multitude of chase sequences here, most not even on wheels.

If you follow the chatter on social media sites, there will be a lot of bantering about where Dial of Destiny ranks in the pantheon of Indiana Jones films (Is it worse than Kingdom of the Crystal Skull? Nothing could ever be) or questions about whether Ford is too old to play Indy (No). If you are a fan of the Indiana Jones movies, in any way shape or form, you just need to tune it all out and take this film for no more and no less than what it is: a whole lot of fun. It is escapist entertainment with excellent action, lots of laughs, incredible production values and a heavy dose of nostalgia that is, guaranteed, at one point or another, to make your heart ever so slightly heavy at the thought that we’ll never see this again.

But if there’s any way to go out, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny finds the best way to say goodbye–by honoring the past, capturing the spirit of the franchise and doing exactly what Indiana Jones does best: going off into history in style—and the crack of a whip.

According to DisneyDining.com, Abigail Thorn has been cast as Ensign Eurus in the forthcoming Disney+ series alongside Amandla Stenberg, Jodie Turner-Smith, Dafne Keen and others.

Thorn has yet to confirm the news publicly. NME has contacted Disney+ for comment.

Thorn is a British actress, writer and director who produces the YouTube channel Philosophy Tube. Her recent work includes the play The Prince.

In October 2021 she came out as a transgender woman, sharing her new name, pronouns and story on her YouTube channel.

The Acolyte, led by Russian Doll co-creator Leslye Headland, is described as a mystery-thriller set in the final days of the High Republic era – a period set roughly 200 years before events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

The series joins an expansive slate of Star Wars TV shows including Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor and The Mandalorian – see the list here.

A TV series for Lando Calrissian, originally played by Billy Dee Williams and later by Donald Glover in Solo: A Star Wars Story, was also announced in 2020 from director and writer Justin Simien (Dear White People).

While details on the project have been few since, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy did acknowledge the series in an interview with GamesRadar in May 2022, saying they’re “still talking about Lando with Donald Glover”.

In other news, Andor was supposed to feature the franchise’s first ever F-bomb but it ended up being refused by Disney, while Pedro Pascal has revealed that he no longer appears on set for The Mandalorian.
Clay is supporting Kennedy, whose brain child is this garbled trash.

Incidentally, Indiana Jones had a "fresh" rating only in the 40s after its poor reception at Cannes. They recently bumped that up to 62%, by inviting a lot of shill Rotten Tomatoes nobodies to screen the film and, wink-wink, "give it an unbiased review," wink-wink. Chris Gore and Paulie of "The Latino Slant" attended that screening, and say that LucasFilm paid for their dinner and for drinks -- they wanted them to have a nice free buzz for the movie. And both said they've never been literally "wined and dined" for a screening before.

Like many recent releases, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is expected to have a reasonable opening weekend when it arrives in theaters worldwide on Friday, but for a film that comes with one of the biggest budgets of the summer that isn’t really good enough to ensure its success. Currently, Dial of Destiny is expected to open on $65 million domestically, and only $140 million worldwide. Considering the reported $295 budget of Indy’s swansong, along with a heft marketing campaign, this puts the fifth and final Indiana Jones adventure on the same shaky ground as the likes of The Flash, which has been a massive underperformer in the last few weeks.

I don't need some snot-nosed brat that's 40 years Indy's junior stealing his thunder.

Karen Allen had about 40 minutes of screen time in a roughly 2 hour movie. If early reviews are to be believed, THIS movie is essentially a Phoebe Waller Bridge vehicle that's used to tie up an Indiana Jones loose end. And by most accounts, the most enjoyable part of the movie is the first 20 minutes that don't have her in it.

Marion is such a badass character. And yes, a 'strong, independent woman' - but she's a worthy foil/ally of Indy's; a legitimate peer. She's not his ****ing wetnurse and the smartest character in the room every time she's on screen.

Actually, Marion spends a good chunk of the movies being shrill and needing saving by Indy. Hell, she screams almost much as Willie. Still a great character.

Unlike whatever the new female is.

"****ing miles better than Crystal Skull & that's all I really needed"

"It was a great movie. Fun as hell."

"I really liked it. Definitely had some flaws but what I liked I really loved. The final scene was the perfect way to end this series."

"I just got out of it and thought it was fantastic. I'd give it a solid 8.5 out of 10. I think it's got some problems, but they are few and far between, and even a lot of the problems I do have are minor ones."

"I think to me, the most important thing, it felt like an Indy movie. And flaws and all, that’s what matters most to me."

"What I loved was that it was about characters, and telling a story the whole way through. They didn't just stop having any character development whatsoever halfway through the movie in favor of endless action sequences the way that Crystal Skull does. For the entire duration of the movie Indiana Jones is actively doing something, and even the characters around him are growing and changing in their own way as a result of their time with Indy."

"I saw the movie this afternoon (RPX theater). I would give it a solid 8/10."

Rumors confirmed without a doubt. I'm just glad KK didn't get her way with the original abysmal ending and folks are having a good time with it. Still a bit baffled why she hasn't been fired.

Yikes. Tracking for a 65 million opening. That puts it firmly in bomb territory, although that's way more to do with just how much they've spent making/promoting it.

On track for a 6 million Thursday. For comparisons sake Crystal Skull got 25 million on its opening Thursday.

When all the audience going to an established series is the fanboys, and the people who've already been driven off are missing along with the non-existent casual watchers, you get an artificially high audience score.

That's how you end up with TLJ being the #4 audience rated Star Wars movie at rottentomatoes.com.

We see the same thing in sports, too, where crappy teams still have a loyal core that puts up with just about anything. This isn't some phenomenon that's exclusive to movies.

The Florida political and litigation meddling was the death blow, because they could've shelled more subpar movies/streaming shows if they didn't add their opinion and pursued a lawsuit in said state.

Maybe, but Disney's been withering on the vine for a while and, while the wokeness has been a part of it, a lot of other problems have added to it.

I'm making sense. Sorry you choose to ignore it.

Go look at where the critics ranked SW Ep 7. Maybe that'll help you figure it out. If it doesn't, try to realize that I'm not making a direct comparison between Star Wars and Indiana Jones, but am merely using another of your movie franchise binkies as a demonstration.

I hope this movie is better than advertised, and I hope it makes the money it deserves either way. But, as with so many other movies we've seen go belly up lately, it's not starting out looking good.

Dial of Destiny - initial thoughts - no spoilers. It's feels like the Fate if Atlantis.

Guys and gals.... It's so good. No one is annoying. No one is usurping Indy. It doesn't drag in the middle. It feels 1000 times more "real" and tactile than KotCS. It feels closest to Raiders for me. Honestly, it's a combination of Raiders and The Fate of Atlantis.

It's. So. Good.
