Motor Vehicle Tax
 

Anybody know what it is around here? I just bought a "new" used vehicle from a private party and I was wondering how much I can say I bought it for and get away with it so I'm not charged and arm and a leg in tax. Dane will be happy to know the vehicle is worth much more than 2K. I gave in to societal norms. Damn it

Find your county, and make sure to add that % to the state tax of 4.225%.

So say I bought a vehicle for 11K from private party...could I put down 2K or are they going to freak out and call my bluff?

I always thought it was based on what the car was worth (according to some standard) rather than what you paid for it. Could be wrong, though.

I think that is what Kansas does now. We used to tell them we traded a room full of furniture for it.

Yeah, when I lived in Missouri I said I bought my car for about 100 dollars. I was charged almost no sales tax for it. But I bought the car for $650 so it wasn't like it was a big deal.

If it's a scrap vehicle you might be able to pull that off. But the state has been wise to that scam for a good while. They'll also check with the vehicle's previous owner on occasion.

Been trying to find out stuff for you. All I can find is that there are forms you have to sign saying who sold it, who bought it, how much, etc. Can't find any rates though.

A long time ago, we bought a car off my uncle for $1000. On the Bill of Sale, he put down $50 so we wouldn't have to pay but a few dollars for sales tax. That's in Missouri, though.
