Has anyone been a patient at the Mayo Clinic?

My wife is going here in about 30 days and would like to know if anyone has been and what to expect? We are setup to go to the one in Minnesota.

I have not. Why does your wife need to go to Mayo, if I might ask? Hope everything's ok.

Well RJ not to be an ass, but I doubt everything is OK if she's going to Mayo. I've known alot of people that have gone to Mayo with mixed results. The one good thing I will say is there is no ego amongst the doctors and they'll think outside the box.

I have.

They know their stuff up there, and they'll stick you once when others take twice.

I didn't enjoy my trip up there because of what they were doing, but they were thourough and I was most pleased that the expert basically said "We can continue and do test x,y,z..." and when pressed said "if i found xyz result, I'd probably recommend the same treatment"...and I said "well why go through all of that bullshit if this is what you think it is and would treat the same anyway"...and for once, a doctor actually agreed.

It was different than other places I'd been, especially university docs....

good luck.

Best of luck to your wife and family.

Took my daughter to the one in Jacksonville a couple years ago. They are very efficient -- it is an impressive operation form an efficiency point of view. We ended up having to make two trips because her coordinating physician wanted her to see some other specialists and those visits need to be schedule days or weeks in advance. The doctors are the best in the world, but that doesn't guarantee a complete diagnosis or cure. There are still things that medical science just hasn't figured out yet.

Best wishes, I hope you guys find what you are looking for there.

A good read is a book called "The Brothers Mayo". I think the author is named Clapsattle.

Yep, it's like going to a country club. They treat you like royalty.

Top notch place, took my mom up there a few years back for a problem she was having. They are just amazingly organized and efficient, and most of all they are not afraid to consult with another doc if they can't figure out what is going on.

If you haven't got your stay figured out yet, we stayed at Extended Stay America up there, bought 1 week blocks on Hotwire for and very good price. And by all means when you need a little comfort food that's close to the main campus you've got to go to:

One bit of advice I would give is once you get going you will have a schedule of tests and appointments to make, once you get finished with one, go to the next one early as a stand-by. We knocked out about 5 days of tests and diagnostics in 2 days doing that.

Oh, and unless they've fixed it, you may want to bring a mouthpiece to protect your teeth for the trip down I-90...

Odd. With my mothers recent health problems and lack of insurance the university hospital/docs were leaps and bounds more helpful than private hospitals/docs....probably because they aren't trying to turn a profit.

Her crohn's disease is in a flare up and the doctors that have been treating her for several years have run out of ideas and drugs to try and have declared uncle and decided to send her on to the best.

We will have to try that place out for a meal or two, and thanks for the advice for going early.

So far we are in day 2. Day 1 we started out with a Doctor visit and a CT scan and blood work. After a rather lengthily history of her Crohns disease about 5 minutes in to examining her they believe it to be nerves in abdominal wall firing off for no reason(She has only had 2 surgeries) and not her Crohns. Yesterday they had her setup to go to pain management in March, we stop by this morning by Pain management and they have a cancellation for Monday, which works out since the weather doesn't look good to at least till Tuesday to head back to KC.
