RIP Shon

Seven years ago, my wife's cousin Shon was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 30. After two surgeries and several rounds of chemo, the brain cancer went into remission. However, since being diagnosed, he was unable to drive a car or work due to occasional seizures and overall weakness. But this didn't stop Shon from living his life. In the last few years, he and his wife have adopted two little girls. Shon was their stay-at-home dad. For the last year or so Shon been battling a form of leukemia, probably brought on by his chemotherapy treatments and has been in and out of the hospital on a regular basis. Through this all, Shon kept a great attitude. I don't know of anyone that ever saw him get down about his situation. He had tremendous faith every step of the way. Prior, to being diagnosed for brain cancer, Shon worked in hazardous waste management and clean up. But he never blamed his cancer on his job, that just wasn't his way. Oh yeah, and Shon was a Chiefs fan.

Last night, Shon lost his battle. Shon wouldn't want anyone to feel sorry for him, as his Lord has rescued him from this veil of tears and he is in a better place than any of us. He wouldn't mind you saying a prayer or sending good thoughts toward his wife and daughters. And he wouldn't mind you living every day of your life to it's fullest. RIP, Shon.

Sorry to hear. These types of stories make me realize that a) I'm a very lucky guy and b) I need to make better use of my time.

CD:

A prayer for his family....it's courageous people like this that make you feel bad when you've had a bad day and feel pity for yourself. If we all could be a little more like him, maybe we could make this place a better world.

I hope the two little girls that Shon and his wife adopted are old enough to remember their dad. All the best to the loved ones Shon left behind.

This times a thousand....I feel fortunate to have lived as long as I have, and sometimes have taken that for granted.

I have had 2 people pass away recently that have made me stop and ponder mortality. (Not to the point of detriment) One was one of my good friends in the Credit industry who was as much a health conscious person as I have ever seen..(made Big Daddy seem mild). He passed away from a Brain aneurysm at 53....he was just one month younger than me.

The other was my Sis-in-Law who died of a massive heart attack one week after turning 56. Her mother found her slumped over in her condo when she went to check on her.

Life truly is fragile....and I admire those who know that, and still live life with dignity and grace. It appears that your wife's cousin was one of those people.

You got it, bud.

kcxiv 07-05-2010 11:55 AM

Sorry to hear about that bud. I have a good very good friend going through a battle right now. She just got out of the hospital after being there 12 months almost died countless times, immune system crashed twice. Kidney's all messed up. Bone Marrow transplant. Overcame all that, got out for 3 weeks, then her kidney had a tumor, Cancerous. Now, she has to go through a surgery which she did, and 3 more chemo treatments.

Cancer is a bitch. They go through hell and back.
