Which was a better game, NFL 2k5 or Madden NFL 2005?

Simple question. Which game do you feel was the better product?

NFL 2K5... best football game ever made (Outside of Tecmo Super Bowl ;) )

Madden still hasn't been able to match the presentation or the gameplay. I hope someday the exclusive license expires and 2K can make football again.

Micjones 10-08-2010 12:53 PM

2K Sports used to shit all over EA and the Madden franchise.
I'm glad they're working to get another license for 2013.

RustShack 10-08-2010 12:53 PM

I guess I never did play 2k5... but I think Madden 05 was one of the last real good ones.. I still think 03 was by far the best though.

Personally i believe that 2k was alot better, but with the price factored in, it clearly made it the superior game.

Agreed.

ESPN's 2K5 was the superior game by miles.

It did all the extra things that Madden's EA team couldnt care less about.

Here are some examples.

1. Broken Tackles. Madden, basicly you get hit and fall down or you do some type of super pwnage stiffarm to break the tackle. ESPN had where the defender wraps up the ball carrier, but if you had charged up your shoulder charge, or repeatedly hammered the X button you could drive your legs and get out of the tackle.

2. Full, free flowing conversation style commentary. Madden didnt even start doing that until the 09 game, and even now Madden's commentary cant stand up to ESPN's game.

3. Penalties. ESPN's game enforced penalties that Madden STILL doesnt even acknowledge the existence of.

Illegal Contact
Illegal Touching of the Pass
Ineligible receiver downfield
Intentional Grounding

4. Challenge system. Madden thinks it can read your mind and know what you're challenging. You want to challenge whether or not you fumbled that ball, and Madden assumes youre challenging the spot of the ball. ESPN's game brought up an enormous freaking list of things possible in that play that you could challenge, and you select if from the list.

5. Presentation. Halftime highlights with Chris Berman Pwn'd anything Madden 05 had to offer.

6. Extras. By performing well on the field, you could make upgrades to your user profile's "crib". Mini games such as paper football and darts were really cool additions.

7. Profile system. You could play the game and it would map what your tendencies were. I used to play this game with my buddies all the time, and even when they werent there I could load their profiles into the opposing team, and they would call plays based on the tendencies of my friends. If they blitzed 70% of the time on D, you could rest assured that the CPU would call just as aggressively.

Bottom line, ESPN 2k5 was superior to Madden 05 in about every facet of the game. To top it off, their game was only TWENTY BUCKS.

To counter this, EA didnt try to make a better game, they just cornered the market and secured the NFL license for themselves.

I CANNOT fuckING WAIT until that deal expires.

ESPN NFL 2K13 FTMFW!!!!

NFL 2K5 was one of the best sports games in the history of video games. I don't understand how anyone who played both games can say otherwise.

You should have made this poll public. :(

I think Madden 05 was the last in the series I played, but I liked 2K5 way better.

If the game hadn't been a threat, both in quality and in price, EA wouldn't have bought exclusivity.

Never played NFL 2k5.

Yeah, I remember how bad I felt for Take Two when they decided to go with the $20 price tag to hopefully have people give it try and see how much better than (the household name) Madden it was. They decided to forgo possible profits for 2004 in hopes that it would create a much bigger fanbase for their future releases. Too bad EA stepped in and killed the bird before it could take off. Oops.

I still have NFL 2K5. Best sports game ever made, and it was $20. Can't wait until the Madden exclusivity expires.

I was going to buy Madden that year, but when I saw a $20 football game out I bought it. To my surprise it was amazing.

Ming the Merciless 10-08-2010 01:21 PM

Nfl 2k5 was amazing...And it was 20$...That was the year the NFL sold its soul to the Devil (EA) and ruined football games for 10 years. We as consumers can only wait until their dirty deal is done before having a good game again....

The crib, trophies, and 1st person mode were all pretty innovative.
