Thoughts:

This is a particularly weak draft. I struggled to fill out the 3rd round with players I felt deserved to be third round picks.

The draft is only truly, classically "deep" at one position this year: corner.

This is a historically bad year for TEs.

After the first round, two positions completely fall off a cliff in terms of quality: tackle, and quarterback

I have four QBs with a first round grade, and Mallet and Kaepernick are high 2nds.

If the Chiefs were to draft strictly off the corresponding numbers off this board, they'd get:

21. OT Derek Sherrod, Mississippi State
55. DE/DT Christian Ballard, Iowa
86. OG Orlando Franklin, Miami

Given the fact we only have 2 OT's on the roster under contract, and a possible retirement comming up for Wiegmann, under your ranking system, I would go with...

21. Sherrod OT Mississippi State
55. Hudson C Florida State

NFLNetwork the other day had a piece on who they thought was going to be 2nd day stars. Hudson was mentioned by one of the hosts as being very comparable to Ryan Kalil from the Panthers.

Offensive line should be set for years to come.

I think it's a pretty solid draft.

The defensive line position is ridiculously good, and the top five offensive tackles look to be high floor, high ceiling type players. You've also got three "generational" level talents in Von Miller, Pat Peterson and AJ Green.

The guard position also looks really good, and Rod Hudson of Florida State might actually qualify as a "generational" type guy at his position. (He reminds me of Will Shields - his body type, style of play and production are almost identical to Shields.)

Cornerback is extremely good and deep.

Center and nose tackle look solid as well.

It's a very nice fullback class too.

And I like the offensive tackle depth in this class. You've got five guys who should be legit NFL left tackles, and a ton of really good right tackle prospects. When you have a guy like Lee Ziemba, who was a first team Walter Camp and a four year starter at tackle for the National Champs, being mentioned as a fourth/fifth rounder, that's a deep class. A lot of sleepers as well, such as Rob McGill from LaTech. Solid tackle class.

The RB position is not deep.

The safety class is the worst of all positions in this draft

I'm not sold on converting a guy to a position that he's never played. Hudson is one of the best guards coming out of college, and maybe the best since Will Shields. However, he is only being "projected" to the center position. He never started at that position in college (he has played there sparingly because of injuries during games).

Guys like Wisniewski and Pouncey struggled at the position when they played it and Wis was actually moved back to guard after being at the center spot his junior year.

There is a lot of high quality true centers out there, and a number who should excel in a zone system. Kirkpatrick, Baxter, Barnes, Taylor, Linnenkohl, Bartholomew are all solid pivots that would work well in this blocking scheme.

However, I think that Hudson is a very special talent and possesses skills that bely his "average" size. He's dominant as a blocker and really drives even the biggest defenders around with ease. He has played some center (as well as tackle) for the Seminoles and would absolutely excel in a zone scheme.

If he's there is the second, it would be a completely solid pick. Sherrod in the first and Hudson in the second would indeed solidify the offensive line for a decade.

LT: Sherrod
LG: Albert
C: Hudson
RG: Asamoah
RT: ?

(Make Ryan Harris your #1 free agent priority and you've potentially got one of the best lines in football.)

I agree. In hindsight, the front office did the team good by selecting Berry and Lewis in last years draft.

Picking up a guy like Derrick Sherrod would fill the void of passing on Okung for Berry last year and make sense in terms of drafting to the strengths of the draft as it relates to the needs of the team.

I guess if you are moving Albert into the LG position, you could go ahead and grab Franklin in the 3rd. I have read where several GM's think he has more athleticism and long term potential than Castanzo and Carimi.

I'd rather spend the first on Sherrod than a third on Franklin, who is probably more of a NFL right tackle than left. Take that third rounder and use it on a guy like Jerrell Powe, NT, Ole Miss. or any of the solid wide receivers that should be there like Austin Pettis, Niles Paul, or Edmund Gates.

That is what I meant, Franklin to fill your open RT position.

LT Sherrod
LG Albert
C Hudson
RG Asamoah
RT Franklin

Gotcha.

I think I'd still like to pick up Ryan Harris in free agency to give the line some experience. Harris, when healthy, is one of the top RT's in the game and excels in a zone system. Denver isn't going to sign him and since the Chiefs have a lot of cap room, they should be able to afford him even if the bidding gets a little high. He's only 26 as well.

Take that third rounder and get the NT or WR that this team needs.

Something like:

1. Derek Sherrod, OT; Miss State
2. Rod Hudson, C/G; Florida State
3. Jerrell Powe, NT; Ole Miss
4. Austin Pettis, WR; Boise State
5. Jermey Beal, LB; Oklahoma
5. Vincent Brown, WR; San Diego
6. Tom Keiser, OLB; Stanford
7. Robert Hughes, FB/RB; Notre Dame

Hog's Gone Fishin 04-17-2011 01:47 PM

Pioli won't draft an OT in the first. Why is it even discussed ?????????

Chiefnj2 04-17-2011 01:49 PM

My big board for KC would start with:

1. AJ Green
2. Julio Jones
3. Von Miller
4. Marcel Dareus
5. Patrick Peterson
6. Cameron Jordan

Yeah, that OL would be pretty young. But you could maybe open the season

Sherrod
Albert
Hudson
Lilja
Richardson

just to have some experience to let Sherrod and Hudson learn with, then gradually move Asamoah and Franklin into the rotation.

And not saying I would do that either, players just kind of fell that way in your stacking of the top 96 players.
