And none of the 100 largest are in Florida. That's my other surprise takeaway. |
Dude. Why do you have a Bears avy? I know it's bad... but you don't switch teams. You just don't.
|
Approximately 34 percent of those 100 largest islands have no population. And one of them, Long Island, has more people than the other 99 combined.

I'm guessing they are counting PR itself, then Viequez.

However, the largest island in the United States (Hawaii's Big Island) is only the world's 76th largest island.
Canada's Baffin Island is the 5th largest in the world. Get with the program, United States. Sheesh. |
Even worse. Antarctica, which has one single national claim, but is shared by multiple countries, has THREE islands larger than our Big Island.
|
We really need to improve our island sizes if we want to keep up with the rest of the world.
|
So how big does something have to be before it's too big to be called an island and becomes a...well, whatever it becomes once it's too big to be considered an island?

Vancouver Island.
The island is 460 kilometres (290 mi) in length and 80 kilometres (50 mi) in width at its widest point. At 32,134 km2 (12,407 sq mi), Vancouver Island is the largest Pacific island east of New Zealand,[nb 1] the largest island on the western side of North America, the world's 43rd largest island, Canada's 11th largest island, and Canada's second most populous island after the Island of Montreal. The Canada 2011 Census population is 759,366. [5] Nearly half of these (344,630) live in Greater Victoria. Other notable cities and towns on Vancouver Island include Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Parksville, Courtenay, and Campbell River. |
