Thanks. Recommend any particular version?

I cant recommend any version other than the Ubuntu 12.04 that is known to fit on a single CD. I never got into Ubuntu. I always liked playing around with Red Hat but that's ancient now. you're best off going with whatever is the most current and can still meet your size requirement. That way, the geeks will want to help you because you are using something they use too

Knoppix

Knoppix is great and so is Puppy Linux
There is also Damn Small Linux Check them all out here http://distrowatch.com/ |
Will have to try one of these. I found a CD with Ubuntu 8.04 and installed it. It came with Firefox 3.something. I tried to upgrade the Ubuntu and kept getting errors about checking my connection. When I tried to update the Firefox the upgrade button was grayed out. I am a noob at this Linux stuff just trying to get something that works well.

For somebody that's completely new to Linux, I would suggest Mint.

Editions for Linux Mint 12 "Lisa" Last version of Mint that will still fix a CD.

I managed to put Mint with Mate of the PC. Pretty slow due to the hardware limitations. It is definitely not like Windows in file names etc. Try to get my bearings with this crazy crap.

Old crappy Dell. Dimension B110. Out of the box it had XP. 512 Meg RAM, Intel Celeron, 80GB Hard Drive

oh snap. You might be in slackware territory with that kind of hardware.

I've run Mint on a machine like that.
