J Diddy 04-02-2013 01:07 AM

So some prayers/good thoughts would be appreciated

As I mentioned briefly in the Easter thread, I had an angioplasty and another test procedure done on my heart today. The good news is that I have no obstructions, the bad news is I have a congenital heart defect and a bad valve. Tomorrow I'm meeting with a cardiac surgeon to determine the best course of action.

I'm pretty much scared out of my mind.

mikey23545 04-02-2013 01:17 AM

I know it's useless for me to tell you how commonplace heart surgery is these days, and to not be overly stressed out even if your cardiac surgeon recommends a valve replacement.

But at least I've got experience to back up these comforting platitudes. I've had a few procedures myself, and been through a couple of heart attacks and a stroke. Got a pacemaker/defibrillator ticking away in my chest, and enough hardware in my cardiac arteries to build a stopwatch. I've had two different cardiac surgeons botch what should have been simple procedures (oops, maybe I should have left that part out LOL) and I'm still kickin'.

You will endure, bud...Hang in there!

Thanks man for sharing that. That helps a ton, knowing that you've been there.

mikey23545 04-02-2013 01:36 AM

And luckily it hasn't deprived me of my ability to post on Chiefsplanet at all!

Seriously though, Hope you're over the hump and feeling better soon, JDiddy!

CrazyPhuD 04-02-2013 01:56 AM

So now you really don't want us to draft Geno with the first pick!

Best of luck man, there's a reason why cancer is killing more people these days. It's not because cancer is more lethal than it used to be. It's that our treatment and diagnosis of things like heart disease has gotten so much better that it's way less of a concern than it used to be.

Yea it's scary and yes it's life way of reminding you what's really important in life, but it's not nearly the risk it used to be.

J Diddy 04-02-2013 02:07 AM

I appreciate it guys, however, I don't think anyone is going to convince me to a point of easiness about the thought of someone cutting me open and operating on my heart.

Ming the Merciless 04-02-2013 02:58 AM

Shit....I hate doctors....I especially hate hospitals.....

Real sorry to hear you have to go through this.....

But you do have the full power and force of the chirfsplanet praying and thinking good thoughts

Oh and you have me too.

The medical tech is amazing today....you're in good hands between the docs and CP

Chiefs=Champions 04-02-2013 03:45 AM

Prayers sent. Good luck dude

Fritz88 04-02-2013 04:14 AM

Good luck man, you will be okay buddy.

I know for a fact that your mental state affects how your body responds, so be relaxed and confident that you have the strength ( and you do ) to beat this problem and you will.

Wow, you are in my thoughts and prayers J Diddy. I am sure it will turn out well, as the medical profession in this field has accomplished amazing things.

It has been 5 1/2 years now since I got my 4 stents and it changed my life for the better, I am much healthier now. The valve thing is more invasive, but I just had friend get a new one that is almost 70, and he did fine. You are much younger and stronger so you have an advantage.

All the best to you!

King_Chief_Fan 04-02-2013 05:55 AM

Praying you have a positive recovery.

Mother****erJones 04-02-2013 05:58 AM

Good luck man my dad just had a triple bypass in December is now all well and doing great. You will be fine

blaise 04-02-2013 06:08 AM

Sorry to hear it. I hope you get some good news from the surgeon.

spanky 52 04-02-2013 06:09 AM

Praying everything goes well concerning your heart. I mean that.

bevischief 04-02-2013 06:10 AM

Good luck.

cabletech94 04-02-2013 08:42 AM

You ll beat the shit out of this thing, brother. And what everybody else said. Med tech is really up there nowadays.
Positive thoughts.

frankotank 04-02-2013 08:54 AM

done.

patteeu 04-02-2013 09:01 AM

You'll be fine, J Diddy. Heart surgeons are magicians these days. You have nothing to worry about at all. Even if they have to do surgery, you'll be up and back in the swing of things in no time. It's almost like having your tonsils removed these days. Good luck.

Buehler445 04-02-2013 09:03 AM

Thoughts and prayers buddy. I'm not at all looking forward to crap like this that comes with age.

Good luck. Positive thoughts. Everything will be fine.

I suggest not to watch any Chiefs games this year with Alex Smith as starting QB.

Good luck God speed.

Dayze 04-02-2013 09:16 AM

I think he is pretty young, maybe about 30? Edit, he is young, 38.

J Diddy 04-02-2013 09:31 AM

I just talked to the cardiac surgeon and they are going to transport me to KU to have a mechanical heart valve put in. I don't know what is going to happen. Call me a wimp, but I'm honestly scared out of my mind.

I'd feel the same way, but stay positive and T&P's man. I'm sure everything will work out for you.

You're going to arguably the best hospital in the area for this so they'll take great care of you. The doctors there are top notch. It sucks that this is required, but it's great that you caught it without having a catastrophic event.

Don't fall in love with the nurses. They're like Hooters girls. They're paid to be nice to you. Enjoy it for what it is.

of course you're scared.
right now, the best you can do is try to relax and let them do their jobs. I know it's easier said than done.
best of luck.

Nobody can blame you for being scared, but you are in fantastic care, and they are going to do their jobs well.

Freaking out is normal. But, the reality is that its a very common procedure these days. Your in good hands. Good luck.

mikey23545 04-02-2013 02:45 PM

I wish I could calm those ol' bubbleguts down for you, JDiddy, but we both know that isn't possible.

Just find out everything you can about the procedure beforehand, because believe it or not it helps to calm your nerves if you have a firm grasp of what's about to happen...It really is true that fear of the unknown is the worst fear there is...

Braincase 04-02-2013 02:51 PM

I've got an issue as well, and I'm going to put it off as long as the cardiologist says it's safe to do so. My prayers are with you as you tackle this issue. One of my wife's best friends is involved in the heart valve space, and she's a genius. What they've done with that technology over the last twenty years is incredible, and the materials they use now are right out of science fiction. Just keep saying to yourself "Everything is going to be fine." Seems to be my mantra these days.

Fritz88 04-02-2013 03:01 PM

As has been said you're in a good place and you're young(er than Bob Dole) so those are plusses. Take tomorrow to focus on trying to relax and telling yourself it will be fine, I can do this.

Prayers to you and yours Diddy.

My mom has been through 3 of those, the hardest one was the first with the heart attack being the root cause. She said the other two were cake, so it's a good thing you found out before the heart attack. You'll be just fine sir. :D

Swanman 04-03-2013 07:37 AM

Best of luck to you. Heart valve replacements are scary but they are a very common procedure nowadays and the technology has advanced light years in the past several years.

Thats actually a good sign. I'm assuming its because when they intubate you for the surgery they want an easier path to get the job done, correct? If so, they don't feel rushed and are real comfortable with a successful outcome.

I know it sucks and you can't keep from worrying. Nothing we can say will prevent that. But, trust me, after 9 years of working with some seriously ill patients in hospitals, this is a serious but routine surgery and you will be back on your feet real soon.

Goddamn. You're going to be the 6 million dollar man before this is over. :D.

BRC is right though. If it had to happen now, there would be no oral surgery.

How's the hospital food? I bet KU has some decent stuff.

After surgery, do what the nurses tell you to do and it will help your recovery. They'll probably have you up walking around surprisingly soon.
