What's the weirdest shit you listen to?
I'm going to be shameless for a minute and ask for your most unusual music recommendations.
I'm in need of some new stuff that doesn't sound like anything else in my collection. Throw me your weirdest shit. It doesn't even have to be good -- just, ****ing strange music. YouTubes are encouraged, but just tell me the artist/album/song and I'll look it up on my own. ANY and ALL recommendations are welcomed. Expand me. |

Animal Collective. Their new stuff is downright melodic compared to their older material. Still a fun listen.
|
Probably Skrillex.
Oh, and Ace of Base. |
Weird huh? Here's some weird shit. Hope you enjoy. Oh, and like phish said Animal Collective deserves a serious nod too.

Also, Jandek. Look him up. Pretty odd.

GREAT recommendation. Is Xiu Xiu worth pursuing? What other songs/albums from them might you recommend? Keep it up, folks. |
Have you ever heard this cover of Sabbath's War Pigs?

My favorite music of all time. Big Band.
Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen - Performed by Janis Segal in the movie Swing Kids (really a fantastic musical with Christian Bale & Robert Sean Leonard of Wilson fame on House). <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/XwKf5rXSBHI" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Louis Prima - Oh Marie <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/JJKTt30kMeA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Louis Jordan - Buzz me Baby <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/DCWUvI7yKtQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Cab Calloway - Jumpin Jive (just the first 1:45 though the rest is pretty neat) <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_8yGGtVKrD8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Django Reinhardt - Le Meilleur de Django - Minor Swing (w/Stéphane Grappelli on violin) <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/kxW4FIlO58o" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Duke Ellington - It Don't Mean A Thing <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/j-ny4WF5xYc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> If you want more I'll post more. |

Scott Walker is pretty weird, but still a fun listen.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ih7KzKLLWA Sorry, I don't know how to imbed, but you should watch the video as well it adds to the experience. Check out Merzbow if you are into some harsher noise type stuff. |

You need to check out the Bryan Ferry Orchestra: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/01wQa0ctK-Y" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Please, capone, feel free to provide a ton of shit. I really enjoyed it. I hestitate to say which songs I enjoyed more than the others because (a.) I enjoyed them all, and (b.) I don't want to influence what music you're willing to share. Fire away. |
Quote:
As for Scott Walker, I am a huge fan of The Drift, the only album of his I've listened through. You're right, he is definitely out there. Really challenging music. Edit: I'm listening through "Epizootics!" right now, and it is gorgeous. Any more recommendations, fire away. |
Does Cake count?
It's definately weird. |

Wow. I thought I listened to some weird shit. You guys are off the damn walls. Where did you find this stuff? I'm going to spend a lot of time looking through this.
Direkshun, I apparently listen to pretty mainstream shit, but here are my off the beaten path recommendations... Taking Back Sunday - All their albums are good, but I like the first and second ones the best. OAR - I'm sure you know them If you haven't checked out the Piano Guys, do it. You're probably not into Country but check out Turnpike Troubadours Diamonds and Gasoline album. Along with Jason Boland Pearl Snaps. I'll do some more thinking on it. I'm sure there is some more stuff that I could come up with. |
Maybe not so much weird as different but Alabama 3 is a fav of mine. They have a lot of different sounds and you probably know them best if you ever watched The Sopranos as they sang the opening song Woke Up This Morning.

Glenn Miller - In The Mood - Glenn Miller volunteered to enter the US Army and was a Captain when a plane bringing him home disappeared and was never recovered.
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/MO9nzpZIoFk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Jay McShann - Swingmatism - Based out of KC <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Sr6G3iGYzik" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Jimmy Lunceford - Tain't What You Do <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/1SkoD2CIakQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Lionel Hampton - Lavender Coffin <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Vg_pi0r75mA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Lavern Baker - On Revival Day <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/dCKOBVB46fA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Louis Prima & Keely Smith (his wife) - Embraceable You <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/roheaHSBrRU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Ella Fitzgerald - Bill Bailey, Won't You Please Come Home <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/OthWvIBBDhg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Andrews Sisters & Danny Kaye - Civilization <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/VEyDNTLlRgU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Daniel Johnston. He's a folk singing Christian fundamentalist with Bi-polar. I really like his early stuff, he played his music on old out-of-tune pianos and guitars. He would record a bunch of songs on to cassette tapes and pass them out. Then, he would do it again because he didn't have a way to dub.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/B_HB_er0SeQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> I hadn't heard of him until I saw this documentary about him. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/2qtFPOxDMs4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Stereolab can piss people off at the party, but if nobody kills it once you hit 5 minutes it turns into a pretty cool dance jam. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/vgKptkUJ08s" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> My Bloody Valentine. Often imitated, never duplicated. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/j5EGtAF20Ck" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> A song that reminds one of a super mario water level. <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/5ltDyujqtm4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> These guys know how to jam. The Flaming Lips are obviously weird. Animal Collective was too weird for me so I haven't listen to them much so I settle for Broken Social Scene. |

As some may know I’m into Rockabilly. About a month ago I picked up a bass so I can learn some rockabilly slap and Mrs. Radar has requested that I learn this song. That’ll take a while though, I’m not nearly good enough yet.

About anything by HOS (Hearts Of Space) some pretty weird trippy stuff but most is very melodic and peaceful.
I like the Tibetan Bronze bells, Russian Orthodox Cathedral Music, Baroque Voices to name a few. This isn't Hearts of Space per se but close enough to get an idea: <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/SZQzW_QfPew" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
How about Severed Heads? They are pretty trippy.

Indie, whiteboy hip hop. |
You'll probably recognize his name from tons of movie soundtracks and producer credits for other artists, but his own music is incredible in its own right, wanna take a trip to the ninth ring of saturn without leaving the couch? then check out some Brian Eno...
