Why do the Dallas Cowboys get sucked off so much?
I really don't get it. Why are they always talked about?
I was watching PTI yesterday and they're talking about if you could own a sports franchise which would it be. Kornheiser say either the Yankees or the Cowboys because they're the two dominating teams in their respective sports. What? They haven't won anything in almost twenty years. Hell before the playoff win in 2010 it had been almost as long for them as it has been for the Chiefs. Yet every year we hear before the season about how good the Cowboys are going to be like its a given. I'm not a hater on the Cowboys, I'm pretty neutral, I just dont get the media slob job. |
Some people are still living in 1995.

Their fanbase is huge. Probably the largest in Pro Sports besides the Yankees if i had to guess.
More fans = more ratings= media talks about you more. Doesnt matter how good or bad the team is. |

They've done nothing in 15+ years, but it's like the Celtics, who were also dormant for 15 or whatever years but as soon as they were good again... |

They really were America's team in many ways. Consistently on MNF when that really was THE game of the week, etc. etc. |

Cowboys have been in the playoffs 30 years in the 47 years since the advent of the Super Bowl era. From 1966 to 1985 they went EVERY year excepting 1974 and 1984. That's making the playoffs damn near every year for 20 years in a row. :O
Playoff appearances (30) NFL: 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2009 |
Tons of people and money in Texas so they get tons of media love.
people are stupid enough to follow the media |

Niners SUCKED forever, then were GREAT for 12 or 15 years, then went back to sucking. And by sucking, I don't mean mediocre, I mean HORRIFIC. Pre-Walsh they were one of the worst NFL teams. Plus the Cowboys were great early in the NFL's history, when it was rising as a television power and becoming America's favorite sport. The NFL came along alot later. Count historical MNF appearances, and I bet it's Cowboys over Niners by 4:1 or more. I'm NOT a huge Cowboys fan, FTR, and I hate Jerry Jones. Just trying to explain why I think it is what it is. |

But being in the hunt, and giving your fans hope, is a big part of keeping your fan base. The Red Sox didn't win diddily for 80 years but the fans were fanatical because they had personality, and personalities, and were in the hunt many years. Even the heartbreak years builds resolve and love in the fan base. To LOSE fans, you must SUCK. |

If the Vikings weren't so ****ing reeruned, Dallas would not have had that success in the 90s.
|
During the 90's Dynasty, they hitched a shitload of bandwagon fans.
|
Your Mom is like the Dallas Cowboys. Hasn't looked good for 20 years, yet millions across the country still line up to get in for some reason. They always overpay for a very subpar performance, but keep coming back. She keeps saying that one of these days she'll break that record for the most people inside at one time. And though she's given it plenty of attempts, the results are just never good enough to claim the title. But still, the performances in the 70's through the 90's will always keep her relevant with guys talking around the watercooler.

Because Jerry Jones is a media darling. He's a star in the eyes of sports reporters.
Unlike Opie Hunt and his tightly clenched penny. |

Of course it does, but those types of years were VERY few and far between. Hell, 3 years after 1-15 they won the first of another set of Super Bowls. 20 straight winning seasons (NFL Record) 8 Super Bowl appearances (ties NFL Record) You can bitch about it, but it is what it is. Quote:
If Golden State wasn't so ****ing reeruned, Red Auerbach doesn't get Parish and McHale and put together the Big 3. If the Rochester Royals don't use the first pick in the NBA draft in 1956 on Sihugo Green, then Red Auerbach doesn't get Bill Russell and win 98 straight and 110 out of 13 championships. If 31 teams aren't reeruned and spend 198 picks picking players NOT named Tom Brady before the Pats take him in the 6th. Etc. ad infinitum. |
Maybe its the Size Matters theory?
Texas is the largest state in the US. |

As shitty as Jerry Jones has been as a GM the last 15 years he has done a good job at marketing the team. There's a reason why they split training camp between San Antonio and southern California. There's a reason why JJ built the largest stadium in the world. JJ wants to get the Cowgirl brand out there as much as possible. If they want to be a glamour team that lives in the past that's fine but to borrow a Texas term, they are rapidly becoming all hat and no cattle the last 15 years. If they have a huge fanbase around the country it's because they've been marketed that way.
|
Opie Hunt. That has a chance to stick.
|
Well if you are looking at it as to "why" you might own a team and you say Cowboys and Yankees, then its pretty simple. Money, enough said.

The hate on CP is in epic proportions right now. Laughable ROFL

Lots of good detail was provided earlier...
The Cowboys were huge in the 60s/70s/ some of the 80s/90s. Don Meredith, Roger Staubach, Troy Aikman... 30 playoff appearances, 21 Division Titles, 10 Conference Championships (8 modern era) and 5 Super Bowl Titles - '71, '77, '92, '93, '95 Texas is a big state, loves football ... The Cowboys (and their cheerleaders) were dominant and popular during the important early years and rise of the NFL. When the NFL on TV really took off, the Cowboys were a big part of it. Meredith was on MNF after he retired - did I mention the cheerleaders? Sure, they haven't done much in the last 15 years - so the younger generation of football fans don't get it and don't view them as America's Team. So, in 20 years... that moniker likely isn't used as much, if at all. Three SBs in the 90s really goes a long way in helping the last generation of fans (bandwagon and other) continue to make them a big draw with ratings. Fact is - when the Cowboys are on TV - ratings go up. And, I hate the Cowboys as much as anyone... maybe more, but you have to understand more than just the last 15 years. |
It's kind of like your lovefest with Cassel. Nobody here gets that either!

All I care about is winning. If you haven't won anything since your cheerleaders were still in diapers who gives a shit?

Well, at least Tebow and Manning have done a good job of diverting attention towards Dallas...
|
I have a bigger question:
Why do the Miami Dolphins get sucked off so much? Seriously. That team consistently has AT LEAST 3 prime time appearances every god damn season. They don't have the fan base, they don't have the wins, and they don't have any stars. Whiskey tango foxtrot |
Dallas was good at the right times. When the Baby Boomers got into sports and when Gen Y started. Perfect storm.

Another question mark: Notre Dame football. Did they really have that many fans when they were good for decades?
The way TV Networks broadcast that school, you'd think it was still the 1980s for crying out loud. Sorry, Pest, but you can't deny it's been a long freakin time since your school was relevant. |
