Coming to Phoenix

I've got to come to Phoenix in a couple of weeks for a conference. We're staying at the downtown Hyatt Regency. Any suggestions for eating and drinking nearby?

Phobia 10-14-2013 01:28 PM

You should definitely eat and drink nearby.

Avoid Nogales if possible.

Being that you are a beer guy, Angels trumpet downtown is a must visit. 40 (I think) taps. Sidebar at 7th Ave and McDowell is a cool spot for late night drinks. The lost leaf, The Duce And Hanny's are cool too and all downtown. There are a number of other good spots but further from downtown.

For food, St Francis is excellent but a little north of downtown. Tuck shop, also north of downtown is good comfort food.

It's top notch. Don't be alarmed if you see Charles Barkley there.
Hit the Barrio Cafe for some good Mexican...

vailpass 10-14-2013 01:39 PM

And for some good beers, George& Dragon is a good spot...100 beers.

vailpass 10-14-2013 01:42 PM

And if you want some lesbian diversity check out Ain't Nobody's Business.
Indian Fry House is a good shift.

vailpass 10-14-2013 01:44 PM

Last one...Honeybears on Central is close to you, not bad bbq...

Nice! Should be really awesome weather here in a few weeks. End of October is just beautiful temps and sun. Enjoy!

You will be close to Chase Field and US Airways Center. Ton's of places around there. Hard Rock is pretty Latino so you may or may not want that.

Alice Cooper's bar is down there. The T.G.I. Friday's is in Chase Field and overlooks the field. Might have to call ahead for outside seating. It's cool for being TGI Fridays

Burger King just north of you.

Thanks man. I want to eat/drink at places that I can't find elsewhere to TGIF and Hard Rock are out.

You might be able to walk to this place; cannot be missed. Phoenicians queue up for this daily:

I hang here often: http://copperblueslive.com/. Good enough food. Stage above bar with live entertainment. Indoor, outdoor seating. Go outdoors.

Standup Live (http://standuplive.com/) right next to it in a pretty cool area of downtown. Cool bowling too but an expensive game. Expensive as ****.

When in Rome: http://www.carolinasmex.com/. This should be on everyone's bucket list.

majerles.com‎, Dan Majerles joint, might peak your interest. One block down from you.

If want to venture out of down town, head south on the 10 just a bit to here: www.rustlersrooste.com. Meat. And nice city/valley views.

You've got the Compass Room right there at the Hyatt. Pricey. A nightcap at the lounge is nice.

Do NOT listen to anyone who recommends Macayo's. Tell me you understand. LOL

Head up my way and we can hang here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/amys-baking-company-scottsdale.

Don't know if you have Tilted Kilts out there. That's by the arena as well. I go for the staff...

Suns/Trailblazers on the 30th at US West Arena

Might be a Coyotes game but that is waaaaay the **** out of your way.

Direckshun 10-14-2013 08:06 PM

I'd recommend you look up my "I'm going to Phoenix" thread back in July, but nobody gave me any ****ing advice in that thread.

Marty Mac Ver 2.0 10-14-2013 08:35 PM

Burger King was shut down by Maricopa County Health Dept.

Carolina's for Mexican (12th Street and Mohave --- about 10 min or less from your hotel via cab....it's not glamorous but its pretty good).

Corporate HQ/Training Center for the Tilted Kilt is 5 minute walk from your hotel

Tons of great restaurants in the Washington Square area, which is a 5-min walk.

http://www.downtownphoenix.com/restaurants

If you want to venture out:

Roaring Fork for grilled stuff...(Scottsdale, about 25-min ride from your hotel depending on traffic).

Hula's Modern Tiki: Restaurant in Central Phoenix (hulasmoderntiki.com probably 5-10 min trip from your hotel).

NewChief 10-14-2013 08:38 PM

Question: I was in Scottsdale for Cards vs Chiefs when Trent played. We went to some huge BBQ place out in the desert. Sat at picnic tables they had a big stage with a band. Rattlesnakes in cages inside the place. Always wanted to know what that places was (though we won't be going). It was a really pretty place to chow on some food, though kind of touristy.

Hula's! Thank you. I couldn't remember the name. Best Edamame ever. Full disclosure: It's a popular homosexual hangout. I go with my fiance... :'] And still get looked over. No big. Just don't dress like a Village People.

I 2nd Roaring Fork. I live one block away. Get to Scottsdale and choices abound.

Marty Mac Ver 2.0 10-14-2013 08:45 PM

Hula's is for homos? Guess I will stop ordering pink drinks with umbrellas

Might be Greaswood Flats. Open fires too?

In Northern Scottsdale: http://www.pppatio.com/. Wear a tie in there and they will cut it off an pin it to the wall. There are THOUSANDS of cut off ties hanging in there. Outdoor meat grilling, picnic tables to eat. Live gunfights. Kinda cool. Actually, this is probably where you were before if it was touristy. Greasewood is pretty hard core country folk.

vailpass 10-14-2013 08:50 PM

Rhythm Room if you want some good blues/soul music and dancing.

Yeah. I think that was it. Maybe it was ties, not rattlesnakes. I just remember the views were gorgeous as we sat out and etched the sun go down then hung through the night drinking in the beautiful weather. I was living in Colorado at the time, and it was absolutely freezing back there. So it was awesome to be able to experience that weather.

Not that long ago, that used to be a 1/2 hour trip out of town. Now it's part of town. Was so much better before. The stars man. The star's.

Yup. It's a dump but a lot of fun. Get there on old school jazz night and it's like stepping into a speakeasy. Many people dress the part.

If you want to try something different, try Chino Bandido where they combine Chinese and Mexican. It's been over a decade since I've been there and it's a hole in the wall type place, but I have fond (possibly nostalgia fueled) memories.

I lived with a skank for a while and she worked there. Sounds like a strange combination but it is delicious. The one I know of is up off 17 and Greenway, or in that general vacinity. If going up there, I also recommend http://pappadeaux.com/location/?id=36. No real conversations can be had here. Noisy. I hosted a business lunch here and it was a waste of time. Great food. The skank then worked for Hooter's, where she developed quite the coke habit. Got canned and kicked out of my door. Sweet memories.

NewChief 10-25-2013 09:50 PM

Tried Angel's Trumpet Ale House (between the good beer, fine design aesthetic and metal vibe, I think this would be Reaper's paradise) and loved it. We were going to eat somewhere else, but were enjoying ourselves so much that we just ate there

Did lunch at Pizzeria Bianco. Really excellent and great atmosphere. Kind of reminded me of Pizzeria Oceana in Florida.

Hit Cafe Barrio for supper. Holy shit. Amazing.

So far, everything has been amazing, and I'm very impressed with downtown PHX. Went into lawless denim tonight and had good convo with the owners. Very cool place that you all should check out if you haven't.

My coworker has been blown away by the places I've recommended, so nice job. CP brain trust comes through again.

:thumb: you did well. Bianco is the best pizza in town. Cafe Barrio is unique, I always take guests there.
Hopefully you can work in LoLo's Chicken and Waffles. Enjoy your stay.

Salsitas next to the fabulous Flamingo Inn on Van Buren.

Lolo's is tomorrow night. I'm just sad to not get any fry bread tacos in. Just don't think we can fit them in unless there's somewhere really close for lunch tomorrow. Indian fry house is a little far. We present right after lunch, so we are on a time crunch then.

Indian Fry House is the one to miss if you are going to miss any of them, it's a hole in the wall but different. Enjoy the soul food, break a leg on your presentation.
You hit at the perfect time weather wise.

Good point. The avenue side is shadier than the street side in general so I'll go west.

eDave 10-25-2013 11:13 PM

Pffft. I can walk down Van Buren in a suit and tie, any time, and don't worry about a thing. Shit negro, if I want to shell out $20 I can get 4 BJ's along the way. It ain't nothing.

Can't say that about the Paseo. BJ' might be cheaper.

there's a zombie walk down town sat with a beer garden they usually have food trucks at such places
maybe a fry bread truck will show up

Tosh.o is at Stand Up Live this weekend and we debated spring for tix. Marjorie's has been discussed because it's so close. Also really liked look of Copper Bar, but we were tapped for night. I really like that area down by Stand up, though. That's where Lawless Denim is. Went to the CVS there and got beer for the hotel room.

Yeah it's relatively new and a decent set up.
