If you could through a little prayer my son's way

He's been sick for a week and tonight they admitted him to the hospital because his oxygen intake was only 82%. They've done xrays, bloodwork, flu swabs and still can't figure it out.

Hate for him to have to spend Christmas in here.

82% wtf? Wow My son has asthma and seeing his oxygen at 87% is wretched......Prayers on the way man. Are you sure it's 82%? Maybe 92%? That is critically low...

Wow, is it possible he has severe acute asthma? Let me just say i've been there, at this time of year...many times....It's heart wrenching man...

Lowest my son was ever at was 87% and he was barely hanging on at that level..I can't even imagine 82......eeek

How old is he?

J Diddy 12-23-2012 11:09 PM

10, never been to a hospital before this past week. He's scared out of his mind. They can't figure out what is up. They have him on steroids, antibiotics, breathing treatments, etc.

So no asthma and no Pneumonia either? My son is on a maintenance dosage of steroids and we have the nebulizer at home for treatments..I hope you are at Childrens Mercy, they really know their stuff.

10. I knew he was sick and took him to the doc on tues. They gave him antibiotics and by thursday he was feeling better. I took him to the exes for the weekend. I picked him up tonight and he was coughing and damn near fainting. I don't know what happened between know and then, but the second they checked him they rushed him back into the er and performed a god awful amount of tests (wouldn't be complete without sticking him once in each arm to draw blood). Now it's looking up and is risen to 97% (on oxygen) after 6 hours of work. I hope that it continues that way.

Ace Gunner 12-23-2012 11:18 PM

could be pneumonia. give the lil man a hug and I'm sure he's in good hands at the hospital

Via Christi in Pittsburg

At this point it is still unknown what is causing it. They don't think there's an abnormal amount of mucus, but he does seem to be responding well to what they are doing.

hmmm, Good to hear it's at 97%. Once he can achieve 97% on his own they will discharge him. Possible he had an allergic reaction to something he was inhaling or ate.....Keep us updated man.

I can empathize with breathing problems. Not breathing takes a toll on you physically and mentally if it is prolonged.

The most scared I've ever been has been during an asthma attack. I was working really hard to get some air and it was getting worse. I've been in Auto accidents farm accidents hurt myself pretty bad, none of it was as scary as losing ground to an asthma attack.

Prayers sent.

I've got one, that any other resp therapist won't answer. Where can I buy one of those finger sensors that measures your oxygen level? I've seen portable versions used at places like Walgreens but no one seems to sell them..

A private citizen can't a pulse ox legally in America. They are illegal to sell to private citizens. Most people get them from Mexico off the internet.

But, the problem with those are knock offs and their reliability is suspect.

Hemoglobin is the boats that carry oxygen around to your bodies cells and tissues. All the pulse ox is doing is reading how full those boats are. As long as they correctly send out the waves, they knockoffs should be fine.

As far as why..... Doctors don't want patients self medicating. If we get unreliable readings that don't match the physical signs we can get an ABG, the blood tells the truth.

I think they should be available for purchase.

I was wondering why I was always greeted with a you can't get one of these, EVER talks when I asked about them. Any idea why they are illegal? I would love to have one around the house to tell when my son is approaching the yellow/red zone.

Just google "pulse oximeter" and you should be able to find lots of options online.

I don't know if this is right or not. I bought one a few years ago and after a quick check it looks like they are still available through many vendors online including amazon.com. I see no sign that they are banned from sale in the US. If there is a sales ban here, it's completely ineffective.

Don't know why you think this; here's a link to Walgreen's.

http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/cho...064149-product

My son has CP and we use ours all the time...very reliable. Having said that we can often get caught up in "numbers". Docs tell us all the time to go by how our son is looking and acting and to not sweat the numbers so much.

J Diddy 12-24-2012 11:49 AM

Another day of xrays, blood tests, steroids, antibiotics, breathing treatments, and other assorted medication. Basically he's pushing 3 liters (I believe that's the standard measure) of air and is maintaining a 91% percent average. Tragedy is I don't know what the hell that means short of his blood has less oxygen in it than it should have. He's at the minimum going to be spending another night and I wouldn't be surprised if he's spending Christmas night too.

He's incredibly bummed and I'm doing all I can to keep his spirits up, but I'm failing miserably. There's only so much happy conversation that a guy can come up with that can compete with spending Christmas in the hospital.

KurtCobain 12-24-2012 11:51 AM
