Favorite documentaries?

The History channel website was having a good clearence sale the other day, so I ordered a couple dvd's. Last Stand of the 300, Battle of Thermopylae, and Heroes of the Holocaust. I watched Last Stand of the 300 earlier and it was very impressive. It went into detail of everything that lead up to the battle and what happened during and after. There was a lot that I didn't know about. If you are into Greek battles or Persian military history I highly recommend this documentary. It discussed King Leonidas life, Xerxes life, the sea battle that took place during the battle and what took place before a boy could become a man.

What are your favorite documentaries or recommended documentaries?

I've seen the one you speak of, great documentary. I've been a fan ever since "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". Saw the movie first then read the book second. Both great in their own way, respectively.

That's a great movie, really a work of art. It's just SO chaotic. I imagine his writing is the same way, anyone who's read a lot of his have a recommendation on what I should read first?

I liked Bill Murray's comment to Depp about snapping back into his personality for the rest of your life once you take it on. I can totally understand that, he had such a great perspective.

I'd recommend reading "Fear and Loathing". I really enjoyed it, he has a visionary way words. I think Terry Gillaim did a great job bringing it to the screen. I like Terry, he's directed some good movies.

I've been thinking about picking up "The Rum Diary" another novel he wrote.

As Buck mentioned, Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles is very good. They do a good job of framing the entire documentary as a detective case that they're attempting to solve, complete with timelines, suspects, locations, etc. And the subject matter is trippy enough to keep it all interesting.

Who Is Harry Nilsson (And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him)? is a good one. I'd heard of the guy before but didn't know much about him. It was incredible how many songs I recognized during the film for only vaguely being aware of the guy. Here's a wiki description:

Quote:

David Leaf and John Scheinfeld interviewed close to three dozen of Nilsson's friends, colleagues and extended family, who all shared their memories of Harry Nilsson, his music and how it affected them. This was put together in a documentary where we follow Harry Nilsson from childhood to death, enjoying the highs and lows along with him, from Grammy wins through divorce and substance abuse.

The film features original interviews with well-known friends and acquaintances of Nilsson, including Perry Botkin, Jr., Micky Dolenz, Terry Gilliam, Mark Hudson, Eric Idle, Al Kooper, Randy Newman, Yoko Ono, Van Dyke Parks, Richard Perry, Jimmy Webb, Paul Williams, Robin Williams, Brian Wilson and The Smothers Brothers. Also included are interviews with Nilsson's family, including his wives and children. Perhaps the most notable absence in the film is Ringo Starr, who does not feel comfortable talking about three people in person: John Lennon, George Harrison and Harry Nilsson. Another notable absence in the film is arranger-composer George Tipton, who worked closely with Nilsson on nearly all of his early RCA recordings - they reportedly had an unexplained and permanent falling-out, and Tipton refused to be interviewed for the film.

A Toynbee Tile has appeared in downtown KC. It's at 12th & Main, in the crosswalk (west side of the intersection).

The main block of text says:
HOUSE OF HADES
ONE MAN VERSUS
AMERICAN MEDIA
IN SOCIETY 2011
Above and below it in smaller text is: WHO WILL PAY FOR ALL THEY HAVE DONE?

I'm sure it's just a copycat, but it's still cool! I'll post a picture later when I have some time.

Dude is such a good player too...all of those old school arcade players are. Back when games took a shit ton of skill.

I'm STILL trying to crack DK...wish I was half as good as Mitchell, Wiebe, or Hank Chien.

Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles I'm not sure why but this one just hooked me. If I had to recommend only one it'd be this one. It starts slow and you really don't care at first but then it builds and sucks you in.

Best Worst Movie Just wow. At times you just feel uncomfortable knowing the fail train is running on time...

The Wild and Wonderful Whites Imagine having a one night stand and knocking up someone in this insane family.

I don't have to...

Shut Up Little Man! If you liked Resurrect Dead you'll like this. Most people will probably like this more. Stranger than fiction for sure...

I liked both of those. High Score is a pretty good doc about Bill Carlton going after the 80M score on missile command. Special when Lit is a decent doc about pinball history and players. I liked the doc, TILT: The Battle to Save Pinball, a lot more. Tilt is a short doc about Williams Pinball and the last Pinball table they designed. The Perfect Fraudman is an attempted documentary by Dwayne Richard. It is about all the dirt on Twin Galaxies and King of Kong. Most of it is rendered moot since Walter Day doesn't own Twin Galaxies anymore. There is a doc called The Video Craze (where were you in '82?) that is in the can but hasn't been released yet.
