Euro 2012

Don't feel like finding the other thread.

Won't post the results in the OP in case people don't want to be spoiled.

Buck 06-09-2012 10:40 AM

So I went on ESPN.com and they don't have this score, but I woke up at like 3 AM and Russia was playing the Czechs and it was 4-1 Russia...

Denmark is surprisingly up on the Netherlands 1-0 in the 39th minute.

Germany plays Portugal later today.

Buck 06-09-2012 10:42 AM

Okay, yesterday's results are Poland/Greece tied 1-1. Russia beat Czech Republic 4-1.

the Talking Can 06-09-2012 10:53 AM

good game right now

It is but...it's not that big of upset as people keep making it out to be. The Danes are good as hell. They are ranked 9th in the world.

KC_Connection 06-09-2012 12:11 PM

The Dutch are such chokers.

Jerm 06-09-2012 12:15 PM

Problem is the Dutch don't play as a unit...group of superstars that don't combine all that well.

Germany/Portugal should be a cracker...

Yeah, but the Dutch are at least top 5. They are a much better team. Supposed to be anyways.

Perhaps, although I don't think I imagined that 45-15-5 game on 73% shooting in an elimination game.

Trevo_410 06-09-2012 01:01 PM

Good game by Germany. Not great but competent but Portugal looked more dangerous. Anyway onwards and upwards. Lets kick Holland out of the championship next.

MMXcalibur 06-09-2012 06:41 PM

I'm rooting for Ireland, simply for the reason that they got boned in World Cup qualifying for 2010.

Demonpenz 06-09-2012 07:39 PM

Ireland Ireland Ireland

Buck 06-10-2012 10:23 AM

Italy just barely missed a goal. They seem to be putting a lot of pressure on Spain. Haven't seen Spain have many chances so far.

Buck 06-10-2012 11:17 AM

Italy 1 - 0 Spain ; 61st minute.

Final 1-1.

WilliamTheIrish 06-10-2012 02:05 PM

The Eire in the last 10 minutes of the first half played the "trying not to lose" defensive play. Sitting back allowing attacks all over the penalty area, clearing the ball and letting the Croats attack again. And giving up a goal in the first 3 minutes of the first half, the last 2 minutes of the 1st half and the first 3 minutes of the 2nd half has effectively harshed my day.

JoeyChuckles 06-10-2012 02:18 PM

It would've been cool to see Ireland win. It doesn't look like that is going to happen.

WilliamTheIrish 06-10-2012 02:22 PM

Ireland deserves to lose. They are perfectly capable of competing and winning this game. Losing like this is just disheartening. But, that's what they've always done. I'm not exactly surprised.

the Talking Can 06-13-2012 10:42 AM

portugal/denmark is excellent so far

2-1 portugal in the first half

the Talking Can 06-13-2012 11:39 AM

ronaldo missed two easy scoring opportunities

and now denmark scores

2-2

the Talking Can 06-13-2012 11:45 AM

3-2 portugal 86th minute

Buck 06-24-2012 12:24 PM

Thread hasn't been bumped in a hot minute.

We've got Portugal - Spain and Germany - England/Italy.

England/Italy kicks off in 20 min on ESPN.

Probably the best sport on today if you're a Padres fan.

WilliamTheIrish 06-24-2012 02:12 PM

Very entertaining game even though there hasn't been a goal. Yet.

Shag 06-24-2012 02:21 PM

England's style of only attacking on a counter is kind of boring. Italy has missed some great opportunities so far...

WilliamTheIrish 06-24-2012 02:45 PM

England created two primo opportunities early on. Not as many as the olive oilers, but really good chances.

Buck 06-24-2012 02:46 PM

If that bicycle kick would have gone in in the 92nd minute, it would have been the defining moment of Rooney's career.

Buck 06-24-2012 02:46 PM

OMG, Pirlo just missed Balotelli.

WilliamTheIrish 06-24-2012 02:48 PM

Oh... Rooney you f! Shoot that or cross it. )Right before that missed pass to Balotelli.

RunKC 06-24-2012 02:58 PM

Italy's offense sucks. They've had several chances to score but **** up every one of them.

Buck 06-24-2012 03:13 PM

Looks like PKs

Shag 06-24-2012 03:15 PM

lol, 36 shots vs 9. England only had one shot on net...

Buck 06-24-2012 03:16 PM

England sucks at PKs

jd1020 06-24-2012 03:21 PM

If England wins this they are going to get dominated by Germany.

Buck 06-24-2012 03:22 PM

DJay23 06-24-2012 03:24 PM

Joe Hart's kind of cool. I like how he made a big scary monster face before that one PK.

WilliamTheIrish 06-24-2012 03:24 PM

C'mon Joe Hart...

Buck 06-24-2012 03:24 PM

And Italy looks like they have it.

WilliamTheIrish 06-24-2012 03:25 PM

Goddammit!

Well, Italy deserved the win. They were better.

It's something I've watched Italy do for decades. I've always disliked that team. Except in 82 when they beat Brazil in group play. What a great WC that was. Paolo Rossi with a hat trick in that game. Was lucky I got to watch it on Univision (although it was called Spanish International Network then)

Have you ever seen the documentary of that WC? It's narrated by Sean Connery. There were some great players in that WC.

I get the soccer thing, I really do, not my cup of tea, but it's EURO SOCCER. MLS? Fine, no problem. Obviously golf, tennis, WNBA, Nascar all are on a AMERICAN TV network like ESPN, because they are AMERICAN LEAGUES OR PLAYERS. Just very odd to me, I mean I love basketball, but no way in hell am I going to watch some Euro League basketball game...and there are even many American born players playing over there.

I get your point, but the Euro cup is one of the biggest tournaments on earth. Soccer is more popular than all those others you named COMBINED. Soccer is becoming more and more popular in this country. One of the ways to help with that is for the premier sports network in America to play the tournament with some of the best in the world playing. Even with that a few things to contemplate about the Euro Cup on TV

1. A majority of the games were televised during the weekdays when not many people got to see it.

2. This is the closest thing we have to a dead season for sports with football, basketball, and to a point hockey all being off. Collegiate sports are also in a down time as well. All we really have as major sports right now are baseball and to a point MLS ans NASCAR. The Euro Cup did not take up a slot from any of these sports, so there is no real issues with it being on.

WilliamTheIrish 06-24-2012 08:05 PM

If you don't understand why the UEFA Cup is on ESPN then you're an idiot.

Buck 06-24-2012 08:08 PM

So, you just compared the championship game of a given sport...to the merchandising appeal of one sport...to the TV numbers (mid week and weekend) of a continental tournament (not the championship) of another sport.

There can be no different narrative emerging from ESPN's Euro 2012 vs. ESPN's NASCAR. Clearly, in the U.S., NASCAR beats Euro 2012 in viewer numbers.

If you want to research it further, be my guest.

As far as your soccer numbers, shit's looking good. Looks like our performance in WC 2010 has got our country more interested in soccer, whether it's MLS or International Competition.

True. The numbers are looking good.

The metrics for the MLS are really great except for TV ratings. They are not there yet and it will take time. Getting people to tune in when their team isn't playing as well as getting American soccer fans who don't currently watch their home grown soccer league is the next step.

I am gonna try to be in Brazil in '14 should be a blast.
