Best Sci-Fi Movies of the last 5 Years
So 2008-2012 only...I'm trying to find some that I haven't seen.
The best for me are District 9, Star Trek, and...I can't even think of a third film worthy of getting my top nod. |
Star Trek
Moon |
Yeah, I guess Moon would be my #3.

I was going to chip in with Moon.
|
If Moon is top ten, well then it hasn't been a good decade for sci fi.
|
Maybe Source Code, if you can consider it Sci Fi.

Having said that, I think we have to put Avatar and Prometheus on this list somewhere? Flame away....... |
Looper
|
Wall E
Inception |
Moon
Prometheus Sunshine (oops 2007) |

Children of Men came out in 2006. Too far back? How about The Road? Post-apocalyptic ... is that sci-fi enough? |
Dredd
Cloud Atlas |
Star Trek
Moon District 9 Inception Avatar |
I haven't seen or heard half of these movies besides Star Trek, Avatar and District 9.
|
Men in Black 3 - hardcore sci fi man
|
District 9 was one of the most boring films I ever saw.
|
Prometheus has to be on that list.
|
I thought District 9 sucked. Way overhyped. And **** Avatar.
Mine would be: Moon Star Trek Prometheus Inception Can't really think of a fifth |

Just make a sci-fi film and leave all of the hidden meanings about aparteid or immigration or whatever for another film. To the op, its pretty much just Trek and Moon for me, i might be missing one other but cant think of it. |

I liked District 9. I never saw Avatar. I doubt I ever will. Seems like the best thing anyone says about it is, "it looks great." So do fish tanks.
|

Tried to watch it twice and didnt get through it either time. |
was going to say Equilibrium......but that's a bit further than 2002.
SO... Inception Prometheus Not sure if "Priest" qualifies....but it was pretty good. |
Add me to the "didn't like District 9" list.
My list: Avatar Cloud Atlas Inception Looper Moon Prometheus Source Code Star Trek Watchmen X-Men: First Class Go back a couple of years and add: Children of Men Pan's Labyrinth Sunshine The Fountain A little loose in the genre selection, and not all of these are necessarily the best (or even good in a couple of cases) but rather movies I think everyone should see. I think there's a very real possibility that we'll see as many good to great science fiction movies on the big screen in 2013 as we've seen in the last 5 years combined. |

Definitely see Pan's Labyrinth. It's one of the best movies of any variety from the last decade.
The Fountain is a bit out there (it's Aronofsky, so that's sort of a given). People seem to either love it or hate it. I think it's sort of like Prometheus or Cloud Atlas in that it maybe misses the mark but there's still some really cool stuff in it. |

Guillermo del Toro is the shit. Not sure the movie really fits into sci-fi --- much more fantasy-horror. Either way, watch it.. And then watch The Devils Backbone. |
Another strong recommendation for Pan's Labyrinth. Perhaps the most brilliant and original movie I've ever seen.
And I should add Watchmen to my list as well. |
How about Tree of Life?

If we're going to allow comic book movies i would add several, but there is a difference between them to me.

I enjoyed Melancholia...for more reasons than Dunst's boobs even.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes kinda counts. Doing a search to jog my memory and saw this, never heard of it so just throwing it out there. Is It Just Me... Or Is Sunshine The Best Sci-fi Flick Of The Century? http://www.totalfilm.com/features/is...of-the-century http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunshine_%282007_film%29 |
Totally forgot Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Definitely goes on the list.

1. Moon
2. Looper 3. Sunshine 4. Inception 5. District 9 |
That one movie where this black dude is all alone in a city and these weirdos come out when it is dark and try to kill him.
He is like a bum plus he gets drunk a lot, this low rent can fly though. Then a pretty lady and her kid come and help him out because they feel sorry for him. They get out of that bad city and the movie is over. The end. |
Cowboys and Aliens.

Not really a movie - but Torchwood; Miracle Day. It's a British tv series that started out with Torchwood seasons 1 & 2 and continued with the best of the group in Torchwood; Children of Men. Probably not for everyone but it's one of my favorite si-fi series. Take it for what it's worth - I also love Lost Girl on the si-fi channel.

If I wasn't a fan of 2001: A Space Odyssey, I would have turned Tree of Life off pretty quickly. It's not for everyone, that's for sure. |

Also, add me to the list of "District 9" was meh. |
They are a little older and more in the dark fantasy genre (but people are including "Pan's Labyrinth" so figure it's okay) but I really liked "Night Watch" and the sequel "Day Watch". They are Russian films that came out in '04 and '06. Pretty bizarre but an entertaining ride.

didn't Lynch disassociate himself with that [movie which shall not be named]?
|
How come almost all of the space Sci-fi movies end the same? Big battle of my species versus yours. Same with Prometheus. Cool from beginning to middle but ending was same old crap of brainless chase scenes until everyone gets blown up.

And he can disassociate himself with or beg for forgiveness - I don't care. That's like Hitler apologizing for World War II. |

ROFL... Heres some stuff i dug up on IMDB about it. David Lynch (13 January 2006) : "Dune I didn't have final cut on. It's the only film I've made where I didn't have, I didn't technically have final cut on The Elephant Man but Mel Brooks gave it to me, and on Dune the film, I started selling out even in the script phase knowing I didn't have final cut, and I sold out, so it was a slow dying- the-death and a terrible terrible experience. I don't know how it happened, I trusted that it would work out but it was very naive and, the wrong move. In those days the maximum length they figured I could have is two hours and seventeen minutes, and that's what the film is, so they wouldn't lose a screening a day, so once again it's money talking and not for the film at all and so it was like compacted and it hurt it, it hurt it. There is no other version. There's more stuff, but even that is putrefied." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087182/trivia •Theatrical version is 137 minutes long; TV version seen both in syndication and on most cable networks, prepared under protest from (and eventually disowned by) director David Lynch, is approx. 176 minutes long (minus commercials) and features outtakes, additional footage, test close-up shots of certain actors, and even fabricated (i.e. "cheated") footage (made up of repeated stock footage from certain points in the film to make it appear that footage had been added--one reason why Lynch took his name off the credits of the TV version). The TV print credits Alan Smithee as director. Whereas the theatrical release features a brief introductory narration spoken by Princess Irulan, the TV version has a longer spoken introduction by an uncredited male narrator, with still paintings and drawings used to bring the viewer up to speed on the story. The TV version (which has been released on Japanese LaserDisc and overseas DVDs) has additional footage of the Fremen that lacks the blue color in their eyes, indicating that the scenes were cut before special f/x were added. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087182/alternateversions Whatever the case, it wouldnt shock me if someone tried rebooting this movie someday. |
I thought District 9 was really good up until the point where it broke out of the documentary format. Then it just kind of devolved into a mediocre sci-fi action flick with huge plot holes.
Moon is excellent, though. Sam Rockwell is amazing, and the soundtrack is great. |

Have to give another vote to Pandorum, but I liked Solaris which most people didn't. Have to heartily agree with Moon. This thread is making me realize we need more sci-fi movies! |

And it's been forever, but wasn't Duncan Idaho a mega badass in the book? I don't remember him being exactly that in the movie.
