Above Ground Pools
Any of you own an above ground pool? What are the pros and cons? Any models that you would recommend? Or any tips on owning one?
|
No.
Pro: Pool. Con: White trash pool. |

I've seen some setups that look pretty damn nice. As nice as an in-ground pool? No. But far from trash. |

I just went through this ... My wife picked out a 33 ft by 54. I wish I knew everything I know now before I started this process.
It looks great ... It's basically a baby lake with the size we went with. It doesn't look white trash at all. However, like I said it's a crazy process and expect them to trash your yard. I am still in the process of yard recovery. |

How is an above ground pool white trash?
|
Not worried about the white trash look because a) Got a friend who is a hell of builder to add on my deck b) another friend is a professional landscaper.

I feel like above ground is the way to go, a lot cheaper and if you wanted to get rid of it just remove it and throw down some grass.

most I've seen look white trash-ish. I have a buddy that has one with a killer synthetic deck around it, aluminum spindles, and a water feature. It looks totally kick ass.

The positive to above ground pool over inground is this.
-Houses resell easier without the pool. So when you want to resell, you can take it out. -Owning a pool is very expensive and time consuming. If you change your mind in a few years then you can take it out. I bought a house about 4 years ago with an above ground pool. I'm a single guy that works a ton so it takes a lot of my hard earned cash and free time. However, the benefits to owning the pool for me are worth it...in fact another one is coming over tomorrow ;-). I would have taken it out already but I have a very nice and large deck that's built halfway around it. I suppose when I redue my deck I will take the pool out. |

There's nothing wrong with an above ground pool, with or without a deck.

I built/installed above ground pools in Arkansas for a few years. To make them look worth a shit, you need to build a quality deck around them. If you do that, you can make them look really nice. The advantages are obviously cost and upkeep. Additionally, the uniform depth makes them nice as a "sport pool" for playing water volleyball and stuff like that.

I grew up with a pool. Fun some of the itme. Most of the time, my dad made me clean it out. Or repaint it, etc. Sucked. |

As a project manager of an in ground pool company, I indeed do not have an above ground pool.
Thinking of starting up a crew for installing them though. People call us all the time and I hate turning away easy work. |

I mean you really only need two guys on each crew. Good money for a day's work to supplement our real business. |

Remember the one key to maintaining a pool. If it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down.

You're going to spend over 20K though, unless it's really small. If it's really small, I just don't see the point in getting an in-ground pool. |

This is a picture of a buddy of mine's set-up, there's a lot you can't see but we built deck around 2/3 of it, and continued the wood rail around the other 1/3 and connected it to the existing two level deck. It's badass and not white trash at all.

Public pools are disgusting. Private ones are a lot of work. I will just go to the lake or the river.

Then when the lake water starts getting warm there is the Buffalo and the White Rivers to go get into and just float along. |

For someone who enjoys actually swimming, an above ground pool is too shallow. But some of those deck set ups do look nice.

Cos I'm not. Above ground pools are way more work than in-ground pools. |

There is no sane reason to check a 15,000+ gallon body of water every 4 hours unless it is being heavily used. |
Quote:
Larger pumps, filters, and pipes that give better circulation along with larger skimmers that would eliminate surface stuff. Larger bodies of water don't vary as quickly in terms of chemical composition. Chemicals in spas are the hardest to take care of. Large pools are actually much easier (but more expensive because you do use more chemicals). They're far more expensive, but a modern pool can be operated from your cell phone with the right stuff on it. |
$150 at Wal Mart! Hells Yea!

But it's not modern by any means, we have to keep it clean the old fashioned way. It can be a lot of damn work sometimes. |
yes. Pros: snakes have a more difficult time getting in.
cons: it's above ground |
What I've learned today is that ChiefsPlanet is a soup of indefatigable holier-than-thou idiocy on any topic imaginable.
