Dog advice
Just wondering if anyone has any advice on a dog issue me and the wife are having. I have a Jack Russel Terrier and he has just about lost his home. I have had him since he was a puppy but either he changes his behavior very quickly or I have to get rid of him.
The last 2 to 3 years he has started lifting his leg on things in the house (it has just gotten worse lately). This isn't because he isn't getting the opportunity to go outside, this is a behavior issue. He knows he isn't supposed to be doing it and he never does it in front of us. Today was the first time I had come close to catching him, I turned around for a few seconds and when I turned back around he had pissed on our couch. Needless to say he didn't have a good morning. This tends to happen a lot more in the winter months, probably because he can't get outside as much to play. We got him from a rescue and the lady who runs it had us try a belly band(I was not real keen on the idea and still am not), she said she uses them on all her rescued Jack Russels because they tend to have this issue a lot. I wish they would have told me that in the first place. It works for the most part but he continually pees in it when you have it on him so it just creates more issues. I think his little wee wee gets hot or something. I have had him for 7 years and really would hate to get rid of him but if I don't figure something out really fast the wife has told me it is either him or me. Anyone got any advice other then aids trees and antifreeze? |

You have a high energy dog that's pissed that you aren't exercising him enough. Buy him a treadmill.
|
Yep. Dude needs an outlet for physical and mental energy. Must walk him at least 30 minutes twice per day.
|
oh and watch the dog whisperer show...That's where I saw the same problem.
|
Interesting. Mine is 8, and she started pulling this shit in the last couple of months. She shit all over my bathroom floor last night, and rubbing her face in it doesn't work like it did when I potty trained her. She doesn't do it often, so I haven't worried about it much, but I'm going to have to research it now.

Pets are a lifetime commitment (to responsible pet owners anyway). If people can't handle pets, they shouldn't get them in the first place. Once you've gotten rid of your dog of 7 years, I implore you to never own another pet.
Can't stand irresponsible pet owners. |
Is he fixed? Being from a rescue, I assume he is, but if not that may be an easy way out - it stopped my chocolate lab from marking.
Is he crate trained? That may be a worthwhile start as well. Finally, exercise is pretty critical. A tired dog is always a good dog. |
The dog needs a good raping.

Hunting accident.

When I first got my dog. Whenever she pee'd in the house, I put her in a dog crate for a while.
She learned pretty quick, although it did take about a month, and I cant remember the last time she had an accident. Hitting the dog, scaring isn't going to help. With my dog, the crate worked perfectly. She hated that thing and I would strongly recommend trying that. But since you've had the dog a long time and just all of the sudden he's doing this. That tells me something else might be wrong. |

I don't really rub her face in it btw. I just put her nose right up to it and hold it there for a few seconds. I was really hoping for a troll opportunity and it never materialized.

And there is always the doggie anti-depressive route. If she's neurotic after play, it could be a straight up chemical imbalance (not impossible; JRTs are nuts anyway). |

You gotta run the little ****er till he can't move. Erry day.

rolled up news paper is what I have always used to get my jack's attention....

A friend of mine had the same issue with his JR. It's one reason I never got one. If you can't commit two or three hours to having him out running, then he needs a new home

Can't imagine giving up a pet I've had for such a long time. ****in asshole.
Maybe the little dude will find a more loving home, hopefully anyway. Just don't get another one, you'd just end giving that one up to. |
Yea, it would be like giving up a kid to me.... No way I can leave my dog

That may well be what she needs at this point. If you can't get her calm, she's going to become more and more neurotic. Doping the dog up is better than giving it away. |

Give a Jack a "small area of the yard to dig" LMAO A Jack will dig where ever he wants whenever he smells dirt he likes and before you can stop him the hole will be big enough to stick your head in. |
Break his ****ing paw that'll straighten him up! If not the goodfellas will take care of that "problem"

Notoriously difficult breed.

I have two chessies and I have no doubt they can dig circles around any JR. ..what they can't dig they take a big mouthful of dirt to remove and loosen it up. Forget a hole that is head size..... My dogs dig holes big and deep enough for a grizzly bear to make a den in. |
you do have a dog door right so it can go in and out freely? jeezus 3 years and its still not potty trained, you need to hit the dog when it does it and let him know man.
|
my friend has one...nooo way he was bugging the shit out of me all day.
|
just get a remote controlled shock collar. when you catch him lifting his leg, hit the little button on the remote. he's smart, he'll learn after a few times.
|
Next time get a female.

The dog is marking his territory.
You need to make him feel warm and fuzzy so he knows he doesn't have to worry. Or get a female dog. |
