Cuban says he would draft Brittney Griner. Could she play in the NBA?

Whats says Chiefsplanet.....Can a woman succeed in the NBA?

http://espn.go.com/dallas/nba/story/...llas-mavericks

LOS ANGELES -- Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban would be willing to give Baylor women's star Brittney Griner the opportunity to prove she could play in the NBA.

Cuban said he would consider selecting Griner, a 6-foot-8 three-time All-American and Big 12 player of the year, in the second round of the NBA draft. If the Mavs don't draft her, Cuban said he would have "no problem whatsoever" inviting Griner to try out for a spot on Dallas' summer league team.

If she is the best on the board, I will take her," Cuban said before the Mavs' Tuesday night game against the Los Angeles Lakers. "I've thought about it. I've thought about it already. Would I do it? Right now, I'd lean toward yes, just to see if she can do it. You never know unless you give somebody a chance, and it's not like the likelihood of any late-50s draft pick has a good chance of making it."

Griner dominated women's college basketball with her size and athleticism, scoring 3,283 points and blocking 748 shots in her career. She also had 18 dunks, including 11 her senior season.

Griner would love the opportunity. "I would hold my own! Lets do it." she wrote on Twitter on Tuesday night in response to Cuban.

A woman trying out for an NBA team is not unprecedented. Former UCLA star Ann Meyers tried out for the Indiana Pacers in 1979.

Cuban said it's difficult to evaluate whether Griner could play in the NBA because of the caliber of her competition, comparing it to scouting players from small schools. However, Cuban said he was absolutely serious about at least extending an invitation for Griner to try out this summer.

"She'd still have to make the team," Cuban said. "I'm not going to carry her just to carry her. I don't think, anyways. But I certainly wouldn't be opposed to giving her the opportunity."

Cuban acknowledged that Griner playing in the NBA's Las Vegas summer league would have tremendous marketing potential.

"It would, wouldn't it? See how she could do?" Cuban said. "That'd sell out a few games."

I think if someone has talent, they should be allowed to try out, regardless of anything.

lcarus 04-03-2013 08:57 AM

She could play with the men, yes. How good would she be in the NBA? I have no idea. She's a great athlete. Great basketball player.

Dante84 04-03-2013 08:59 AM

As a business move, its genius.

The publicity, advertising sales, ticket sales, jersey sales.... cash cow.

And all he has to do is let her be on a summer league team.

Bewbies 04-03-2013 08:59 AM

There are a lot of dumb things Cuban would do, this isn't one of them.

I don't see the harm in letting her try, but I have no doubt in my mind that she would have zero success. Not big enough to bang with the 4's and 5's, and would look foolish trying to play wing.

I considered doing it, but don't really feel like getting blasted for being an asshole.

But I'm with you. I'm not 100% convinced until I see her naked. In person, outside of the reach of photoshop.

Lzen 04-03-2013 09:03 AM

This would be a marketing/publicity stunt. Nothing more, nothing less. Griner would get destroyed by the real men. By all means, let's see this happen. :D

She as much as shot as I do. She would get destroyed. And set the shim movement back to where only transgenders only play sports in mother Russia.

Consistent1 04-03-2013 09:06 AM

I'm sure she could play pick-up games with guys, but the NBA? No way.

ndws 04-03-2013 09:08 AM

its like Eddie Gaedel, but not really.

cosmo20002 04-03-2013 09:14 AM

Is the NBA draft still 2 rounds? Then he ain't taking Griner in the draft.
Would he bring her in for a "try-out"? Sure, for the publicity.

No way in hell she could actually make the team. No way she's strong or fast enough for the NBA. Only possible role for a female in the NBA is if she was an absolutely dead-on 3-pt shooter they could use her in spot situations where they could get her a wide open shot.

CHENZ A! 04-03-2013 09:16 AM

She really can't jump for shit either. I mean, compared to men anyway.

I bet Charles Barkley's old fat ass could still beat her one on one.

Very few 2nd rounders in the NBA turn out to be anything anyways. So there would be very little risk involved.

Molitoth 04-03-2013 09:45 AM

Even if she fails, Cubans bank account would succeed.

Think of all the publicity that team would get.

Personally, I'd even be interested in watching it.

gblowfish 04-03-2013 09:48 AM

There's this thing called "The WNBA."
She should go dominate that first before thinking about trying the NBA.

patteeu 04-03-2013 09:48 AM

She could wash the uniforms.

donkhater 04-03-2013 09:55 AM

There was a discussion on this board a couple years back asking if Annika Sorenstam or Michelle Wie could compete on the Men's PGA tour. The answer is---absolutely not.

The physical differences in golf between men and women are pretty huge. Imagine the difference between men and women basketball players. It's likely she would perform well in some boys high school games. But against college men? Pros? Please child.

She could probably play on some lesser men's college teams, but not against major college players. I just watched some youtube video of her and it's a joke to even suggest that she could make it in the NBA.

Some people far underestimate the strength, speed and quickness of professional athletes. Even the ones that "suck" are better than 99% of humans. Even those totally ripped female Olympic track stars have no where near the strength of similar-sized male athlete.

suds79 04-03-2013 10:02 AM

Isn't she like only 6'6?

What she's going to play 2 guard in the NBA?

She's a post-up player. She'd be like Elton Brand without the thickness or strength.

She's listed as 6'8", but she's got the body type of a praying mantis. She reminds me of a shorter version of Missouri's Haley twins.

she would get straight up owned by bench players in the NBA. It's a smart publicity stunt by Cuban and she should at least get a chance I guess. But there's no way.

I agree, but...When you go from college to the pros what do we always hear them say? They get bigger, faster and stronger. She will not.

The guys in the NBA would dominate her, push her around and physically man handle her. Once they realize, especially if she made a play on somebody, that she was trying to take their money or a roster spot, these guys would show no mercy.

It would be embarrassing.

'Hamas' Jenkins 04-03-2013 07:52 PM

Jesus Christ, no. This is ridiculous.

She wouldn't even start on a DI team.

Cheryl Miller was the greatest female basketball player ever and she never once beat her brother in one on one once he was 13.

She's not quick enough or explosive enough.

Pablo 04-03-2013 08:03 PM

No only no, but **** no. The NBA is full of the 400 most elite athletes in the world.

Griner is a freak for being a female. She's not shit compared to the last guy off any NBA bench.

Cannibal 04-03-2013 08:05 PM

She's 6'-8", 208. She played center in college. She's obviously not going to play center or power forward in the NBA, because she's too small for those positions. Physically, in terms of height and weight, she would probably have to match up with small forwards. But even the small forwards would still outweigh her by 30lbs, yet they would blow by her off the dribble with complete ease. She would also get beat to death on the offensive end and rebounding the ball.

Brendan08901 04-03-2013 08:57 PM

I never got the people that view these things as some sort of "victory" for women's causes. If you let her play in the NBA, then you gotta let men play in the WNBA. Could you imagine the influx of men who never made it in the pros just joining the WNBA? Women wouldn't be able to compete in either league then.

hometeam 04-03-2013 09:13 PM

I dont see here beating out NBA caliber men for minutes in an NBA game.. I just dont see it.

NBA players would embarrass her if she even got a tryout. It wouldn't be pretty. I don't see why she would even want to do something like that.

I've pretty much lost a lot of respect for Cuban after these last 2 years. He breaks up a Championship team to free up money for Williams then misses his visit because he had to shoot Shark tank. Now this publicity stunt. No way this she male can play in the NBA. You couldn't be more obvious with your attention whoring.

Only major sport I see a woman playing could be baseball as a slap hitter (honestly surprised there arent any) or as a kicker in the NFL but it would hafta just be FGs cuz she would get demolished in special teams running down the field.

Ppl that think she can make it against the men have obviously not played against a supposed upper level womens bball team. When I was a freshman in HS we scrimmsged against the #4 ranked varsity girls bball team. Keep in mind we were fr and had TWO freshman teams. I expected them to beat us handily. They didnt.
