610sports: Donald Stevenson

http://media.610sports.com/a/7828421...stephenson.htm

*said he needs to know the playbook so he can play a lot faster -- said the NFL is a lot faster

*said he loves playing LT, but he is happy playing OG or RT, he would just like to play

*said he is fine playing both sides of the line, at OG or OT

*albert taught him to play at the NFL level and fells he can start at LT but is supportive of the two tackles

*said Reid's opener to the team was "we are going to score a lot of points this year"

*said they will use different blocking schemes and the offensive system is different

*talks about being chosen one spot before Wilson -- feels great responsibility

*he's a local grown talent -- said he's a chiefs fan first and puts the team first now that he is part of it

*talks about playing TE last season

cool interview. I liked this kid, stuck up for him during last pre season when he seemed to be the only bright spot against the Rams. I think he has good ability, could actually become a real mauler as a OG.

Pioli pick, and must be destroyed.

Imon Yourside 07-17-2013 08:50 PM

Hootie wouldn't like him, he doesn't tip.

IowaChiefs83 07-17-2013 08:53 PM

Unless Russel Wilson totally falls off and busts out I will always hate the pick of Donald Stephenson. No offense to the man himself.

O.city 07-17-2013 08:56 PM

Stephenson is likely the Rt next year and of the future

GloryDayz 07-17-2013 08:57 PM

If he doesn't juice, we don't need him.... This is 2013, it's juice or get the **** outta town!

With Andy Heck and Eugene Chung as offensive line coaches, I think that these guys are going to really get some solid schooling in terms of NFL technique and procedures. In addition, having a real quarterback will help immensely. (And Reid himself was an offensive line guy.)

Stephenson has the best skill set and athletic/physical ability of anyone on this line. He's absolutely prototype for the tackle position and, imo, if he stuck around for his senior season, he'd easily have been a first round selection. Pioli sucked dog nuts in terms of how he ran and managed the team, but I think he absolutely stole Justin Houston and Don Stephenson in the draft.

If Stephenson pays attention to the coaching he'll receive this season, he's got the potential to be an absolute monster.

Ace Gunner 07-17-2013 09:27 PM

I liked how he handled the interview too, seems like a smart, no nonsense hard worker.

Carl the janitor had nothing but good things to say about his attitude

No. "Carl the janitor" was a Piolism that ol' Scotty used all the time to define his draft strategy to the media.

ah, okay. so, you are still sulking about the wilson miss. scooter was an idiot when it came to all thing QB, too bad he stayed while haley was shown the door. I'm pretty sure haley would have curbstomped cassel and picked up a decent QB -- like wilson, perhaps.

It's not really a sulk. I was going for the obscure reference joke that some might get and some might not.

Pioli said when he did recruiting he liked to talk not only to the coaches but to the behind-the-scenes guys who have been working for the university in some fashion for years. This includes janitors, trainers, towel cleaners, and shitscrapers. He said because they've been around for so long, much longer than coaches, they often know more about the kinds of players that do well at the next level than do the coaches.

Ace Gunner 07-17-2013 10:06 PM

ha, well, that is a bittersweet story... which is probably your intent in telling it. I can appreciate that.

as much as the whole "DL/OL instead of a QB" issue has been discussed, I think the team will finally benefit from years of drafting the BFF's from early rounds. The Chiefs were so void of talent at those positions over recent years and it was necessary to invest high picks. But, like you, perhaps, I wished they had done a deal to grab RG3 last year.

Exactly. Reid has had some good things to say about him as well.

I don't know why ... we wouldn't of selected Russel Wilson if Stephenson didn't exist.

yep

Albert rides the tag, gets traded next year
Fisher to LT
Stephenson to RT

Fish 07-18-2013 10:04 AM

I still think he's going to be a good starter someday.

If you mean Albert gets traded for an end of 3rd compensatory pick (at best), then yes I totally agree.

So we drafted out LTOTF #1, trained him up on the right side his rookie year, while we gave our RTOTF some training on the left side his rookie year as a fill in, and maybe as a starter on the inside his soph year, and may net a late 3rd comp pick (in '15) for prior LT when he signs a dissappointing (to him) multi-year deal somewhere else next year. Wise move or wasted opportunity? Only time will tell. Only player I would have taken above Fish #1 was Dion Jordan, and only time will tell which would have been better.

maybe ... if other teams don't think Albert is worth trading for

They weren't exactly lining up to trade for our Hall of Fame left tackle this year.

Unless we tag him again, we can't trade him. And I seriously hope we don't bother to tag him again.

if we trade him then tagging him costs nothing

if tagging him means we can get a higher draft pick then we should do whatever it takes to improve our team

Pretty sure Albert is going to walk. If they couldn't trade him this year, they won't be able to next year. They might be able to get 3rd as a comp pick if he walks though.

Because Pioli loved him some Gus Cassel?

depends on how he plays

If he stays healthy and looks like a stud he might get more trade attention

i still think he is probably asking for too much cash

Naw, he was thinking they would pull off an epic trade for another fullback.

BradBigglestein 07-18-2013 05:28 PM

I was talking to a Chiefs fan the other day about Andy Reid and he said it might be a good idea to call up 610 in KC because Chiefs fans might be interested in hearing about an Eagles fan's take on Andy Reid.

I thought about it, but I don't know how sports radio is there in KC. Would hosts there be receptive to that? Would it not go over well? I'm just curious.

Thanks

no telling

most of the sport radio hosts don't really want to hear about anything from the fans. They pretty much hate them as a necessary evil.

depends on how well spoken and concise the caller is

even then you'll only get like 5-10 seconds to make your point
