QBOTF question from Iowanian(s)
Drew Tate?
What do you think? Should we start pimping him for the Chiefs? Agewise he seems just right to arrive about a year before Trent Green's decline. (And yes, I am a Cyclone fan, but much more so a Chiefs fan. So in cases like this I put aside the Cyclone/Hawkeye rivalry.) |
Haven't seen him play as of yet. I'll let you know after 11/20.
|
I have a friend, who works for the team, is friends with some players, and has lots of good inside juice.
He says Tate isn't the best QB on the team.....Manson is, by far(according to him)....... Tate has looked pretty good the past couple of weeks, but its pretty darn early to be pimping him for the NFL. He's got Drew Brees Potential. |
I think he's going to be good. I think he will have a monster year next season. I have no clue how he would fit into the NFL but I think he will need to be looked at in time, but not right now.
|
Whatever happened to that midget QB the Iowa fans were pimping a couple of years ago?
|
Brad Banks?
He's been signed by a couple of NFL teams as a FA, but I think he was cut again........he might be in the place where the national anthem is "oh cahnaduh, eh" |

Ah..IOWA fans. I didn't know Brad Banks was a midget. I knew Seneca Wallace was shorter...
|
My cat is smarter than Brad Banks
|
Sure why not.
IMO, the comparisons between Tate and Drew Brees are right on, except Tate's a better scrambler. As a Hawk fan, I'm friggin thrilled he has 2 1/2 years left at Iowa. Frankie, If ISU can't beat Baylor tomorrow, they should consider dropping down to 1-AA next season, as that appears to be the only teams they can beat. :p |

Tate looked good at the Spring game but has a lot of development to go. Biggest knock: he is too damn short for the NFL. It's good to see the Hawks with a starting QB who will be around for a couple of years instead of the merry-go-round of seniors we have had (not that it hasn't been succesful).

Of course, the Arizona State fans on the bb prolly think we're on drugs. |
Drew Tate has looked decent, and seems to show progress in each successive game, but he's a long way from the NFL. For one thing, he's only a sophmore. Any talent he has shown would only grow with more college experience.
I wasn't in here when Banks played, but I can't imagine anyone pimping him as a pro. He was the perfect example of a good college QB that had no shot in the pros. Seneca Wallace from ISU is the only short guy I can think of...Like Saul said, he's in Seattle and has looked good when he's been on the field. Given the chance I think he could be solid. Pretty much a black Doug Flutie. |
Aaron Rodger, JR. from California looks like he has all the tools to make it in the NFL. I think he would make a great QB of the future for the Chiefs.
|
I'm a Hawkeye fan and I don't remember pimping him for the NFL. I remember pimping him for Heisman because he had a monster Sr. year.
I haven't seen enough of Tate - there's plenty of time. |

Put me on the David Green bandwagon. Solid arm, good presence in the pocket, etc. With the right QB coach, he could do very well !

Who was the highly touted QB recruit with the big name?
Politics. I don't know.........I'm only going by this guy's opinion on that. Tate has looked better each week.......but in fairness.......he is using his #5 RB and the Line was battered early, and has lost like 8 players to the NFL in the past 2 seasons. |

That, or he knows more about football than one of the most respected young coaches in NCAA football. What does Kirk Ferentz know about QBs? He's only produced a Heisman finalist and one the top (statistical) QBs in Iowa's history in the last two years. |
I have to weigh in on several things here:
1) Manson is not a better QB than Tate. Roy, your friend is watching them in practice and judging them on physical ability. It's no doubt Manson is much closer to Brad Banks than Tate. But Tate has a mentality and the intangibles that Manson will never have. He re-wrote the record books in high school -- he's the most prolific passer in Texas 5A history. That's Texas. That's 5A. His dad is a coach -- he grew up learning football. How many sophomore QB's have 4 straight games where they hit AT LEAST EIGHT different receivers? 2) Everything he's done so far has really been with a makeshift offensive line and no running game. 2) Drew Tate is not too short to play in the NFL. He's 6'0". He's the same size as Drew Brees. 3) Seneca Wallace is the midget. He was also a Suck-lone, not a Hawk. Brad Banks was the Heisman runner-up, but I don't think any of us Hawk fans were pimping him for the NFL -- most of us, I believe, said he wasn't suited for the NFL, and we were right. |
JSP....
I'm not there, I don't know. He's not a coach, but not a jock washer either. I'll say that he also talked about what other players were saying, and it had alot to do with work ethic, attitude and respect of the other players......He said that Tate is a spoiled Prima Donna.........but funny enough.......Schlicker was worse. i don't know...I'm not at practice........I'm sure the coaches do what they think is best. I like Ferentz and think he's a good coach, and knows alot about player potential, particularly Oline. I mean.....we all know that NFL coaches like Vermeil never make personell decisions that the fans and other players might not agree with. I'm in the Tate= Drew Brees crowd. I'm not biatching. I just wish a RB could last more than 2 quarters without going down. The guy has been reliable before with insider stuff.............He knew Sapp was gone from IA before the news did.........and why. |
He looks like Jeff Garcia when playing to me.
|
I hadn't notice him walking bow legged with wrists limped down on the way to the line?
I keeeed I keeeeed. |

Drew Tate sucks
Put down the crack pipe about Drew Tate playing in the NFL. Get real. Seneca Wallace and Sage Rosenfels are both better NFL propects than anyone to ever come out of Iowa. Iowa fans always have blinders on. Never give any credit to anything but the Squawkeyes!!!!!!!!!

That sounds like the bitter fan of a team that hasn't won a conference game in almost 2 full years... |
BTW, Suck-lone Fan,
If you were to do a search, you'd find that almost EVERY Hawkeye fan on this board universally agreed that Seneca Wallace was a better NFL prospect than Brad Banks. |
ISU vs. Iowa
What is Kirk Ferentz's record against ISU? Just wondering. Two years ago Iowa's lone loss was to a "lowly" ISU team. I know ISU is not very good, but I just get tired of all the Hawkeye BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
Oh yeah, Iowa sucks. The lot of your colleges. Hawkeyes and Cyclones, both of em.
Just thought i'd add that. |
Keep f'ing doubting Grinnell!

As for Kirk Ferentz' record against ISU, give him a couple more years. It'll be ANOTHER 20 years before they win again... |

Well Tate certainly didn't do much to make a case for the pros today. Granted Iowa's running game is suffering by having to play the fifth string RB due to injury, but Tate looked pretty bad today. He had no touch on the ball and made some pretty poor decisions. Props to Iowa's D for shutting PSU out, because our O certainly wasn't getting it done.

And don't forget, it was at Happy Valley. No PSU is not what they used to be, but regardless 110,000 fans are LOUD. |
