My family and I went to Disneyland for Thanksgiving and this ride was a hoot! Has anyone here been on it? I think I heard they have one at Disneyworld thats even taller.

In case you've never heard of it it's a ride where you get in an elevator that takes you up 13 stories before dropping faster than gravity.. It was dang fun! The California screaming coaster was good too.
We have NO good coasters in this state. :(

Cool hope you had a good trip.

Joe Seahawk 11-30-2004 10:53 PM

It was a blast. I have boys 11, 12 that like me, have never been to Disneyland before. We had an absolute blast!

Hope your Thanksgiving was good too.

We had a simple dinner here at the house with lil momma's dad and sister. To tell you the truth it was nice to just chill for a bit.

Joe Seahawk 11-30-2004 11:07 PM

Excellent, It's definitely nice to just chill too. Maybe someday they can put a halfway decent game on TV on Thanksgiving.. :spock:

Chiefnj 11-30-2004 11:07 PM

I was on the one in Orlando recently. Lots of fun. It was 13 stories (well the last drop seemed to be). The Tower of Terror and a new space ride at Epcot were the most exciting.

Get rid of this Lions/Cowboys BS. A good game would have been nice.

Phobia 11-30-2004 11:56 PM

I took my 11 & 12 year old girls to Orlando 5 years ago. They were each just barely tall enough to ride every single ride. I couldn't keep 'em off this one.

ChiefsCountry 12-01-2004 12:41 AM

Awesome ride, MGM Studios in Orlando is cool to do at night which made this ride even better.

David. 12-01-2004 01:54 AM

I loved Disney Land. Magic Mountain was badass too.

No, I don't think he did.

If you dropped an unattached, non-powered carriage from the top and rode the ride from the top, the ride would reach the bottom more quickly.

A gravity assisted freefall tops out just over 100 MPH.

I was okay after the ride. I was a bit concerned after strapping in and noticed that they have airplane barf bags attached to the console of the ride. By the end of the ride I felt the beginnings of motion sickness.

Predarat 12-01-2004 10:02 AM

Yes-I rode the one in Orlando-It was awesome! But what was even better was the Rockin Roller Coaster. That was great! Space Mountain was more of a bust than Blackledge though. All the hype I heard about it and it was slow and it jis basicially one of the most over rated rides I have ever rode. It was like an indoor zambeezee zinger!

HC_Chief 12-01-2004 10:07 AM

Tower of Terror in Orlando (Disneyworld MGM) is awesome! The mrs and I went there a couple of years ago in October... the park was pretty much empty (compared to the rest of the year). We got to ride it consecutively until we tired of it :thumb:

Rockin' Rollercoaster (right across from ToT) was also excellent.

The dino ride at Animal Kingdom is out-frigging-standing (warning: will scare the shit out of kids under 10)

Universal is okay, but Islands of Adventure is the shiznit!! Best asmusement park I've ever been to :D

ck_IN 12-01-2004 10:07 AM

I went to MGM in Orlando a few years ago. This ride was the best part of it. A really great ride with lots of atmosphere from the attendents.

My fav though is Universal. They have the best rides!

Back to the Future ride was awesome, I thought.

KCWolfman 12-01-2004 10:12 AM

I went to the DisneyWorld one the year it was open. It was a lot of fun, but I still prefer Universal. With all the extra stuff around, I never felt like I had to wait very long in a line.

chief husker 12-01-2004 10:27 AM

Mrs. Husker still makes fun of the look on my face during the Terror ride. Almost took five minutes for my fingers to unclench. Enjoy.

ck_IN 12-01-2004 11:43 AM

Back to the Future ride was awesome, I thought.

That was my 2nd favourite. First fav was Men in Black. Actually first first fav was Shrek. Then again I'm 30+ going on 12.

A gravity assisted freefall tops out just over 100 MPH.

Near the surface of the Earth and in the absence of air resistance, objects in free fall will have a constant acceleration of about 9.8 m/s2. This is the value of acceleration due to gravity, which we commonly refer to as g.

All objects fall with the same downward acceleration: 9.8 m/s2

David. 12-01-2004 11:46 AM

this is true.

Oh yeah, I love that Back To The Future ride. My favorite is in Universal Studios: Islands of Adventure - Spiderman :thumb: The Hulk roller coaster in Islands of Adventure is way cool, too.

I also liked the California screamer coaster, a smooth and exhilarating ride. I cannot stand a coaster that jars you all over the place.

The Tower ride was under construction when I was there last year.

Yeah but like Phobes said, the terminal velocity is 126 mph, after that the acceleration rate goes down due to air resistance.

Lzen 12-01-2004 12:11 PM

Perhaps I misunderstood what Phil was trying to say.

If I'm not mistaken gravity is a force thus can't be measured with the same standards as the speed of a tangible object is measured. If it were measured by those standards it would be roughly the speed of light.

This is coming from memory of a physics class taken over 5 years ago that's why I replied with the :hmmm: smiley.

Mmmmkay.

Lzen 12-01-2004 12:25 PM

It took me a couple times of reading that to understand what you said, btw. :banghead:

But I think you missed what I said. I was saying an object's value of acceleration due to gravity. Not measuring gravity itself. ;)

KC Kings 12-01-2004 12:28 PM

I have watched the hour long new Disney show on Discovery HD several times, and that ride looks like a blast. My kids are only 4 and 2, so I can't wait until a couple of years from now until we can go.

Did you see the water show where they project part of the movie on the water and the water spray? That looks pretty cool on TV also.

I was just looking for an opening to discuss Joe saying "takes you up 13 stories before dropping faster than gravity..".

Your reply was the most suitable. :D

DaKCMan AP 12-01-2004 12:33 PM

I've been on the one at Disney World many times, most recently last week. It is taller than that. When it first came out it was excellent. You could feel the drop and your stomach would still be at the top of the building while your body drops down. THen they changed it. Tower of Terror 2. Tower of More Terror. Etc. Each time they have toyed with adding more drops and changing the length of drops. Both of the last 2 times I've been on it have been very disappointing. No longer do you "feel" the drop. Now it is not much more than a typical elevator ride :(

It used to be great...

Fantasmic? That show is still great. To get good seats (or any at all) you used to have to get there 2hrs in advance. Now if you get there 45min - 1hr in advance you should be alright. However, it used to be that while you waited they had staff in character come around and entertain (a cleaning lady, janitors, etc.). Now they just pipe music and make you sit there. Guess its all part of the cut-back scheme..

KCTitus 12-01-2004 12:35 PM

Faster than gravity would require an accelerant attached to the carriage.

If the carriage was in free-fall then it wouldnt be 'faster' than gravity.

Yeah, mission space can mess you up for a little bit. Sometimes I skip it just cause I don't feel like chancing it.

Also, the best ride in all of Disney is, IMO, Rockin Roller Coaster. The initial excelleration is amazing and riding a roller coaster with Aerosmith blasting is excellent.

We went to Orlando last March and went on all these. Loved the Tower of Terror.

I didn't have any motion problems with Mission:Space (be VERY sure to watch the screen the whole time, or you will get disoriented) but for some reason it gave me a really bad headache, so I only went on it once (my wife went on it three times and she isn't much of a ride person).

Rockin' Rollercoaster is awesome. Very smooth and fast. It freaked my wife out watching it peel out while we were in line, but she liked it, too.

They do accelerate the carriage ;)
(saw a show on the Travel Channel)

FYI: they are currently working on a zero-g 'simulator'. They were rather vague about it, but it sounds like they will have anti-gravity 'experience rides' in the near future (within the next 5 years). No wires, no flying.... they would not go into any more details than that. I CAN'T WAIT! :D

Heh, I was trying to say that. :thumb:

Joe Seahawk 12-01-2004 06:59 PM

I probably worded it wrong.. Here's a quote from the tower of terror website.

Thanks for the physics lesson.. :p

Quote:

That Sinking (Fast) Feeling: Guests aboard Tower of Terror fall faster than gravity. That is because the elevator car doesn't "free fall" -- the ride's mechanics actually "push" and "pull" it up and down.
