beer me is a closet fan of...
... Conway Twitty.
Who else do you think beer me likes in the deep recesses of his musical cerebellum? I'm betting that somewhere in his record collection, the vinyl is well-worn, but the cover betrays him. beer me is a charter member of the Kansas City Chapter of the Narvel Felts fan club. http://www.countrymusicnews.ca/newsimg/Narvel_Xmas.JPG |

Although she is not quite an "undiscovered talent" anymore, I still think she is the most under rated female country singer around. She does a duet with Brad Paisley now called "Whiskey Lullaby' that is absolutely a killer. mmaddog ******* |
Let's hear it for Beer Me!
Sounds like he has good taste in music. Don't forget Hank! (Sr of course) |

Conway Twitty...duh. John Denver...Who doesn't love "Rocky Mountain High"...and "I'm Sorry" is one of the all time great sad songs. Don Williams....the mellow man rocks my world..."Good 'ol Boys Like Me" and "If Hollywood Don't Need You" are all time favorites. The Oak Ridge Boys...I wanted to be one of them when I was a kid. I have most of their albums. Glen Campbell... "Gentle On My Mind" is pure poetry. James Taylor... Love "Fire & Rain" Gordon Lightfoot... "If You could Read My Mind" kicks Jim Croce... "Operater", "New York's Not MY Home", "I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song" are what song writting is all about I also have and listen quit freqently to... KISS....I have the entire collection minus only a few Alice Cooper... He's like me, a man of many and varied tastes. Marilyn Manson... a dark poet, a mad genius Metallica... God's of Thunder...(other than KISS) Van Halen Def Leppard Nickelback and so on... There's good music to be found almost everywhere.......just not on "new country" stations....or at the Opera. |

I love Glen Campbell for his picking skills...and Gentle on My Mind was the best example.... It was sad that we lost Croce when he was just starting to do some of his best work. His best song that never got the air play that it should have was "Photographs & Memories"...... BTW, there is some great music on the "new country" stations....you just have to wade thru all the pretend country that they are playing these days....while I am sure it's probably not what you like based on what you've put out there as typical of your favorites in Country music, I still say that Brooks & Dunn have some pretty good music....Alan Jackson is about as close as you will get to the "old" country sound.....and Alison Krauss can eat crackers in my bed anytime. mmaddog ******* |

Agree about Glen's playing skills... he is the man. I've often wondered how it would sound if he were playing Eddie Van Halen's guitar..... "Photographs and Memories"...... very nice. In the radio station I work at we have two stations...the pop/AC one that I work on...and our "hot country" sister station....so I do hear the music I just don't like it. I do agree though that B&D and AJ are pretty good. I was kind of generalizing with my comment about all new country. There is sooommmmmeee I don't mind. imo...Toby Keith and Tim McGraw are satan incarnate.... :) |

I saw Glen Campbell when he was down in Branson many years back....there was a part of the program where he showed off his skills with the guitar....I was very surprised, especially considering i am an Eddie Van Halen fan.... If you want to see some of what they are trying to slip into the "new country" mold, you should see the GAC channel and watch a program called "The Edge of Country"....I swear I thought I was watching The Heavy Metal Channel.....it's probably more like Country meets Rob Zombie. I must admit that I am a Toby Keith fan....although some of his music is not my cup of tea...when it comes to Tim McGraw, I would love to be him just 'cause he's married to Faith Hill. But, I will say that two of his latest songs are pretty good...."Live Like You're Dying" has a great message, and "Back When" is actually a pretty funny song and a commentary on how language has changed. mmaddog ******* |

"Cowgirl's Prayer" is probably my favorite, followed closely by "Roses in the Snow" and "Red Dirt Girl". I'll second the comment about "Edge of Country". While I wish they would play even more variety, it's a great way to see different americana bands. |

Ten Feet Away is awesome, as is Tell Lorrie I Love Her.
Although, I warn you, you probably shouldn't listen to this song list when you are drinking. It might cause you to need antidepressants. |
Lets hear from the Vern Gosden fans! "The voice" is just that.
"I used to craaaaaazy...over you nobody else could move me like you used to. I had to be outta my mind thinkin' I'd soon be over you... well I'm still crazy.................... but I'm not over you." and who can forget... "You don't know about lonellllleyyyyy, or how looong the niiights can be... till you've lived through the story, that's still livin' in me. and you don't know about saaaaaaaddddnneesssss, till you face liiiiiffffeee alone, You don't know about looooonlllleyy...... 'till it's chiseled in stone..." |
I can't believe Merle Haggard hasn't made this list yet! Willie Nelson is my all time favorite, but I guess he can't be on this list since he is still touring, and having great songs written about him. Toby Keiths, "Never Smoke Weed with Willie Again" is an instant classic.
Speaking of new country, does anybody else find it ironic that Tim McGraw has a hit country song about longing for the good old days, before he had to read, "street slang for dummies because they put pop in my country", while at the exact same time he has a R&B chart hit with his duet with Nelly. |

Speaking of pop in the country, how is Shania Twain even remotely considered a country artist? Her new song, "Party for Two" should be a top nominee for "Worst Song of the Year". |

On your second point, Tim McGraw can suck a big fatty. Much like Clint Black, once he got married to a hot wife he got all lovey and made nothing but complete crap and cowboy rap. His new song "Live Like You Were Dying" is the best thing that he has had since his freshman album. And Clint, what happend to drinkin' longnecks down at Ernie's Icehouse? |

But if you want to talk about hot female country singers you have start with Martina McBride, Alison Krauss, and LeeAnn Womack..... Quote:
While she may be a looker, her singing is for shat. mmaddog ******* |

Faith's music just doesn't do it for me. "Breathe" was okay, but after the eleventy billionth time I heard it, it kind of wore out it's welcome. Other than that, most of her music is a little too "adult contemporary" for my tastes. Quote:
My favorite female singer, as previously mentioned, is by far Emmylou Harris. I also like Patty Loveless, Dolly Parton's bluegrass albums, Loretta Lynn's latest work and Sweethearts of the Rodeo (though I think they have split up now). |
Quote:
I like Martina mostly because she has the kind of songs that are "heart-felt" songs.....I liked Alison Krauss long before she became the "in thing" and was nothing more than the front person for Union Station.....As for LeeAnn Womack, she is pretty much like Martina, but some of her early material was right on. I'm not much of an Emmy Lou Harris fan, but I love Patty Loveless. You'd be surprised how many people she has actually sang back-up for on hit songs that has never been advertised. She's been on several for Vince Gill, and has been acknowledged for it, but a lot of her duet work has gone unrecognized. If you like the Sweethearts of the Rodeo (which included Janice Gill, Vince's ex-wife that he left for Amy Grant), then you would probably like She-Daisy. mmaddog ******* |
Faith was a lot better before Tim McGraw... and Tim McGraw was a lot better before Faith Hill. Yes, they both still did more up-tempo "pop" country back then but ever since they got together, Faith has been trying desperately to find that cross-over smash and Tim's too busy singing one syrupy f***ing ballad after another to recognize that his audience was the good-timin', beer-drinkin', ballcap crowd.
They both suck. I liked Martina McBride's early stuff but agree that she's become a bit preachy these days. On top of that, country radio (I feel) has flooded the freakin' airwaves with "girl power country" so I've got a low tolerance for a lot of it anymore. I do still dig LeeAnn Womack though (even if she, too, was guilty of shooting for the cross-over). Shania Twain? Well... she's the devil. |
How 'bout "If You Got The Money Honey"
Lefty Frizzell |
She's hallarin about the front rent she'd be lucky to get the back rent
|
Sara Evans...yummy...easy on the eyes...voice as strong as Martina's...and doing a damn good job of picking songs lately.
Who knew this was a country music forum? Also funny is that I listen to KCMQ out of Columbia at work every day and I hardly hear a country song all week. |
If you want to hear some excellent country music, check out KHYI .

I sat down with the wife last night and we watched the Blake Shelton DVD I got her for Christmas.Thankfully it was only 5 songs, that's the closest I been to country since....heh,I can't remember.
|
I've never had a propensity for watching a concert on TV...especially one on VHS/DVD.
