Don Siegel brings his tough worldview and crisp, no-nonsense direction to this quintessential World War II drama of an undermanned American platoon in France holding off a German advance through sheer bluff and bravery. Steve McQueen is curt and surly as the insubordinate loner whose tactical skills and soldiering savvy make him indispensable to his new unit. His reputation precedes him, but commander Fess Parker is in no position to be choosy when he learns that his tired platoon will not be shipping home as rumored, but tossed into a ragged new offensive. Harry Guardino costars as the soulful Sarge; James Coburn is the slow-talking, forever-tinkering mechanic; Bobby Darin is the scavenger with a small fortune in trinkets; and Nick Adams is the Polish orphan and unit mascot. Bob Newhart makes his feature debut as a hopelessly lost typing clerk drafted into the undermanned unit and re-creates his nightclub shtick making phony phone calls near a Nazi listening post in the pillbox. Like Pork Chop Hill, this film is less a patriotic flag waver than a "war is hell" drama that frames the battle not in its tactical importance (which is negligible) but in its cost in human life. McQueen's taciturn performance as a ruthlessly effective soldier and Siegel's tough, lean direction make it a modest classic of the genre. --Sean Axmaker |
Force 10 from Navarone
The Guns of Navarone The Wild Geese The Bridge over the River Kwai The Dirty Dozen The Devil's Brigade Zulu |
For best Battle scene in a movie. It would be hard to top the nearly 40 minute Pearl harbor attack in "Pearl Harbor" The movie was mostly crap, but that battle scene was MONEY!
|
I'm not much on war movies for some reason. Appocolypse Now and Saving Private Ryan would have to be my two favorites.

I think you are thinking of Von Ryans Express. He highjacks a train with a bunch of POW's and they try to make it to the border. Count me in for Patton The Big Red One The Longest Day The Guns of Navarone I would normally put Blackhawk Down but the movie just makes me angry sometimes. And I admit I get choked up when they cant stop the bleeding in that guys leg and the last thing he says is to tell his wife and kids he did a good job or something like that. Kelly's Heroes is good for a laugh..."whats with all the negative waves Moriarty??" "This tank is JUNK!!! There is fuel leaking everywhere!!!" |
Patton
Dr. Strange Love Gettysburg Full Metal Jacket Saving Private Ryan I love the scene in Gettysburg when Col. Gamble tells Gen. Bufford that there are about 70 thousand men coming towards them and they hope to hold them off with their 2 thousand until Gen. Reynolds arives with the infantry. Gamble to Buford: "Damn sure glad the rain stopped, wouldn't want anything to slow down Reynolds" |
Hands down - Sgt York. Gary Cooper is one of my all timers
|
Gettysburg, Patton and To Hell and back. To Hell and back is about Audie Murphy. Audie Murphy is played by Audie Murphy.

1. Apocalypse Now.
2. Saving Private Ryan. 3. The Train. |
An under-viewed gem...

That is a good one. A downer, for sure [kind of a “DUH!” given the title], but a good one. As far as a favorite, I would have to go with “Saving Private Ryan.” Much like “Silverado” in the Western genre, “Saving Private Ryan” takes the best parts of old war movies and presents it with good acting, modern film technology and butt-kicking sound. xoxo~ Gaz Admits to a soft spot for the bazillion John Wayne war flicks. |
Patton
Gettysburg Band of Brothers (Even though it's not technically a movie) And for some reason, I'll always watch Heartbreak Ridge if it's on. |
I love war movies especially any WWII movies so my favorites are:
Saving Private Ryan Platoon Band of Brothers (technically not a movie) The Great Escape |
Pretty much all of them.
|
"War of the Roses." It doesn't get any nastier than this.

Jeez, not one mention of, IMO, one of the greatest war flicks of all time: Hamburger Hill.
Anyway, off the top of my head... Glory Apocalypse Now Patton Saving Private Ryan The Longest Day A Bridge Too Far The Battle of Britain Black Hawk Down Platoon Where Eagles Dare Tora Tora Tora Midway |
This is why they make lots of movies...
“Go Tell The Spartans” is far superior to “Hamburger Hill.” xoxo~ Gaz Would not put HH anywhere near the top. |
Dr. StrageLove
Full Metal Jacket Apocalypse NOW Braveheart The Patriot (w/Mel Gibson) Saving Private Ryan Platoon The Gladiator We Were Soldiers |
'Run silent, run deep' and 'They were expendable' are two of my favs. And who can't love 'The dirty dozen'!
|
Has anyone mentioned "A Midnight Clear." Heavy-handed symbolism, but there were some scenes that disturbed me. That movie shook me up the first time I saw it.
|
Apocalypse Now, hands down.

one flick that sticks with you. mother flipping out at the end and setting off the 'chain reaction' is a total (bad) trip. the other scene that sticks is they way the morgue soldier treats father after the squad hauls his body halfway across france. very disturbing film... |
I think for hand to hand combat "WAR" that Braveheart is one of the GREATEST movies I have ever seen.
Back then you didn't any real type of medicine let alone conventional medicine. What did that mean ???? You were one tough Mother fucker or you died. That was a great WAR movie Cliff |
Full Metal Jacket, there has never been a better war movie made and never will be.

Gotta luv R. Lee Ermy dontcha.
Mail call is one of my favourite TV shows. My wife just shakes her head when R Lee is on. |
Quote:
Of course, I put The Train near the top, even though it's a movie about guerilla civilians saving a trainload of art during WWII, not so much a 'war' movie. |
If anyone is interested Sargent York is on TCM this Thurs at 8:30PM
|

I suppose FMJ is a little less of a "war movie" when you think about it, when the best parts of the movie are about basic. I suppose the best movie envolving most war to me would have to be Gettysburg. |
