Chiefs sign Kendrell Bell (ESPN Insider)
According to ESPN Insider, from the NFL Rumor Central:
Mar. 8 - Linebacker Kendrell Bell and the Chiefs have agreed to a multi-year deal that includes $10 million in guarantees. The Eagles were also interested in Bell, but stopped pursuing him when they re-signed Jeremiah Trotter. Bell, 26, is coming off a season in which he was limited to three games because of a recurring groin injury. He underwent surgery in October to repair a sports hernia. Bell was the NFL's defensive rookie of the year in 2001. |
Still not satisfied!
~ Hartwell too would take me there |
Hmm.
Wasn't my first choice, but it's something. If'n it's true. Let's get a corner now. |

FINALLY! althouhg my 3rd choice at MLB MUCHO BETTER than Mitchell
|
Don't kid me...BELL IS A STUD WHEN HEALTHY!!
|
First off :) 2nd that is a lot of cash. Guess we can forget about Hartwell and the other.
|
If true, Bell is an awesome signing. I never thought Kendrell would sign here. This guy is more of a playmaker than Hartwell...A lot more of a playmaker, but there is more risk involved.
|
if true this is a good signing, and consistent with our offensive fa acquisitions. Bell could turn into a monster lb if he can stay healthy.
|
That's a good start, now keep moving Peterson you hump.
|
Not going to complain if that happens, but it would be reeruned to give a double digit SB to Bell when we wouldn't even offer one to Hartwell.
|
I'm not buying that until queen carl comes out and says it
until then, its a ploy to divert attention away from CP |
Chiefs sign Bell

We have enough money to sign anyone we want. ~Want Hartwell too. |
This guy is just another sucky 2nd/3rd tier free agent that no one else wanted and we overpaid for him. Man Carl is such a moron.

KANSAS CITY AGREES TO TERMS WITH UFA LB KENDRELL BELL
Mar 08, 2005, 1:26:21 PM Kansas City Chiefs President Carl Peterson announced on Tuesday that the club has agreed to terms of a seven-year contract with unrestricted free agent LB Kendrell Bell. As per Chiefs policy, no other terms of the agreement were made available. “I’m pleased to conclude this negotiation with (Bell’s representative) Todd France,” Peterson commented. “I enjoyed it because we both wanted to get a deal done and I think that this is a very good contract for both parties. We’re pleased to acquire Kendrell’s services and we think he will make an impact for the Chiefs in 2005 and beyond. He’s a quality football player, as well as a quality person.” “Kendrell is very excited about joining the Chiefs and believes he can make a huge impact on the defense,” France stated. “I can tell you that the entire process, working with Carl and (Executive Vice President/Assistant GM) Denny (Thum) was a great experience. The Chiefs are a first-class organization.” Bell (6-1, 257) has played in 47 regular season games (44 starts), recording 255 tackles (206 solo) and 18.0 sacks (-145.0 yards). He also owns one interception (61 yards), a fumble recovery, three forced fumbles and five passes defensed. The University of Georgia product has also seen duty in four career postseason contests (three starts), owning 25 tackles (20 solo) and a sack (-1.0 yard). The 2001 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, Bell originally entered the NFL as a second-round selection (39th overall) of Pittsburgh. He earned a Pro Bowl invitation in his inaugural pro campaign with the Steelers after producing 88 tackles (74 solo), 9.0 sacks (-84.0 yards) and a pair of forced fumbles. He was also a second-team All-Pro selection by the Associated Press in 2001 and was named the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Month in both October and November of that year. The Augusta, Georgia native enjoyed his best all-around pro season in 2003. That year he was named an alternate to the Pro Bowl after racking up 108 tackles (88 solo) to rank second on the squad. He also accumulated 5.0 sacks (-36.0 yards), an interception, three passes defensed and a forced fumble. Bell posted 153 tackles (95 solo), 7.0 sacks, five forced fumbles and 14 QB pressures during his collegiate tenure at Georgia. As a senior in 2000, he was a second-team All-Southeastern Conference selection when he started the final 10 contests of the year at middle linebacker, ranking second on the team with 92 tackles (53 solos). He also added 2.0 sacks, two fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles, an interception, three passes defensed and two QB pressures. Bell joined the Bulldogs following a two-year stay at Middle Georgia Junior College where he registered 132 tackles and 6.0 sacks as a sophomore after rushing for 689 yards as a fullback during his freshman campaign. An all-state selection in football as a senior at Laney High School in Augusta, Georgia, he also lettered in basketball and track during his prep career. |

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES! Thank you carl for doing something smart. We need more than just Bell but MLB is bad area for us. Bell has attitude that we need badly. I will not bash you for the rest of the day.
|
will he play MLB or OLB? WHB is speculating that he'll fill the spot vacated by Barber.
|
seven years, waht are the terms?
|
I think the fact that CP came out of the Rolle fiasco looking like a dork .... helped get this deal moving a lot faster than maybe it would have.
Bell's a good player. |
I can't believe we'd play him on the outside and start Mitchell. But we do lots of things I can't believe.
|
Stupid question here, but Bell's a MLB, right? Or is he an OLB?
|
Finally somebody, atleast we signed a guy that WANTED to be here, i still want hartwell though damnit and add the corner!!! common domino effect!
|
:toast: :thumb: PBJ PBJ PBJ I think he is going to be a great fit!

Let's just forget about Hartwell...it's not going to happen now. They will focus on finding a corner with the remaining change.

Glory hallelujah!
NOW, Hartwell....and Law (or Smoot). :cuss: |

If we can sign Hartwell, and a CB (Law, Surtain, Dyson, Herndon, Smoot)...Our D will take a huge step forward in my opinion.
In 2003, Bell was regarded as one of the best LB's in the game. |
As usual, we overpaid for an injury prone, 2nd/3rd tier free agent that no other NFL team in their right mind would want. Carl is such an idiot.
|
So, what'll the cheesy Star headline be?
Chiefs Answer the Bell Bell Tolls for the Chiefs All's Well that Ends Bell |
If we can sign Hartwell too I will be stoked. We would have a monster LB-crew with Bell AND Hartwell.
Also, its reported as a 7-year deal. How does this work with the CBA expiring? |

lets make at least 1 level of the defense decent.... sign Hartwell!! |
Kind of like taking a piss after holding it for a 3 hour car ride ain't it?

I'd rather have Hartwell, but shit, this is something...
|
I like the effort to get it done. I'm still hoping for another key defensive signing with the other hole to be filled via the draft.
|
In 2003, Bell had 100 tackles, 5 sacks, 1 Int, and 3 passes defended. His rookie season was awesome too (Won Defensive Rookie of the Year award). He had 83 tackles and 9 sacks.
|
Bell is a monster! I have always wanted him or a player like him since we lost DT. If he stays healthy (which he believes he is) he will make a very good addition.
Now we just need a CB or two! |
Quote:
Chiefs move up the Bell curve Chiefs defense gets Bell-y button Chiefs defense gets more Bell-icose Chiefs sign Bobby Bell [This is Gretz.] |
If he stays healthy he will do well, atleast he should...this eases yesterdays pain just a bit now. lets get some more done now!
|
Well, it's a step in the right direction. He's a good player when healthy.
Now, let's at a minimum add a #1 corner. Hopefully another LB too. |
It's too bad Quitlock's not on the air to tell us all how he made this happen.

Wow ... not bad for a team with a cheap-assed owner and incompetent GM. ;)
Acutally, I was more of a Hartwell kinda guy (fewer injury concernts), but Bell is young and an immediate upgrade. Now ... trade for Surtain or sign Law to a performance-laiden contract and I'll be pleased with the FA period. Then either draft Rolle, James or trade up for Williams and I'll be freaking estatic. MM ~~:thumb: |
You guys that think Bell can play outside are crazy. He's 260 pounds.

That shit doesn't matter. The question is, can he be ejected from a car traveling 70 mph and get up with a mere dislocated shoulder? Didn't think so. Surviving that kind of a wreck is what gets you drafted in the second round by the Chiefs. |
Finally! Though I assume this means the door is closed on Hartwell. I like what Bell brings to the field, I am a bit concerned though about him actually seeing the field more than the trainer's room.
So, who's next to sign and how long will it take? |
Quote:
|
So how come we "had to pass" on Rolle due to injury but had no problem signing Bell?

Also, Bell can play OLB better than Hartwell (who doesn't want to play OLB), so maybe getting both is an option. I'm not holding my breath, and KC still needs an upgrade at CB, but it'll be interesting ... MM ~~ |

Bell is known for very good pass coverage skills. There isn't a better athlete in the NFL at 6'1, 250. Maybe as good, but not better. |

sign hartwell now .. then start trying to find away to get smoot/law/dyson. Then grab a corner in the 1st round of the draft ... maybe the first 2 rounds. |

Actually, I won't be happy until the get a true #1 CB and draft a player who can come in and be a starter. But this is a start ... MM ~~ |

I personally like Bell alot more than Hartwell... Bell is the better athlete and bigger impact player when healthy. Hopefully his string of bad luck is over.
I am elated with this signing. --Kyle |

Awesome. We pass up the guy who passed his physical due to injury concerns, then sign a guy who failed one.
|
I know someone has said this before, but a LB playing for the Chiefs with the last name of "Bell" can't be a bad thing.
|
So what are Bell's injuries and how serious have they been. Also, what’s the story with Barber?

Pittsburgh beatwriter Ed Bouchette is on 610. Highlights:
Explosive playmaker, great at getting up the field and to the QB/RB Pittsburgh couldn't find a way to use him on 3rd down, tried everything. Apparently studing the playbook and other teams is not a strength CANNOT cover (not a good fit at OLB) Thinks he's maybe a better fit as a 4-3 MLB than a 3-4 ILB, thinks he can make a real impact here if he can stay healthy |
