Censorship Policy
 

The users of ChiefsPlanet decided many years ago that we would censor a select few objectionable words. We decided the F-bomb, C-bomb, and N-bomb were amongst those. We have since added ANY racial slur to that list. We've also stated that any attempt to circumvent our automatic censor would result in severe punishment.

However, we've not been very consistent. For instance, I've always allowed a partially censored "fuck" to stand. I have never allowed umulats or other such methods of fooling the filter to remain if I discovered them. Our lack of consistency has recently been pointed out and I'd like to solve the issue. Please vote your preference.

I'm abstaining. Hell, I'll talk the way I talk regardless of how it's fucking censored.

This is a tangent, but what is the Planet's policy for making major decisions like this. Is it simple majority? Is there a guideline regarding the number of options in the poll or about how they should be constructed (to avoid manipulation)? Might not be a bad idea to establish that policy at some point, or re-state what the current guidelines are.

Ehh, if we can't use it, we can't use it. I abstain.

Simple majority in something like this.

There have been a few circumstances where it has required more but it is generally announced in advance.

For instance, if 30% of our board feels a moderator is out of line and deserves to be fired, I think that's too high.

If you decided to censor some words, and common variations of them, I'd support it. I don't know how its going to do alot of good though, considering alot of the material and subject matter.

Thats also what I voted, the Titans board is so censored its no fun even being over there sometimes......wait I haven't been over there in a loooong time come to think of it.

Yeah - now that I'm looking at this poll, I'm not sure how fair it is anyway. Maybe I should start another poll to determine the fairness of this one....

I'm not sure there's any real point to the censorship if fuck is ok.
I also wonder how any other variations wouldn't be ok, since fuck is about as close to actually writing the word without censorship as one can get.

As for the censorship, I don't really care one way or the other.

It's easier to just type the ****ing word and let the software do whatever the **** it wants...

I really do not see the point, if there is anyone on this BB that does not encounter the word fuck several times a week they are leading a very sheltered life. This includes anyone down to the age of 10. Parents who freak out over the word should visit a middleschool and really listen this word is in very common usage from around the 6th grade on.

??? Even if there were no censorship, I doubt the Planet would rate that high on any variant of a "fuck" search, with the possible exception of "fuck you Carl."

Just from a visiting perspective... I think it really depends on the demographic visiting the site. If it is a family-type crowd or work-safe crowd that visits, then the expectations might be a bit different in terms of what should be seen.

Honestly, censorship does suck, but it also allows more viewing from the family/work crowd IMO...A double edged sword if there ever was one however...

Deadwood has gotten to the point where every other word is the F Bomb. I started watching it in the beginning but it is starting to get old by wearing the F Bomb out. They do have some nice T&A once in a while though, western style.

I feel like Chiefsplanet is a little world where I'm allowed to be myself among people who can also be themselves without fear that they are breaking the rules or being censored. That's why we all left the Star board in the first place.


I'm not saying that censoring a few words is as bad as what the Star board was doing, but I think it's a step in the wrong direction. I believe a good majority of the people on this board use these words on a regular basis, and even if they don't, few are probably offended just to see them. I also disagree that Chiefsplanet should be some kind of "clean" enviornment. We're a bunch of football fans that like women, and farts and shit. We shouldn't be ashamed of that. This is the place where we should CELEBRATE that.


Having an optional filter (like we do) should be enough.
Having the option of turning off signatures, avatars, and attachments (like we do) should be enough.
Policing ourselves in regards to spam, trolls, and VERY offensive posters (like we do) should be enough.

It's all about context, IMO. Everything. People need to look strongly at what people mean, and not exactly what people say...

This board has been good at people being considerate. I haven't been around lately, but it's not too often that I see inappropriate language.
I say, as long as we keep it to a minimum, the way things are should suffice.

I use the above variation which in the last year has been plastered across every theatre marquee, screen and movie guide in the USA,don't see how it should be a problem here.

Personally,I don't agree with the censorship issue and voted as such but alot of you were here long before I so I'll abide by whatever the final vote is.

-Considerate of what? People's sensitivity to "inappropriate language?" Maybe you haven't seen the multiple threads about the word "fuck" recently. Regardless, if you are sensitive about those words (or pictures or anything else), it's up to you to avoid them through the means provided. IE: profanity filters, turning off avatars/sigs/attachments. It shouldn't, IMO, be up to us to protect you from things you don't like by ceasing. This board is built by and meant for adults who are responsible for what they do and see.

See, this is exactly my point. We come to Chiefsplanet, not just for football news, but to get to know people. This is a community. If we were all meeting at a bowling alley, EnDelt would have every right to say this. So, he should have every right to say it here. If it pisses off Angela, then HE has to deal with it. But it shouldn't be Chiefsplanet's job to protect EnDelt from that wrath. Consequently, if we disallowed EnDelt to be his normal, cheery self, we couldn't say that we actually know him could we? But, I'd say by not censoring EnDelt, we've all gotten to know him pretty well, and that's a GOOD thing!

Now, if some kid walks into the bowling alley and hears some adults swearing, that's not the end of the world. Same should go with Chiefsplanet.

Agreed. Although I would go further. If you don't think something is appropriate...then don't say it. That's your perogative. Your responsibility, even. Just like it's mine to decide that abso-fucking-lutely nothing is inappropriate. Filter if you want, that's also your right. Personally, I don't see the point; I'm fooling myself if I think seeing '****' instead of 'fuck' somehow covers up what's being said, even in spirit. And in the end, jesus christ, we're talking about words here. As for kids, well, as has been pointed out, this is an adult site, but if a kid on here sees (gasp) one of my "dirty" words, then by all means I grant the supervising adult full permission to point at me as a bad man and an example of how you do not want him/her to behave.

Actually, that personalized filter hasn't worked for a long time - since we upgraded the board, at least.
