What does Live 8's goal mean to the average Joe?

So all of these millionaire rock stars want our government to forgive the African debt. Does that mean our deficit will rise or our taxes will be higher? Will we just be giving oil to African countries who will become the next Saudi Arabia? Does Africa even make a monthly payment to Uncle Sam for this debt?

I really want to see Pink Floyd reunited but I am not sure where I stand on their goal.

Does anyone have info. on the impact of Todays concert on our economy?

It would have as much impact on our economy as does the tourists contributions to San Francisco's homeless bums.

I predict that the deman for razor blades will go up if they try to do "Hands Accross America" again next.

chagrin 07-02-2005 03:23 PM

All I know is the USA is contributes the most, dollar for dollar, cash benefits, and food, to the cause as it is. Not to mention the 4.5 billion dollars donated in 2003.

Offensive statement below, take it for what it is, a horrible joke...

"We should have sent helicotpers over there with 4.5 billion zippers instead of encouraging the lack of abstinence"

jspchief 07-02-2005 03:38 PM

Personally, I think it's monumental waste of money fueled by a bunch of posturing egos.

I believe in the old adage about give a man a fish vs teaching him to fish.

If these people are dying, it's be cause they live in a climate that's not conducive to life. What would the world be missing if they all dropped dead?

Frazod 07-02-2005 03:41 PM

Let these multi-millionaire bleeding heat douchebags give enough of their own money so that they have as much left I as I do now, and then perhaps I'll pay attention to them.

The real problem in Africa is corrupt governments impeding economic growth. No amount of aid will help. Aid is usually counterproductive because it helps the crooks maintain power. A recent report in Kenya has found that dishonest government officials have looted $280 BILLION from that country alone! The bleeding hearts don't want to discuss this, they just want to feel good by sending our money down this bottomless pit.

Dave Lane 07-02-2005 04:40 PM

They do not owe the US government the money. Its the world bank. Oh and jsp thanks for the new sig line.

Oh brother. I was second guessing myself for even posting it, now you're going to breathe life into it.

Spending a Saturday afternoon out in the over-populated, holiday weekend public has pushed the limits of my fuse. I guess it boiled over into that post.

Rausch 07-02-2005 05:51 PM

I'd prefer to see Americans spending their dollars on less fortunate Americans myself.

But if it gets Pink Floyd to play again I guess I'm behind it...

That pretty much sums up all the activist crap that comes out of hollywood or from musicians. They live in 30 room homes in beverly Hills and then tell us that we Americans should give more. I'll give them something alright

When Bono lives on 40K a year and gives the rest of his money to charity, I'll follow suit...:)

Wow. Never underestimate the entertainment industry's proclivity for self-promotion.

/but Geldof's a good guy.

WTF has Geldof ever done, except star in The Wall and promote these concerts?

Seriously, I don't know.

It was simple question, asked and answered.

Get over yourself.

sparkky 07-03-2005 01:32 PM

it's easy for the rich to be noble in their causes.
I have no pity on their cause. Send Africa a few million $$ worth of viagra and speed up the problem curing itself process.

StcChief 07-04-2005 12:53 AM

DILGAF.
Let these millionare rockstars buck up. What else have they done for the world.

Can someone explain this mentality to me. Why are people from your won country more important?

Because the order of "I give a $#it" starts with people in my own country first.

Amazing how quick poverty, war, and racism would end if everyone picked up the dog turds in their own back yard before peeking over the fence and complaining about the neighbors...

I understand what your saying, but doesn't the fact that some people in africa are 10x worse off than anyone in the US make a difference?

No.

If someone in your family has cancer do you feel worse when someone in my family dies?...

keg in kc 07-04-2005 05:25 AM

You can worry about others as much as you want, but if you're not healthy yourself, you'll never be able to do as much for them as you could be if you were.

And, frankly, a lot of our "good will" is politically motivated. There's not a whole lot of genuine philanthropy, and I think we could stand to pull our dirty little fingers out of a few places.

Good point, but the difference is I probably have a much closer relationship with the person in my family than I do with the person in yours. You probably don't have any relationship with people in africa and you may have just as little relationship with the poorest people in the US.

You're right, but it still helps.

I have a hard time sending money to people that are too stupid to stop ****ing to save themselves.
