Falcon Defense?

Someone who knows alot of details. could you please explain the falcon defense and when we used it and what is the benefit?

Fire Me Boy! 08-05-2005 09:22 PM

IIRC, it basically was stick DT out there to sack the passer... that's about it. Let DT get after the QB.

so it was a base 4-3 with dt out on the side of a de? was dt the 3rd backer or was he a lineman?

Phobia 08-05-2005 09:29 PM

Are you familiar with the box & 1 defense in basketball?

Same concept. DT was the 1.

It was a 3-4 hybrid that put DT's hand on the ground wherever he wanted on the line, most frequently from the edges.

Technically it was a 3-4, but DT mostly lined up with his hand on the ground so it looked a lot like a 4-3. It basically allowed DT to freelance.

chappy 08-05-2005 09:33 PM

what years did we use this?

Fire Me Boy! 08-05-2005 09:34 PM

'97 only, I think.

chappy 08-05-2005 09:35 PM

i wonder what our defense ranked that year?

Deberg_1990 08-05-2005 09:36 PM

Ironically in 1995 and 1997, DT only had 8 and 9.5 sacks. I remember there were alot of people at the time that didnt think DT was very good when he lined up in the Falcon.

Points scored: 375 (#6 of 30 in the NFL)
Points allowed: 232 (#1 of 30 in the NFL)

Yeah. I think the concept was great and played to DT's strengths. But it didn't work out well for the front 3 and DT spent a lot of time injured while the Falcon was deployed. Pellom McDaniels wasn't a very good backup for DT either. Who would have been?

Whats funny is, he had some of his biggest sack seasons before Gunther ever came to KC. Who was our D-Coordinator in the early 90's? Dave Adolph??

chappy 08-05-2005 09:46 PM

no wonder i don't remember i was pretty young then. i liked football but didn't study in to the game like i do now.

chappy 08-05-2005 09:49 PM

he tore it up in '90!!!!! i was 7 years old then wow thats along time ago.

Yeah. I'm not sure Gunther had a chance to really work out the Falcon defense. If he had pursued it another year, maybe they'd have worked out some of the weaknesses but somebody put the kibash to the Falcon.

chappy 08-05-2005 09:58 PM

Nightfyre 08-05-2005 11:33 PM

I want cowher to coach here... :(

Demonpenz 08-05-2005 11:47 PM

you always wanted to run directly at DT and try to punish him. Anything away from him or passing he was just to quick

You're lucky. You're still young enough where the years still pass slowly for you. Wait till you hit 30. The years start wizzing by so fast that if you blink you've missed 5. 1990 may seem like a long time ago for you. But it seems like last week to me. :D

mcan 08-06-2005 02:01 AM

Like others have said, it was a 3-4, but the outside backer (usually Derrick) would line up as the right defensive end. Unfortunately this put him in a position where if the tackle got ahold of him, he was OUT of the play entirely. It was also very suspect against the run. This was the year of our "Bend but don't break" defense, when Mark McMillian led the AFC in interceptions as a nickle back, and we seemed to score a touchdown a week on defense or special teams.

I have yet to see a Chiefs team match the magic of 93. Wow.

In 50 years no one will know who Keith Cash was outside of Missouri... :)

Oh I don't know, the magic of 1969 wasn't too shabby. I was 12 that fall. The memory keeps getting more fragmented. It was a lifetime ago.

Nope I almost freaking died, I was pretty sure they lost the game.

That's about the only thing I remember about Keith Cash.

This is the correct answer.

It was a floating LB position. DT lined up where ever he wanted. DT was a great talent as a player. But he was no defensive coordinator. The team was more effective without it.

The idea might work wit the right player. But when DT played it he became completely one dimmensional. All he wanted to do was rush the passer.
