so what is a possession receiver?
Pardon my ignorance, even though I'm not new to the game I never did figure this one out. What the hell is everyone talking about?

a receiver who specializes in running shorter routes and getting 1st downs instead of going deep for the long touchdown passes.
1st downs = keeping possession usually a guy gets labeled that because he doesn't have quite enough speed to regularly get behind the cornerbacks and safeties, so he works in front of them. |
Randy Moss, Michael Irvin, Tamarick Vanover....you know, guys who are "holding"...

Possession receiver is a guy who isn't flashy and doesn't have great speed. Nobody wants him on their fantasy team, but every head coach wants one. But he's the guy who runs good routes and will catch the ball when it's thrown his way.

It's a receiver that maintains possession of the ball... yesterday, Lelie was not a possession receiver.

Past their prime, for the most part...
Good hands, as opposed to speed. Guile over raw athletic ability. A possession receiver is what guys can become when they have lost the speed of their youth. Get open, make the catch, first down. xoxo~ Gaz Lacking both guile and raw athletic ability. |
One more..
Possession Receiver = The white guy

It appears with the responses to this then I would be a "possession drinker".
|
Great hands, average speed.
|
Meshawn Johnson.
|
Troy Brown and Wayne Chrebet. No doubt there are others, but for the next 40 years, those two guys are probably the ones that will pop into my head.

Both of those dudes are going to hace to get more than 1 1000 yard season under there belts before they can jump over that level |
Coles is usually a possession receiver, though he dropped that gimme TD yesterday. He has speed though. The definitions vary.
|
That wold be Randy Moss when he gets busted for possession.

Kevin Lockett.....Chris Horn this year.
He's the guy you don't have on your FFB team, that the QB wants to throw the ball to, in traffic on 3rd and 5..and know he'll catch it, and hold it when hit. He's the guy whose stats are usually 5-38yds |

...and Eddie Kennison |
Possession receivers are also good at fronting the defender and must be able to take the big hit. Jerry Rice was a possession receiver that could take it to the house.
|
Steve Largent always comes to mind when I think of a possession receiver. Hence, the white guy comment from me earlier.
|
Possession receiver = slow receiver, but can catch.
|
Gonzalez. He's the guy that will go over the middle and take the hits while catching the ball for a first down.
