so what is a possession receiver?

Pardon my ignorance, even though I'm not new to the game I never did figure this one out. What the hell is everyone talking about?

Mr. Laz 09-12-2005 12:04 PM

a receiver who specializes in running shorter routes and getting 1st downs instead of going deep for the long touchdown passes.

1st downs = keeping possession

usually a guy gets labeled that because he doesn't have quite enough speed to regularly get behind the cornerbacks and safeties, so he works in front of them.

Dartgod 09-12-2005 12:04 PM

Randy Moss, Michael Irvin, Tamarick Vanover....you know, guys who are "holding"...

Well yeah, that too.

Phobia 09-12-2005 12:05 PM

Possession receiver is a guy who isn't flashy and doesn't have great speed. Nobody wants him on their fantasy team, but every head coach wants one. But he's the guy who runs good routes and will catch the ball when it's thrown his way.

also, receivers who are slow (Keyshawn Johnson).

Mile High Mania 09-12-2005 12:06 PM

It's a receiver that maintains possession of the ball... yesterday, Lelie was not a possession receiver.

Gaz 09-12-2005 12:07 PM

Past their prime, for the most part...

Good hands, as opposed to speed. Guile over raw athletic ability. A possession receiver is what guys can become when they have lost the speed of their youth.

Get open, make the catch, first down.

xoxo~
Gaz
Lacking both guile and raw athletic ability.

Possession Receiver = The white guy

I was going to say the same thing about Laverneus Coles, but either one works.

It appears with the responses to this then I would be a "possession drinker".

el borracho 09-12-2005 12:24 PM

Great hands, average speed.

Spicy McHaggis 09-12-2005 12:26 PM

Meshawn Johnson.

Amnorix 09-12-2005 12:39 PM

Troy Brown and Wayne Chrebet. No doubt there are others, but for the next 40 years, those two guys are probably the ones that will pop into my head.

Both of those dudes are going to hace to get more than 1 1000 yard season under there belts before they can jump over that level

HolmeZz 09-12-2005 12:43 PM

Coles is usually a possession receiver, though he dropped that gimme TD yesterday. He has speed though. The definitions vary.

Braincase 09-12-2005 12:44 PM

That wold be Randy Moss when he gets busted for possession.

I really, really don't think of Coles as a possession guy. Not that he's an amazing burner, either, but he's got too much speed, and his hands aren't great enough, to be what I would consider a possession guy.

Iowanian 09-12-2005 12:56 PM

Kevin Lockett.....Chris Horn this year.

He's the guy you don't have on your FFB team, that the QB wants to throw the ball to, in traffic on 3rd and 5..and know he'll catch it, and hold it when hit.

He's the guy whose stats are usually 5-38yds

Possession receivers are also good at fronting the defender and must be able to take the big hit. Jerry Rice was a possession receiver that could take it to the house.

Dartgod 09-12-2005 01:43 PM

Steve Largent always comes to mind when I think of a possession receiver. Hence, the white guy comment from me earlier.

Rain Man 09-12-2005 02:00 PM

Possession receiver = slow receiver, but can catch.

Pitt Gorilla 09-12-2005 02:06 PM

Gonzalez. He's the guy that will go over the middle and take the hits while catching the ball for a first down.

He's always had pretty good hands, IMO. I've seen him hold on to a few catches after getting absolutely annihilated going over the middle too. ROFL
