CHIEFS SB DROUGHT RANT

With Seattle going to the SB this year, it makes this stat official: EVERY SINGLE AFCW TEAM OTHER THAN THE KC CHIEFS HAS HAD AT LEAST ONE SUPERBOWL APPEARANCE SINCE THE BEGINNING OF CARL PETERSON'S TENURE. :grr:
True, Seattle is now in the NFC, but they were AFCW when Peterson took the wheel.

In the same time period only Detroit and New Orleans have been as pathetic, playoff-wise.

So CP gets a fat new contract? Where do I apply for this job? Requirements: behave like a conceited ass, bray about ticket sales, continually increase parking and ticket prices, denegrate the media and fanbase, get PAID, and worry not about results on the field. Think I could do that for a cool $mil, or four.

I know what you're saying, but I'm reluctant to hang Seattle on Carl. Moving to the NFC improved Seattle's chances of a Super Bowl, IMO. It's become an apples and oranges comparison. Bottom line, Seattle was unable to even win a playoff game when they were in the AFC during Carl's tenure.

Yeah, put the Chiefs in Seattle's division and who knows what could have happened...

HC_Chief 01-23-2006 09:48 AM

Irrelevant. Fact of the matter is they did it!

No excuses are acceptable. This team under CP has FAILED to make a SB. Hell, it has been TWELVE YEARS since we even SNIFFED a SB appearance. :grr:

Hoover 01-23-2006 09:49 AM

If the Chiefs were in the NFC we would have made it to multiple SBs (this year and 2003)

Valid.

MOhillbilly 01-23-2006 09:52 AM

carl said himself its more important to have a winning season.

FloridaMan88 01-23-2006 09:55 AM

Carl and Lamar's "Super Bowl" is making $$$$$$ and selling out Arrowhead year after year.

donkhater 01-23-2006 10:00 AM

Not only that, but an expansion franchise (Carolina) has made it to 3 conference championship games in the last 9 years while KC has 2 playoff appearances total.

1-3 in the NFC this year.

The chiefs had plenty of chances to make the playoffs as an AFC team, for god's sake. When you don't take those chances you can't expect to make the SB.

how many playoffs berths for the Jags.

Hoover 01-23-2006 10:05 AM

Um if we were in the NFC we would have also been able to play their shitty teams as well.

NYG, and DAL were good teams in the NFC, Philly when we played them where still good, and we should have won all of those games.

No, that's what Joe Posnanski said what Carl feels takling about how if given the choice of playoff seasons year in and year out with no guarantee of a super bowl or a superbowl but five 4 win seasons after that he would take the playoffs every year and hope to make the superbowl. There wasn't a quote from Carl about that.

Which is exactly my point. They had opportunities to win and didn't. It's this sort of failure that leads to watching the january games from the comfort of your couch, rather than playing in them. If the chiefs couldn't roll the 5th seed, or two teams that didn't make the playoffs, i don't see how they could have matched it with seattle, carolina or chicago. Not on the road, at least.

Conference dominance comes and goes, how long was the NFC's SB streak until the broncos won it?

What?

BigChiefFan 01-23-2006 10:13 AM

We AREN'T in the NFC, so why all the hypothetical what-ifs? The bottomline is we haven't won a playoff game in over a decade, but ownership couldn't be happier with the job Carl is doing. It's depressing to think our team has sucked for as long as they have and the powers that be are content.

Messier, how dare you bring truth into this! CP is evil, therefore the Chiefs suck!

Now, can we talk about baseball or golf?

One of the problems, in my opinion, is that the cardinals, saints and 49ers (for example) will make not a whole lot less profit than the Seahawks, Steelers and Broncos. Most of the cash is the even split from the DGR, and it doesn't provide financial incentive to win. Football teams are expensive businesses and owners may well want a return, every season.

If the after-costs money was split proportionally to performance (i.e. reverse of the draft order) (so a team covers its costs but they have to win to profit), you'd see the Cardinals winning more games and the Chiefs winning more playoff games.

Cop out? WTF are you on about? I'm pointing out that there are greater financial incentives associated with having constant 9-7, 10-6 seasons, than there are with going 4-12 for a couple of years then winning the superbowl. That seems the accepted wisdom, anyway.

Change that, however you want to do it, and i'd bet that a) some of the perrenial cellar dwellers would start to perform, and b) the chiefs would start pushing into the playoffs. But then there might be 3-13 seasons aswell.

That's been the problem with the Chiefs for a while. We haven't been willing to field a 3-13 type team, for fear of fan retaliation (poor attendance). No, what we did was to put band aids on broken pipes for the last 8+ years (since the 1998 playoff game against Denver). It's called false hope. The Chiefs have been selling winning seasons since the early 1990's, but the product has no guts to it. No playoff wins in the last 12 years? Are you fuggin kidding me?

I don't wanna hear from CP how fuggin close we are, have been, going be to being a SB contender. We're no closer to that objective than we were when CP took over the Management of this Franchise in the late 80's. Seattle going to the SB just emphasizes how FN pathetic we truely have been.

ever see a player or coach wearing a runners up SB ring?

Don't kid yourself. Lamar want's another SB in the worse way, hell, I'm sure he'd like to see the Chiefs name on his own Trophy (AFC Champs) before he dies. But, CP has convinced him that he's doing the right things (winning, making money, selling out the stadium, etc.) and it will eventually get him the SB. What he hasn't been completely truthful about is that his system doesn't work beyond the regular season. When the rubber meets the road, his system fails to perform. I'm sad to say that the owner purchased the same fools gold we've all been buying for the last 15+ years.

WE WUZ ROOOOOOOOOOOOOBBED! :p

The only problem I have with that theory, if you want to call it that, is that it's been FIFTEEN years.

Is Lamar really that gullible? Or is the money/sales enough to offset the disappointment when it comes to winning?

With as long as he kept the last GM who did nothing, I expect that while Lamar would like to win the SB again I think that he is most proud of the fact that he helped bring the NFL and AFL together, getting his name on the AFC trophy and getting to SB I and winning SB IV, then he is worried about getting to the SB again. He is happy to have a team that can beat someone on any given Sunday and is happy that his team has become such a big deal in KC.

Rhetoric. What motivates Lamar, we are never going to know. But a 17 year tenure (and counting) for the GM which includes one trip to the AFC championship game and bugger all else, suggests to me that Hunt has other priorites. Or that he'd like a SB win but he's not prepared to forego the status quo of winning season after winning season to get one.

I'm not saying that the coaches and players don't work their guts out each and every season.

Big ****in whoop. We haven't won a Super bowl. Haven't even been to one. I've still been entertained over the years, and that is what we are paying for, entertainment. I want the team I root for to win a championship as much as the next guy, but my place as a fan is to be there and support the team through the thick and the thin. I'm not going to pull my support just because we don't win the big one.

I'm ready to see the reaction if they don't agree to a collective bargaining agreement and 2007 becomes an uncapped year.

Then Lamar won't be spending any money at all because you'll really have to pay for players. The Chiefs would become the Royals........
