Animated Sigs: You Make The Call

There's been some discussion on another thread about animated sigs and whether or not to keep them or make them a thing of the past to help improve board performance. Delt suggested I make this poll and hinted that what's decided here may become board policy. Ya gotta love democracy.

Be advised, this is a public poll. If you don't have the sack (not you, ladies) to voice your opinion here, don't whine about it later if this becomes board policy.

Dunit35 02-04-2006 11:58 PM

Umm.I'm changing my mind. Keep them.. I don't really seem them a whole lot anyways.

Hammock Parties 02-04-2006 11:58 PM

I think animated sigs are OK.

What we need is a limitation on the file size.

I would say no more than 250k.

ChiefsFire 02-04-2006 11:59 PM

limit the size

and boobies only

58-4ever 02-05-2006 12:01 AM

I say we should allow them. The internet gets faster everyday. computers are getting faster. The evolution of technology will render the complaint of slow loading obsolete. We will be making a rule change that will seem primitive in the near future. Animations actually don't slow my computer down now, and I don't think there should be a rule banning these often entertaining features.

KCChiefsMan 02-05-2006 12:01 AM

I've been banned from having sigs, apparently. I think people were jealous of my Larry Johnson "just give me the damn ball" photoshop that I created early in the season....and it turned out to be correct.

Or maybe it was too big and I never read my little message asking me to resize it, which I would have gladly done if I had read it in time! but oh well, I don't care that much about it.

I can't see other people's sigs though, so it doesn't affect me

I made this in week 2 of the season.....WHO WAS RIGHT????

hypersensitiveZO6 02-05-2006 12:04 AM

they are absolutely fine. take away all restrictions

Sure-Oz 02-05-2006 12:08 AM

you get rid of animated sigs you get rid of jessica, no mas!

Dunit35 02-05-2006 12:09 AM

I like seeing the Chiefs ones.

Hammock Parties 02-05-2006 12:09 AM

People should just use adblock. I think we should have a thread teaching people how to use it. It's a great tool.

teedubya 02-05-2006 12:10 AM

my friend, Dan, just hooked up with a chick that looks like she could be Jessica Alba's sister. What a score.

uh... if you dont like animated sigs... just go ahead and turn off sigs in your profile. Yes, whiny bitches, that means you.

Dunit35 02-05-2006 12:13 AM

The only one that makes my computer slower is the boobs one.

007 02-05-2006 12:20 AM

Who cares.

Miles 02-05-2006 12:31 AM

They annoy me quite a bit but I just use adblock. Occasionally there are ones that are good but mostly they are distracting while reading the board.

Filesize limit makes the most sense.

greg63 02-05-2006 01:56 AM

Keep it the way it is; I hope to add one of my kid playing football one of these days. :D

Bugeater 02-05-2006 02:03 AM

While I do find some of them to be a minor nuisance, I haven't complained about them.

However, I don't see why anyone should have to shut off sigs entirely just because a handful of members insist on using them.

Logical 02-05-2006 02:09 AM

I am not concerned about my end of the link. I am sick of the poor performance of the server and the database. You cannot convince me that freeing up some of the data stream wasted on the animations would not help the BB's performance.

I say be gone all you cute animations.

We can't make it board policy of course. I'm just saying I'm glad I have it.

Screw that! Ban everyone not using Firefox!

chefsos 02-05-2006 08:10 AM

I'm one of those still in the Stone Age, without a high speed connection. My dialup service has an text accelerator that leaves pictures and animations appearing as out of focus still shots, unless I choose to display one with full quality. I also generally leave sigs disabled anyway, excepting times like now whem I just want to see what the fuss is about.

So, none of them bother me, I say leave 'em be.

Braincase 02-05-2006 08:12 AM

Having people bitch and moan about things they themselves can control is like having someone comapling about how bad their ass smells because they don't wipe their own ass, but they ask you to wipe it for them. Learn how to use your control panel people. I've never had a problem, and I use IE almost exclusively.

I'd rather get rid of the n00bs.

Chieftain58 02-05-2006 08:40 AM

keep em how they are.

NJ Chief Fan 02-05-2006 09:00 AM

if i cant have one, no one should be able to have one :cuss:

Unless, of course, you're tasked with babysitting people who can't manage to comply with simple guidelines, and you have to leave the things turned on so you can monitor them.

I'm outraged that Domer had to remove the flying teats.

Bob Dole is likewise "outraged" that someone would think that a 3 megabyte dancing female sig is necessary on a football discussion forum, especially when it's typically attached to 60 bytes worth of actual discussion content.

Over and over and over again...

andoman 02-05-2006 10:04 AM

I voted to get rid of 'em. But actually, I don't care 'cause I've got them turned off anyway. If I could take my vote back, I'd vote to keep 'em. I do occasionally turn them on when someone makes a comment about one. We need 'em for the loosers of bets too, right?

If there's a way to disable the animations without disabling sigs entirely, I'd like to know.

That should have been stated with the poll question.

I'd like to change my vote. If they effect board performance, get rid of them. If they only affect individuals, leave them be.

Which was the rationale behind the 650 pixel width restriction. The assumption was that everyone has at least 800x600 screen resolution.

And FTR, Bob Dole has thought the original size restrictions were too liberal to begin with.

If every company that advertises on the web can manage to fit all their information in a standard 468x60 web banner, what the hell does a forum participant have to share that's so damned fascinating or important that it can't be contained within the same dimensions?

(Hint: The correct answer is "nothing.")

PastorMikH 02-05-2006 12:57 PM

I ran an animated sig for a long time myself. However, I'm for putting and end to them if it will increase BB performance. IF they could be allowed without pulling down the server perfomance, I wouldn't have a problem with them.

DomerNKC 02-05-2006 03:21 PM

boobies are the reason for everything.

Bugeater 02-05-2006 03:42 PM

OK, so I have an idea, why not just put the members that use them on "ignore"? That should solve the problem, right? So I try to put Sure-Oz on ignore and I get this message:

Sorry Sure-Oz is a moderator/admin and you are not allowed to ignore him or her.

What the fuck?

Bugeater 02-06-2006 08:43 AM

Still hanging on....

sedated 02-06-2006 09:01 AM

I vote to keep them, mainly because of DomerNKC's sig

Bugeater 02-06-2006 09:06 AM

If the "ignore" function worked properly, we'd have our answer right there.

Every sig should have a hot chick or 3 in it, according to Chiefsplanet rule #5b v1.

Iowanian 02-06-2006 11:55 AM

I have sigs and avatars disabled.

The thing some of you bone smokers don't comprehend, is that while a user may have things disabled and not see them.....Others, including employers may pop in and see it because they don't....same thing for those and the titty pics.

There is a time and place for everything. I find them unecessary on this board.

If some of you worked as hard on better content of your posts, as you do on skirting rules to get your tittytars on the board....it'd be better for everyone.

more than one good poster, has had to leave the planet, or stop posting due to "inappropriate content" and bouncing cyber tatas.

What people like you don't seem to understand is that there are some of us who are occasionally amused or entertained by them, and don't want to shut them off because of a handful of members. The ignore function is perfect, as long as the member doesn't have admin powers for no apparent reason.

Iowanian 02-06-2006 12:03 PM

And what most of you who find yourself stimulated by them can't seem to comprehend, is that those same jerkatars you can't avoid....are slowing the board down, and making it difficult for some good posters....to post here.

I personally see no reason for the Planet to be confused by some with freakholesdotcom.

God knows the Royals aren't helping it. He doesn't seem to post a whole lot anyway, I'll just quickly scroll past his posts as I have been and use ignore for all others. Non-issue with me at this point.

You're allowed to ignore mods on this board - at least you were when I was running it.

I recently turned off sigs since I'm not required to police them anymore. I don't miss them at all.

It's not that important really. I didn't realize trying to come up with an acceptable solution to the problem made me a dipshit or was going to inconvenience anyone. Apparently bitching and exchanging insults is a much better way to handle a problem.

As amusing as you three are, I'm failing to understand how Phobia is saying you can ignore a mod, and Bugeater is saying you can't.

I cannot find the option ANYWHERE in the admin control panel.

Eureka, I found it.

Bugeater, you can now ignore mods.

This will serve as a warning to you (and anyone else who puts a mod on ignore) however.

If a mod attempts to contact you about an issue and you can't respond because you have them on ignore, it will be treated the same as if you chose not to respond.
