According to NFLPA.org...Priest has taken a pay cut.
So much for Priest being selfish.

Schweet! It seems Priest wants to stay and play. It just don't get any better than that folks.
|
Ahem ;)
|
With his inability to remain healthy and LJ's emergence, that would clearly be the right thing for him to do.
Incentive clauses for carries, yards, etc. would offset the pay cut if something happens to LJ and Priest ends up carrying the load. |
Sweet.

Awesome

This still leaves room for him to retire in June.

I like the paring of these two, if not done in that you get two series and you get one. I'd be hard pressed not to use Priest at the goal line. Of course if we lose TRich I may have to change that stance.

What would be the benefit of it? I don't know why a player would want to go through spring training before retiring. How much do they get paid for off-season work? |
Quote:
But his base doesn't effect the cap if he retires anyway, so it wouldn't matter if it was high or low. It's the signing bonus that hits the cap. |
So with LJ still on his little contract and Priest doing this we now might have the cheapest best RB's ever!!
|
Good for Priest....go out as Chief.
Help the team with that massive cut. Hope nothing happens to him in these remaining years. |
How does this make Priest any less selfish. For him to restructure they most likely gave him money in a SB that he would have never seen if he retired. he made money to save the Chiefs cap space.
I still don't see how this helps the Chiefs, other than lowering his salary by a couple milliong getting them under the cap for the time being. If he plays and there is an uncapped 2007 season. That is perfect. |
Do you see any other Chiefs that have restructured? Supposedly there are 4 that have and another 2 that might.

Holmes Shields are three rumors of who did I would guess Roaf, Surtain and Gonz would be the next asked. but since Bartee has not been cut yet, I fear that he restructured his 1.6 cap hit down to 900K or something stupid to keep him around. |
Quote:
Assuming that this is true, it's possible and probable that he didn't really sacrifice anything. But he did allow the team to rework his contract in order to help them out. I don't think he plans on playing much longer. I'd say this could be his last year, or maybe he'll play two more. Who knows, maybe he still has the desire to play football, and with the lightened load reducing injury risk, is willing to accept a backup/complimentary role. |

He threatens to hold out for more money. Then a year later he talks of retirement. HMMM... Now he restructures which does help the team but it also puts more money in his pocket. How do you lower a salary. You give it to him in a bonus, where you can spread it out over more years. He is seeing money now up front that he would not see if he retires. Yes it helps the team now, but hurts the team later(unless there is an uncapped season), but it helps Priest also. I am not saying he is doing this just to make more money, but to come out and say he isn't selfish becuase he restructured is just wrong. If he took a pay cut for the team. That would be unselfish. |
Quote:
If your boss came to you and asked you to take a pay cut would you? Why should he be any different and want to. We would all be upset and seem a little selfish if we thought we were worth more and couldn't get it. But in the next breath management is asking you to take a pay cut. |
Quote:
As for the rest... He threatened to hold out for more money, because he was making almost nothing, and was playing like the best RB in the game. He deserved more money. Then answered that new contract by setting the record for TDs in a season. Boy, what a jerk. So what if he talked about retirement? He was down because his father was at war. I don't care what he hinted at, because he showed up on the field, and tore the NFL a new asshole. As for the restructure, we don't know what he did. It's entirely possible he did take a pay cut. All anyone knows is that NFLPA is reporting he's getting a lower base than he would have. And regardless of if it was a cut or a restructure, the team wanted him to do it. There's nothing selfish about making a concession to help your team out. It doesn't matter if he isn't giving back a dime, he did what the team asked him to do. No one is claiming he's charitable, but that doesn't mean he's selfish either. Personally, I don't think Holmes has done anything particularly selfish while with this team. There's a lot of people that take guesses at his motives, but in the end, there's never proof behind that speculation. All he's done is play his ass off for the Chiefs, and he gets crucified because he's not a nice guy to the fans. |

Cool, I was already conditioned to not have him here.
I think LJ and Priest is a more desirable combo than LJ and Dee Brwon. |

[QUOTE=jspchief]I know little about Team Priest, so I can't comment. As for the rest...
He threatened to hold out for more money, because he was making almost nothing, and was playing like the best RTB in the game. He deserved more money. Then answered that new contract by setting the record for TDs in a season. Boy, what a jerk. So what if he talked about retirement? He was down because his father was at war. I don't care what he hinted at, because he showed up on the field, and tore the NFL a new asshole. It sounds to me like you have a personal beef with him from that Team Priest thing. QUOTE] Your are a little mixed up. Priest step father didn't leave for war, the year he mentioned retirement. It was his excuse the second year, he mentioned retirement. I know because I had lunch with his mother and step father, before the Oakland Raider game that year. A very cold day, Priest had a hell of a game. His father was just debating on leaving at that time. I loved his parents and I love Priest. Which is why I use the name Holmesfan on the Star forum. I have nothing against him personaly. But he is selfish. But so am I and I would do the same thing, if my body took a beating like his does, and if I had to spend months away from my family. To say he isn't selfish because he is getting more money for restructuring is blowing smoke up his ass. We don't know the details of the restructure, but I am 99% sure he didn't take a pay cut. Know one calls Tony G selfish, because he threatened a hold out for more money. Then again Tony G, didn't talk of retirement the following year after getting a huge pay check. Now one calls Will Shields selfish after he held out years ago. Then again, they actually give back to communities. I don't know anything about him being mean or rude to fans, other than knowing for a fact that he got on the star forum and messed with people just to piss them off. Specially when it dealt with him. IE KCDave. |

WOW!!! I couldn't agree with you more. Rep worthy post... Priest is the first HB we've had in KC worth a crap since OKOYE. The man made KC's offense exciting to watch again. Yet, a handful of people crusify him for asking to be paid in the neighborhood of his production on the field. Then they still have the gaul to call him selfish after taking one for the team and restructuring his contract. Priest IS and always will be one of my favorite Chiefs of all time. |
Quote:
I don't see Priest waiting around one year to get a roster bonus, that he would lose if the Chiefs cut him. he would have to absolutely trust that CP is not screwing him. |

Like I said before, I don't think anyone's claiming that Holmes is making some big concession. But he's not being selfish either. The one thing being ignored in all of this is that the team wanted him to do this. Regardless of how he might benefit, he's scratching the team's back. |

I don't think Priest is selfish. I just have a problem with people that think Priest is HONORABLE or above reproach. Priest is a human being. And not a very humble one at that, despite the charade. I have a much different view of Priest after the 2003 offseason. |
There was a time when Sports Illustrated said Priest Holmes was the most underpaid player in the NFL.
I'm not about to call him selfish for having contract disputes about that, not a chance. He's a helluva football player and a damn fine person in my book. |

But if it was an ad campaign, is that really that big of a deal? It's not like Holmes was asking for money he hadn't earned. The guy 100% deserved a new contract. we can't use hindsight and say he 's too injury prone. He had only missed two games for KC up until that point. Maybe it was more machiavelian than he needed to be, but I don't really have a problem with a guy pursuing what he is due. |
Quote:
But it does not mean he isn't. He is being compensated to help. That is assuming this was even done, specially since his father in law says, he thinks Priest will retire to prevent reinjury. |

I see it as Priest did some work, got the coats instead of pay or free because of who he is. Now some kids who didn't have a coat, now do. Those heartless bastards |
Quote:
"I wanna get paid." Maybe it's unfair...actually, it is unfair. But for some reason, prior to 2003, I thought Priest was somehow different. |
Quote:
Hell yeah I want to get paid and make more money, don't you? Does that make me a selfish bastard? The Chiefs made a ton off of Priest and his years on top, he proved himself as a top back so he should get paid like one. Some of you people would bitch if Priest gave you $5000 because he gave it to you in $100s instead of $20s! |
Quote:
That's when I stopped and reconsidered. The Chiefs had just drafted a RB in the first round. That was their bargaining chip. Priest tried to make his bargaining chip fan support. In the end, he wasn't playing any more dirty than the Chiefs were, and it was all about getting something that he deserved. I don't think he's a good guy. I think he's probably a dick, a lot like Gonzo is. But I don't feel he's been particulary unfair to this organization or it's fans. Whereas tsince the emergence of LJ, some fans have been pretty damn unfair to him. |
Quote:
I said I resent the way Priest acts now primarily because *I* (unfairly) put him on a pedestal prior to 2003. |
depends on whether Holmes actually took a paycut or did some kind of restructure.
IF he took a straight paycut ... then it's outstanding  if he took some kind of restructure then we might be paying him for doing nothing. |
I think he is an awesome player and seems like a good guy, but I don't know him personally. I have no idea what it is like to be a superstar with people worshiping you and hating you. I am sure that can make a person cynical.

He didn't do anything. The second set of numbers you listed are his salary cap numbers, not his salary. NFLPA.org lists ONLY base salaries. What they don't list is LBEI's (Likely to be earned incentive numbers) which is where a majority of his money comes from and what is factored into his cap number. |
Quote:
did i say he wouldn't play if he was on the roster? we were talking about restructures and pay cuts. i said paying him for doing nothing ... like when we paid a player (rich gan non??) 100,000 dollars for restructuring his contract early so we could just cut him later. we basically paid 100k just to delay a cap hit long enough for us to cut him when it was more convenient. or like when we restructure a players contract without them taking a pay cut. we basically give them their yearly salary up front to lessen the salary cap hit. The player gets paid immediately for doing nothing. |
I haven't read this whole thing, but this is just stupid. Who really cares about selfishness here? If he did restructure, then he got paid up front, good for him. That also frees up cap space for the team, good for the team.
What's the frikin problem here? |

It will be interesting to see how people react when LJ says he wants to be paid. Another year like he had last year and he'll have every right to hold out. Priest deserved the money, and at least he didn't hold out like 99% of pro sports athletes that don't play when they want more money. He was a bit harsh about it, but on the other hand he was dealing with Carl Peterson.
|
Quote:
Priest's numbers never changed. And it couldn't to that effect listed without a new agreement being reached on Monday. Converting the remaining money into a bonus spread over 4 years would put the contract in violation of the Deion Sanders 30% rule being that 2006 would be the last uncapped year. |
Quote:
I checked the site last week, and the numbers were much higher. I don't remember them offhand, but they have changed since last week. Players typically don't have a 2.4 million base salary one year, and then a 600,000 the next. Generally, they usually only go up or decrease very slightly. He signed a big contract back in 2003. The sum of that deal wasn't a total base salary of about 8 million. |

I don't think the FO would do something that stupid. If the organization asked for (or agreed to) this, then I have to believe they were smart enough to anticipate him retiring and structured the contract accordingly. The fact that they did this instead of cutting him leads me to believe that it's beneficial to the Chiefs. |
