More bad news for Iowa State....Wayne Morgan has been CANNED!
Just saw it on ESPN. Here's the story.
Without warning, Iowa State fires MorganBy Andy Katz ESPN.com Iowa State abruptly fired Wayne Morgan Thursday night, Morgan told ESPN.com. Morgan was summoned to a meeting with athletic director Jamie Pollard and president Gregory Geoffroy at 10 p.m. Thursday night. Morgan said he was told at the meeting that he was fired, as was his staff. Morgan, 55, had been the coach for three years after replacing Larry Eustachy on May 14, 2003. Iowa State was 16-14 this season, including a 6-10 mark in the Big 12. The Cyclones were 19-12 (9-7 in the Big 12) a year ago, beating Minnesota in the first round and losing to North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In Morgan's first season, the Cyclones went to the NIT postseason final four, going 20-13 (7-9 in the Big 12) after losing to Rutgers in the NIT semifinals. Morgan said his firing this week had nothing to do with a CBS Sportsline report on the Cyclones using a company called D1 scheduling for non-conference games in exchange for recruiting. Earlier this week, Iowa State's backcourt of Curtis Stinson and Will Blalock announced they would both declare for the NBA draft. Morgan said he was told the basketball program should be the marquee of the athletic department but "we don't think you can do that." Morgan said, "The only person who had a better first three years here was Tim Floyd." Morgan was stunned with the news. So, too, was his staff. Andy Katz is a senior writer for ESPN.com. |
Right now Barry Collier looks pretty good to Nebraska fans, eh?
|
Sorry K-State fans, if I were Bob Huggins, I'd go to Iowa State before I went to K-State. Iowa State has been a good program far more recently than K-State.

How is this bad news for ISU?
|
Quote:
Now that's a great response! |
Quote:
I work in an office full of ISU ticket holders and not one is upset about this. |
Here's the question, is McDermott going to ISU or to Iowa at the end of the season?
|
Quote:
i doubt they go for huggins. i have no idea whether huggins would want K-state or not... just saying they i doubt the ISU wants baggage right now. |

I'm not sure Alford is leaving Iowa. I know, I've been wishing he'd leave for 3 years now, but I don't think IU wants him that bad. McDermott should stay where he's at. The mens basketball program at ISU is a train wreck. Why would anyone want the job? |
On the upside, ISU fans don't have to feel so bad about losing to Hampton in the tourney a few years back-they now have company.

That loss to Hampton isn't the one that pisses me off, it's the one to Michigan State with the phantom charge/blocking foul on the same play. |

Rob Jeter appears to be the man.

Must have missed that when I was out of town. I think that's worse news for the Cyclones than Morgan's firing. |

Listen..Rob Jeter is ISU's man. He'll be hired soon.
|
Rob Jeter just announced that he's flattered at how aggressively ISU pursued him, but he's staying at Milwaukee...

ROFL
This is getting good. Rob Jeter announced this morning that he's staying at UW-Milwaukee. Now within the last 10 minutes, ISU has announced a public press conference this evening - fans are invited - to announce a new head basketball coach. |
I'm not sure Jeter was the right choice. He's had 1 year experience as a D1 HC.

Greg McDermott has accepted the Iowa State job.

McDermott hired as men's basketball coach at Iowa State RANDY PETERSON AND TOM WITOSKY REGISTER STAFF WRITERS March 21, 2006 Northern Iowa's Greg McDermott has been hired as men's basketball coach at Iowa State, officials close to the search told the Des Moines Register today. Steve Malchow, Iowa State associate athletic director, confirmed there is a 6 p.m. press conference today at Hilton Coliseum in Ames — but declined to confirm McDermott had accepted the job. Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's basketball coach Rob Jeter told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel newspaper this morning that he plans to remain in Milwaukee. Northern Iowa coach Greg McDermott is the other coach who has interviewed, Iowa State officials said late Monday. "I wasn't looking for a job, and they came after me hard, and quick and aggressive," Jeter told the Milwaukee newspaper. "It was flattering, but I'm staying here in Milwaukee." McDermott, 41, has a 90-63 record and three NCAA Tournament appearances in five seasons at Northern Iowa. The Panthers lost against Georgetown in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday. That sucks.
I knew McDermott wouldn't stay at UNI forever, but I sure as hell didn't want him to end up at ISU. He's got a LOT of work to do. |

I think its good news for the other teams. This league sucked this year. We need to get some talented coaches, get the league back to natioanl prominence. I hope MU gets Huggins, KState gets Mageras, and Nebraska ends up firing Collier |

Where Morgan recruited the coasts and brought in mostly urban (aka black) players, McDermott will lock down the Iowa kids, who are coincidentally mostly white. :D |
