I just found out that my rent will be going up $55 per month when I go to renew in December. So, guess who's in the process of apartment hunting. Sure, I'm about 5 months early, but I like to look around and see if I can find the best value for my money.

The only part of moving I am dreading is the packing. What part of moving don't you like?

When none of your friends show up to help.

All of it. That is why i do it professionally.

Packing up your crap just isn't a good time.

trying to carry a couch by yourself when you moved to a new city and don't know anyone that can help.

With all the crap I've accumulated, I should start packing now. Ugh!

I hate all moving with a passion, but packing is the worst. I loved it when my current company moved me to KC, the moving company didn't allow me to pack anything and they didn't scratch or dent a damn thing and actually called me to see if they could deliver it to me early which worked out perfect as I didn't have to spend a night without a bed.

I hate looking for a new place, what with all the uncertainty and everything. You know you have to find a place in a couple of weeks, but the place you want can't have a room open for 2 days after your lease runs out at your other place; either that or you have to rent two apartments for the month you moving.

Bob Dole had professional movers pack and move his household in 1995. There are still boxes that haven't been unpacked.

Did I mention that I'll be moving around December 1st? That's when my lease is up here. I've already got a place that I'm hoping will have a vacancy at that time.

Unless its an heirloom with sentimental value, think of it this way. If you haven't used it for the last 10 years, you're NEVER going to.

Oh, and volunteers get free beer. Or, if by chance we actually have a cold winter, maybe coffee with Kahlua or hot chocolate with some irish creme or peppermint schnapps.

Have you considered buying a small house rather than renting? Apartments suck baows and all you have after paying for years is a handful of rent receipts.

Yes, I've considered it. I don't think I'll really look at buying a house until I get married. That'll be two incomes plus some to help with repairs, yard work, etc (everything I hate doing...hehehe). If I have nothing to show for renting, well, I have no one to leave anything for, so it's no biggy.

Bob Dole hasn't been in MO for over a decade and doesn't know what your financial situation is, but you might check to see if there are any first-time homeowner programs available to you.

If you can get some grants and an attractive mortgage rate, the sale of that small home you buy now can make for a dandy down payment on the home you want after you get hitched.

With everything I'll have to be paying for...

House payment insurance, property taxes, all utilities, cable, internet, trash service, buying a lawn mower, buying tools, paying to have things fixed, renovation costs (decorating, paint, etc)...

There's no way I'm gonna be able to afford anything worth having. I still have a year to pay on my car. A docto'rs bill I'm paying off, a loan I'm paying off.....

I just don't think I could do all that on one income of (currently) 12.95/hour.

I like renting, cause I don't have to worry about crap when something breaks, I don't have to mow my lawn, my renter's insurance is 9 bucks a month, it's all good!

I have heard the costs of buying only come out ahead if you're going to be in the place for over 5 years. Less than that and its actually still beneficial to rent what with the interest and other costs.

This guy gets my point. Not only am I paying for a place to live, but I'm paying for convenience when renting.

Although, this time I'm gonna try to get an end apartment. That way, I don't have my bedroom adjoining anyone else's.

Not everyone loves to move? Growing up as an "army brat" nutured my gypsy ways. My family called three continents home before I was 10. I guess the the wanderlust never ends. I love it all. Even the packing and unpacking.

Here's a news flash. You're paying all of that anyway + a profit for the apartment owner.

Exactly right. Even if she buys a mobile home, she is building some equity that she can use later. That's how I got my first house.

Its all the same. Like I said, with interest rates, processing fees, and all that other stuff, a home doesn't earn equity until about 5 years in. If you know you're gonna be in the same place for that long, you should buy, but anything else and you should rent.

Not to mention the uncertainty of buying a house. I mean, there are laws saying an apartment has to be suitable to live, but you can get termites and all sorts of stuff with a house, and without anywhere to turn.

I didn't say that, I just said it's 6 in one hand and a half-dozen in another. And I think when you're renting an apartment, the bank fees are passed on to you, but also to the other 40 tennants in the complex, not to mention most of the time owners of a complex have 10 or more around town.

Which would you prefer, paying 600 a month, or paying 800 a month and getting 200 of it back whenever you move out of a house? I'm telling you, unless you're planning to stay for 5 years or more, its not worth it.

How old are you. 21? I could rip you good but I'll settle for this: have you ever heard of building equity? Who gets the benefit of owning where you live as inflation makes it more valuable? Do you think these apartment owners are stupid? They would be if you listened to you. You don't really have much of a grasp on the real world now do you?

I understand equity... I also understand that on an average 30-year note, 60-some percent of your average payment is paid to interest. Given that, with all the sales taxes, real estate fees and application fees at a bank, you don't start into the equity building to a point that's worth your while until about 5 years in.

If you don't believe me, buy a house, pay the taxes, loan processing fees, real estate agency fees (if you go that route, like most do). Then sell it in a year accounting for inflation, and tell me where you stand.

You can easily spend 10,000 on the fees associated with buying a new home. How much did they buy the house for in the first place? 80,000? 250,000?

OK, without reading.........GAS GAS GAS, not to mention inflation. I say stay put~My rent at work went up this year. However, our prices didn't!

Did you hear me? AFTER five years, and it starts being cheaper...before that and you're better off renting.

Last I checked, apartment complexes stay around for longer than 5 years, and also have more than one piece of property to make their bank with. They sure don't make money off a new complex for those first few years, its in the LONG RUN they start making money off of the renters. Truthfully, a landlord is lucky if he breaks even for his first 5 years. About the only way a person will even break even for the first five years is if it was something they fixed up. And that only works if the person who bought it is who fixed it up, and only then because of free labor.

That's why buying a house is an INVESTMENT. If it was as easy as you say, it would just be the way.

Remember when I was trying to decide between this place and one other? The other didn't provide internet access (which is why I chose this one). Now it does, but their prices haven't gone up.....yet. And that place is even closer to work than where I'm at now. They're across form the library behind that Belgian Waffle House.

He was right across from me then. I'm in the new apartments right there.

Last time I moved all of my stuff is when I was out of town in Memphis a lot for work. I packed everything I didn't want mom to see (she's a little naive when it comes to me), then gave her the key to my place. She packed everything else. I know she won't mind helping again. :)

I like moving in the respect that it's kinda like starting over. Fresh new place. I look forward to it in that regard.

It really sucks when you get the letter or call that the place you just moved out of is going to sue your ass because you threw too many parties and trashed the place.

I haven't read all of this, so maybe it was already answered...

Your rent is increasing by $55 a month - $660 annually. How much is it going to cost you to move? Considering the payment for having things hooked up (phones, etc) at your new apartment and the move itself?

The old man is right. I bought a maintanence free condo when I was 21. Beats the hell out of renting. I don't mow the lawn, I don't take care of anything on the exterior of the unit. I've had 2 minor repairs i've had to do since i've lived there, which totaled under $500.

I pay a HOA (home owners association) fee that covers insurance, water, trash, snow removal, extended basic cable, lawn service, pool service, etc.

Apartments in a similar location that are comprable in size cost MORE than my House payment+HOA fee, and I have equity to show for it.

All of it.

Even worse is when you go to help a friend move...only to find out that they haven't even packed yet.
If you are helping them move, the least they could do is have their s**t packed when you get there...jeeeesh.

Just throw everything away and buy all new stuff

The worst part is asking other people for help. I despise that. If I could do it by myself, I would.

The best part is picking out the new place. It's your chance to recreate from scratch a big aspect of your life.

BTW, the ONLY good part about the actual moving is when it's over.

We are presently having fits trying to find a place (we are looking to buy our first house). Oddly, a year ago there were houses for sale on every street in town. Now, you can get numerous 1200 square feet houses or $150,000 and up houses, nothing inbetween though.

Add in we put a fair offer on an overpriced house last week only to have the realtor give the owner a second offer before they said yes or no to ours, then gave us 20 min to accept a large counter offer. The looking really sux right now. We may actually wait a year and build the way things are looking.
