He is?? you cant compare closers these days to guys back in the 70's and early 80's. Most closers these days pitch no more than 1 inning at a time. Saves are cheap these days.

I will deny that he is the greatest. Lee Smith was pretty bad ass too. I do like the fact that he has one pitch

his saves come in high pressure situations, he pitches in new york, you know new yorkers will tear into you if ya fugg up, his cutter sure isnt what it once was but he still throws 94-95

yeah he plays in new york which means he always has the best talent around him and he is consistantly put in winable situations. Thats why not only not the best player, i would venture to say he is below a human being.

He doesn't have a whole lot of tricks up his sleave, just zings it in there with a whole lot of pepper and says "try to hit it".

He's been consistant for many years (in baseball terms) now too.

You can take any of those guys if you want to, but I'll pick Rivera over them to close out my games.

as i was saying before, mariano rivera is the greatest closer of all time, and as i was going to espn.com i check their usually poll, and the poll was who is the greatest closer of all time, with no suprise, rivera is ahead by a large margain, rivera 54%, eck 30%, lee smith 7%, hoffman and sutter at 5%

Without getting into the old school argument of relief pitchers and starters trowing more innings, since I have been watching baseball Rivera is easily the best I have seen.

There have been short periods where closers were better but they didnt last more than a year or two the level Rivera has been for his career. Rivera is easily the best and has been even better in the playoffs.

I can't stand the Yankees but when I think of a unhitable pitch, Rivera's 95 mph cutter is the first that comes to mind.

You mean hit with authority. It is very hittable, you just end up with a broken bat. When i think of unhittable i think randy johnsons 90 mph slider in his hayday
